The Google Pixel 2 is one of those rare mobile devices set to be released in 2017 that can give iPhones and Samsungs an even more run for their money, with the first Pixel phone having done so tremendously. The Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL are even more expected to further raise the bar in both performance and quality of mobile devices. While many details are scarce, there’s enough leaks going around to tease about these new phones that are already teases on their own. For starters, the new generation Pixel 2’s have been given code names: Walleye and Muskie, after two popular freshwater fish. The leaked code names from the tech giant seem to be genuine since Google’s devices have always followed aquatic creature-themed codes in the past. For instance, the old Google Nexus 10 was code-named Manta Ray.
We have no real idea as to which device Walleye or Muskie has been designated, but perhaps we can find clues based on the smartphone’s measurements. Google Pixel 2 is the obvious successor to the original Pixel while the Pixel XL is the likely larger sibling. Considering that Muskie is a bigger-sized fish that Walleye, so it’s easier to draw conclusions based on this. But what’s intriguing is the emergence of a third code name for a yet unidentified device, teasing or hinting at the possibility of a third Google Pixel-branded phone perhaps by 2018. The third Pixel phone seems to be a large possibility to be the successor to the Pixel XL with possibly either measuring bigger or having a larger display screen. The code name given to this third device is Taimen, belonging to the salmon and trout family.
What is intriguing is that as an aquatic animal, Taimens are enormous, largely dwarfing even the biggest Muskies and Walleyes. This new code name seems to be pointing to third Pixel device that could become the tech giant’s ultimate flagship smartphone that will exceed the Pixel 2 XL in size. Though speculation is now running rampant over rumors and leaks about this third device, based on the present XL device, the third Pixel could easily run measurements between the 5.9-inch and 6.5-inch range.

The Google Pixel 2 is expected to have a 5-inch display, with its larger XL sibling to feature a 5.5-inch screen. While 5.5-inch displays have become the common norm for large smartphones for several years now, the emergence of larger devices such as the Galaxy S8 and the upcoming iPhone 8 Edition suggests that the new generation of smartphones coming in 2017 and 2018 may have screens bigger than 5.5. Taimen may be one of the first towards this new generation. Google has already given significant proof that it can emerge with the best of them, and even better. Even before the emergence of the Pixel, the Nexus series showed some new features like more raw power and front-facing stereo speakers.
