Can you imagine a robot delivering your pizza right on your door step? Well, Domino’s Pizza is happy to offer this service to you. Domino’s Pizza is the second largest American pizza restaurant franchise chain that is located in Michigan. It was founded in 1960 and currently has branches in 82 countries. Before it was renamed to Domino’s Pizza, owners Tom and James Monaghan bought this small pizza store that was called DomiNick’s but as they expanded the business, the original owner barred the brothers to use the name DomiNick, so one day an employee suggested a new name “Domino’s” and from there it was officially renamed in the year 1965 as Domino’s Pizza.
Just recently, Domino’s announced that they teamed up with Starship Technologies, a company that is based in London. This company has developed self-driving robot delivery vehicles that are equipped with a sensor suite that have a camera, GPS and IMU. The rovers have built-in microphones and speakers so that they can communicate to any human they meet. They drive only at the sidewalks and have a maximum speed of 6 kilometers per hour. Don Meji, the CEO of Dominos said that even though they already have existing delivery methods like cars, scooters and ebikes, robotic delivery units can complement their existing service. They wanted to guarantee their customers that they can give the best service there is available to ensure that when they receive their order, they’re still hot and fresh.
The CEO also stated that five to ten years from now, they would not have enough delivery, so it would be better to add this kind of technology as early as now so that people can already adjust to it. Starship Technologies’ goal which is “changing how packages, groceries and food are delivered” is really coming to reality. Though this is not the first time Domino’s tried this kind of delivery service because way back in 2015 they already launched their scooter delivery program which was called “Domi-No-Drivers”. It is said that these robots drive autonomously but of course, they are also monitored by humans and can take control if there is a need for it. The robots can carry 8 pizzas at the same time but because of its speed, the robots can deliver your order within 30 minutes or an hour in a 2 mile radius.

Beforehand, the company already tested pizza deliveries by using drones in Australia and New Zealand so you better wait for its launching this summer in Hamburg, Germany and Netherlands after that. I sure hope this idea goes well because I want to try ordering from a robot-based food delivery service! Before, when delivering pizza they use small vans, motorcycle or even a bicycle then due to the progress brought by technology, things are changing. Delivery boys used scooters and electric bikes in the past, but recently news revealed that some are already using drones! Things are really getting exciting when it comes to delivery services lately!
