Do you remember the Pebble E-Paper Smartwatch that was posted on Kickstarter last month? Remember how it broke a million dollars in funding in just one day and how it has since gone on to raise close to $8 million? Well, it’s gaining even more traction in the form of its first app.

Yes, the Pebble e-watch is also an app platform and its first app partner comes by way of RunKeeper, which is developing an app specific to the upcoming smartwatch. In fact, this won’t even be a download that you’ll need to do on your own; the RunKeeper app will be pre-installed and integrated with the Pebble right out of the box when it launches this September.

As with the RunKeeper app that you may already have on your smartphone, the e-watch version will let you start your RunKeeper runs, monitor your progress, stop your activity, and so on. As with almost everything else on the Pebble, the app will require a Bluetooth connection to your smartphone to work.

The Keypad Hidden Time Watch sets itself apart from other watches by its unique way of showing time. And it’s also a “conversation starter” and that’s true as people who see this on your wrist will definitely ask, “What the hell is that?”

To check the time, you just have to press any of the number keys and the time will light up, a digit at a time. It’s certainly unique, but we believe many will get tired of it. As you might agree with us, people sometimes look at their watches when they are late and frustrated, and the last thing they want to do is to follow the lighted keys to know the time. But it may help to improve your patience.

The 10-key Number Pad Watch is available in classic keyboard ivory and black colors, and it comes with a price tag of $99.99.

Product Specifications

There are units that can help you track your biking and running habits, for instance, and in the case of the newly announced ForeRunner 910XT multisport watch, it can track your swimming too.

This higher end GPS watch is waterproof up to 50 meters, letting you keep your tracking going even when you’re going for a dip in the pool or the lake. There are sensors that can provide detailed swim metrics, like distance, speed, pace, elevation, heart rate, strokes, pool lengths, and even your “swolf score,” which describes your swimming efficiency.

The watch can be used for other sports too, like biking, hiking, and running, but it’s clear that the waterproof-ness is lending itself to the more aquatic end of the equation. You can expect 20 hours of battery life, vibe alerts, and a “Virtual Racer” feature that lets you race against yourself. The Garmin ForeRunner 910XT is shipping now for $400.

Timex? Tissot? Esquire? Sure, these are perfectly fine brands for wristwatches, but none of them are particularly geeky. For that, you may want to turn to the people at Click who recently announced a couple of new watches bearing a circuit board-inspired design.

The two watches are more or less the same, except one has a series of dip switches and other has a single turn switch, hence their respective names. Beneath that is a circuit board-inspired design, along with what looks like computer cabling/ribbon for the wristband. Even the packaging comes in a circuit board-based design.

The display can be set to show the time in a regular digital fashion, but there are alternative modes too, like the one where hours, 10x minutes, and 1x minutes are displayed in three different rows. I never got the appeal of making the process to tell time more difficult than it needs to be, but I guess that’s part of the whole geek chic thing. They retail for $150 to $170 each.

Phosphor’s new “Appear” watch takes LCD to a new level: Not Liquid Crystal Display, but Literally, Crystal Display. The face of the watch is blanketed by a downright kitschy amount of Swarovski crystals, some of which actually, physically flip to reveal a black, pink or red side in order to tell time.

It’s a neat concept, but the loud ticking the crystals make when they flip would probably get pretty annoying quickly. If you switch the display off to stop the noise, you can’t check the time while your other hand is busy, as you need to hit the on button again.

But even if you don’t hit the on button again, the Appear’s display will reset itself at midnight. Every single night. If you’re a light sleeper, you might want to leave the watch next to the sink in the washroom at night so the thing doesn’t wake you up when it starts ticking again in the middle of the night.

The watch is already available in a variety of colours for both men and women, each running between $200 and $250 on Phosphor’s site.

[ Giz via Phosphor Watches]

What ever happend to watches that tell the time in a simple and easy to read manner? Why must designers be hell bent on creating a watch that actually takes you more time to, well, read the time for no real reason other than upping your hipster chic rating?

All of these questions could have easily been posed to designer Olivier Demangel at some point, but I guess he didn’t really care. And so, somehow we find ourselves looking at the Konect Watch. It’s a watch that happens to have a built-in USB drive, Bluetooth connectivity, and media controls.

Oh, and tell the time, you might need to spend a few more moments than you normally would looking at a typical analog clock face (or regular digital clock). First, you have to spot the blue light to indicate the hour. Then, you have to look at the purple light to determine the “five minutes group” and then the quadrant blue lights for the single minutes. It’s no red ring of death, but the single minute part sure looks like the Xbox light system.

And let’s not forget about the background music that sounds pretty much the same as the theme song to House. That’s a good show. This watch, on the other hand, sounds overly complex for no particularly useful reason. If you really want Demangel to go ahead with this, you’ll need to lobby Tokyo Flash to put it into production. Otherwise, you can join the rest of us and just read the time on your smartphone screen.

URWERK’s new UR-110 watch is a solar system behind a sapphire crystal viewing glass, using orbiting “hour satellites” running along a minute track and a steampunk tenor to tell time.

Its asymmetrical titanium casing houses the three satellites on a carousel, each with a four-sided hour indicator which itself rotates as it orbits the timepiece’s centre. Beneath this carousel are two other dials: A day/night indicator and an oil change gauge. Yes, oil change.

The watch’s self-winding system is regulated by dual turbines visible from the back of the watch.

“The beauty of the UR-110 is in its apparent simplicity. The development of UR-110 mobilized our entire team for nearly two years,” says Felix Baumgartner of URWERK. “Among the challenges posed by this complication was working out the optimal architecture for supporting the central carousel and the rotating hour modules. We finally opted for a technical solution that is radically different from any of our other creations: instead of ball bearings, a fixed axis runs the full height of the watch, providing maximum rigidity and minimum play. The whole complication is perfectly balanced on this axis.”

The watch is water resistant up to 3 ATM, or roughly 100 feet.

To get your hands on the watch, you’ll have to find one of the handful of URWERK’s authorized retailers, none of which are posting a price. In the meantime, you can watch the video and pretend you own one.

Okay. Heroes kind of lost its way after the first season, so it’s not all that surprising that it eventually got canned by NBC. You won’t be able to catch any more of those everyday superheroes on TV again (unless you count No Ordinary Family, which really isn’t the same thing), but you can relive your yatta moments with the La Cle du Temps watch from Hublot.

Go ahead and unleash your inner Hiro Nakamura, because this crazy-looking watch will give you the ability to speed up or slow down time to your heart’s delight. La Cle du Temps, after all, translates to “the key of time” in French. By use of a special selector, you can get time to run fast or run slow; yes, you can control time…. sort of.

The real world will continue to operate as it always has, but you can think that you’ve slowed things down to bullet time, cleverly evading bad guys and putting things back in their place. When you’re done with your make believe, the watch can make use of its memory to bring the clockface back to the correct time. Go back to “normal” mode and you’re among the masses again.

Is this useful? Not at all, but I think I’d rather have this than one of those silly iPod nano watches.

“Time flows like a river. Time is endless. It continues from the past to present and later on to the future.”

What a profound statement that really puts time, life and our experiences into perspective. As much as some of us wish that we could just have a few seconds to catch our breath, time does not stop for anything, it continues toward an endless purpose and expects everyone to try to keep up. It is up to us to find value in the moments that we are granted.

This is essentially the philosophy behind the Memory Time Watch by Wonjune Song; it challenges the limits that we have put on time by associating it with 12 numbers. The eye-catching piece “expresses the essence of time” by having a dark face dial, that represents the value of time gone by, gradually working to cover the inner mechanics of the watch as the day goes on. It looks something like a steampunk Casio G-Shock, with its exposed inner gears, which is definitely a unique look and will attract some attention and curiousity. I don’t think we are in for a significant change in our method of measuring time, so as for the majority of consumers who don’t want to be late for every other scheduled appointment, stick to simple digits.
