Social media has been a mainstream thing in this generation. This is the height for social awareness as people responded quite positively to the growing trend. Many networking sites have emerged over the years and third-party applications have been a bridge in connecting one to another. Messaging apps have now taken over the traditional text messages as it offers free service over wi-fi and people nowadays seem to die without an internet connection. Instant messaging is a real-time, text-based communication similar to chat. IM uses a shared software client between or among two or more people using personal computers, iPhones or other devices. The communication is done over a network, often the Internet, and may include advanced modes with live voice or video. File transfers are also sometimes allowed but are limited in size.
Although this falls under the chat category, what marks it apart is the ability to choose a recipient from a known list. One popular messaging application is Viber. Viber is one of the biggest companies in the messaging realm as its count reached 800 million. With this, you can chat, make or take calls, video chat, share photos and videos, play games online and just about anything under the sun. Just recently, the company announced a new feature: secret chats. This is their response to the growing number of requests which concerns the security of their privacy during conversations. This basically gives users the option of starting conversations that self-destruct after a certain time limit.
The secret chat feature offers more than hiding away the conversation. When activated, Secret Chats prevent messages from being forwarded, on the iOs platform it alerts the user if someone screenshots the thread, and blocks the screenshot from registering to the other device on android. As all the other messages on Viber are encrypted, security can never be compromised. It even gives the option of hiding the chat under a PIN code. The security feature on all messaging apps is being on top priority and Viber has done just that. Update for the app has already been rolling so this added feature might come up next week.

Although this is subjectively an advantage to the user, it does affect others to a certain degree. It somehow promotes infidelity for those with partners with the fact that it erases possible tangible evidences. This also holds a vulnerable spot as it can accidentally erase important information. It erases messages without notifying so it will be best to consider which conversations should be held “secretly”.
A lot more can happen in the near future. Reviews can come anytime soon when users will be able to experience the new feature firsthand. All else, changes will come. As they say, the only thing constant in this world is change. Let’s see if this will make or break the app. Viber has been stable with its platform. The development they push through has surely been well thought of. As this trend has started, Facebook messenger first released it. Looking forward to more great messaging apps in the future.
