It’s really amazing the kinds of things that you find when you start digging through the boxes you have stashed away in the attic or the garage. I remember unearthing some old LEGOs and Transformers toys the last time I did that. Some people might rediscover some old NES cartridges they had.

Thirty years ago, the E.T. game was released on the Atari 2600 and, well, it was bad. Really bad. So bad, in fact, that urban legend has it that “millions of copies” were packed onto nine trucks, burying all of these old game cartridges in some landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico. No game, regardless of how bad it may be, deserves that kind of fate.

And so, on the 30th anniversary of this classic Atari game based on a beloved Hollywood movie, film company Fuel is going to dig up the landfill to look for the buried games, filming the whole process for a documentary. The Atari port of Pac-Man is said to be buried too and Fuel might find it. Who would have ever thought that dumpster diving could be fodder for a movie? I guess our little friend is finally phoning home?

At first, I thought this special bundle deal was a bit odd, but when you stop to think about it, it really makes a lot of sense. You’ve got Call of Duty: Black Ops II on your choice of either the Xbox 360 or the PS3, as well as Halo 4 for the Xbox 360. Black Ops is on sale for $49.99 ($10 off), while Halo is $39.99 ($20 off). The Linksys router is $199, which is $20 off its regular list price too.

For a lot of people, the Metal Gear Solid franchise just isn’t the same without Solid Snake as the protagonist, but this Raiden guy… he’s pretty epic. And he’s got some seriously epic boss battles ahead of him in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

While developers Platinum Games are taking care of the crazy action in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, fans of the franchise can rest assured that Kojima Productions is still handling the plot and the design for the Raiden character. But you don’t have to worry about the action coming up short, because an early preview of the boss battles looks to be pretty awesome.

Yes, the early Ray boss is pretty standard, aside from running down an exploding tower and “slaughtering the [skyscraper-sized] robot with nothing more than a sword,” but the Mistral mid-game boss is another beast altogether. She has multiple arms that attach to Dwarf Gekos for some crazy swarm attack action. There’s a wide open arena and plenty of challenge and intrigue, which leads to a smaller industrial environment where you gain the (no pun intended) edge.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance isn’t scheduled for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 until February 2013, but you can pre-order it now to guarantee your copy on launch day.

We’ve seen plenty of Bluetooth controllers for mobile devices, but none are quite as tiny as the iMpulse. Don’t let that small size fool you, because this miniscule controller looks like it could be really big on fun.

Yes, it’s small enough to fit on your keychain and the iMpulse Bluetooth game controller is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. You get an analog thumbstick on the one side and four face buttons on the other side, making it suitable for a wide range of games. You can even flip it the other way for lefties, making this an ambidextrous controller.

Gaming on the go is just better with physical controls, but the developers wanted it to do more. For starters, it also works as a key locator. Using the corresponding app on your mobile device, you can get the iMpulse (which is naturally attached to your keychain) to beep. It can also function as a remote shutter for the camera app and a remote control for your mobile media player app too. That’s pretty useful if you ask me.

Head on over to the Kickstarter page and make a pledge. They’re almost at their $49,999 goal with just a little over a month to go. Pledge a minimum of $30 to get your hands on the tiny controller when it ships next February. They had some limited edition metal plated versions too, but those sold out.

Arcade culture was booming in the 1990s and a big part of that had to do with the multi-game NEO GEO cabinets. Then, they decided to create a home version of the system, offering a nearly true arcade experience in console form. Unfortunately, the system cost about $650 and individual games were $200+. Compared to how much people were spending on the SNES and Genesis, the NEOGEO AES was just too expensive.

Yes, you can play select SNK and NEO GEO titles through the Wii’s Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade, but this is the real deal. Here is the NEOGEO X GOLD, a complete solution for both mobile and home-based gaming. Some people will say that this is “shockingly expensive at $200,” but you have to remember what you’re getting as part of this package. There is the NEOGEO X Handheld, which is almost like a squared off PSP with a 4.3-inch display, but you also get the NEOGEO X Station to connect to a TV via HDMI or A/V out, as well as the NEOGEO X Joystick.

If you consider that a quality arcade stick for the PS3 or Xbox 360 can easily run you $200 on its own, this is a pretty decent value. Of course, the joystick only works with the NEOGEO X, but the kicker is that it comes pre-installed with 20 classic NEOGEO titles. I’m particularly happy to see King of the Monsters and World Heroes Perfect, as well as Baseball Stars II, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters ’95, Magician Lord, and Samurai Shodown II, among others. This is my childhood! Aside from Street Fighter, I grew up playing as a Godzilla-like beast in King of Monsters and following the adventures of Terry Bogard and crew in the KoF series.

There’s no specific mention of what else could be coming down the pipeline, but they do say that there is an expandable game slot in there too. Hopefully a few more Metal Slugs make their way over. In any case, you can celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original NeoGeo by buying the NeoGeo X Gold starting on December 6 for $199.99. That sure beats spending $650 on the original AES and then thousands on the original titles, but that’s just for the collecting purists out there.

Yes, we already know about the iCade and Ouya, but what about the nostalgic value of curling up with your favorite NES title from the 80s? The newest creation is called the GameDock and it effectively lets you convert your iPhone, iPad or iPad touch into a retro video game console, complete with two player support and HDTV output.

The dock itself looks relatively simple with a place to dock your device. In the front, there are two USB ports that can easily accept modified NES-style controllers for two players. And then around the back is the HDMI output to connect to your HDTV. The developers took advantage of the pre-existing Bluetooth input standard from the Ion Audio iCade, since it already provides support for over 100 iOS games.

You can check out the Kickstarter page for more information and to pledge your cash. The $100 early bird is sold out, but if you pledge at least $125, they’ll send you a ready-to-play GameDock complete with the two retro USB controllers and an HDMI adapter. Bump that up to $150 and you’ll get “a bundle of games” too. They’ve set a funding goal of $50,000 and with 27 days to go, they’re already up over $40,000 in pledges.

You know that $100 Ouya Android gaming console that we showed you a couple days ago? It looks like it’s going to be pretty darn popular. In fact, the Ouya video game system is now the fastest ever Kickstarter project to raise $1 million, achieving this feat in a mere 8 hours and 22 minutes. But the funding didin’t stop there.

As of this writing, the Ouya Kickstarter project has raised over $4.5 million and it still has 26 days to go. Needless to say, people are pretty darn interested in this cheap system that is promising free video games for all. While it’s unclear exactly what games will launch with Ouya, the Kickstarter page does at least depict Canabalt, a fun and simple game that I’ve been playing through the Chrome Web Store. The tentative dashboard, which is vaguely reminscent of the Xbox 360 Dashboard, also shows Samurai Vengeance, Dead Trigger, Shadowgun, Racing Live, TripleTown and Minecraft.

Because Ouya is based on Android, app developers aren’t restricted to just playing games. They could theoretically develop whatever Android application they want. Again, on the Kickstarter page, they’re showing that Ouya could have a Twitch.tv app for live streaming of gaming tournaments and events. The Ouya prototype is already up and running, but they need money for the next stage of development.

Whereas it took the Ouya just a little over 8 hours to raise $1 million, the next closest Kickstarter project (Double Fine Adventure) took 17 hours and 30 minutes. Remember that Pebble e-watch that had everyone raving? That took 27 hours to raise $1 million. Yeah, this Ouya thing could be a pretty big deal.

When a typical new video game console hits the market, you can usually expect to spend several hundred dollars to buy it. You might even remember the frenzy surrounding the PS3 launch with systems going for up to $2,000 on eBay. The Ouya is not that kind of video game console. It’s only $100.

The unassuming silver box will be powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. There is 1GB of RAM to go along with 8GB of flash storage, HDMI, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a wireless controller that looks similar to that of the OnLive console or the Xbox 360 controller. Those specs make it sound like a pretty decent smartphone or tablet, but this is meant to be a home gaming console.

Perhaps the even bigger kicker is that there is an open SDK where they promise to provide digitally-delivered titles for free. I imagine the marketplace will start with a handful of freeware titles and free-to-try games, but it has to open up to paid games eventually. In any case, the Ouya is only $100 and it’ll be interesting to see how it fares in an environment where we’ve grown accustomed to Android games on the go. Does this spell eventual doom for the Wii U, PS4, and Xbox 720?

When Nintendo officially revealed Wii U to the world and showed that we’d each have a touchscreen tablet controller in our hands, we had our apprehensions. We thought cost could be an issue and we also thought battery life could be a problem. And now, Nintendo has confirmed our hesitations about the latter.

Simply dubbed the Wii U “GamePad,” this tablet-esque controller will have dual thumb sticks, along with standard d-pad, L/R shoulder buttons, ZL/ZR shoulder buttons, A/B/X/Y face buttons, start, select, TV control, power, home, and a 6.2-inch 16:9 LCD touchscreen. There’s also motion control (accelerometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic sensor), a front-facing camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, rumble, a sensor bar, a stylus, and NFC support.

While we haven’t heard anything concrete about price yet, we have learned that having all that tech in a controller is going to cost you in battery life. You can expect to only get three to five hours per charge. Given many people’s propensity towards marathon gaming sessions, this could prove to be a huge problem. Can you imagine being in the middle of an awesome session of Zelda or Mario Kart, only to have your controller die on you? Not good. And it takes about 2.5 hours to fully charge it.

As far as other major highlights about the Wii U, it’ll use an IBM Power-based multi-core processor, AMD Radeon-based high-definition GPU, internal flash memory, SD card slots, USB storage, Wii U and Wii optical discs, 802.11/b/g/n Wi-Fi, four USB 2.0 ports, legacy support for Wii controllers and accessories, up to 1080p video (including HDMI), video chat, Internet browser, and video entertainment (Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, etc.). There’s also something called Miiverse, which is like a Mii social network to post messages and challenge friends to games.

What do you think? Are you buying a Nintendo Wii U when it launches this holiday shopping season?

Yes, I know. We always have to take rumors and leaks with a grain of salt, but we can’t help but to jump all over what we just learned about the upcoming Nintendo Wii U console. This information comes by way of a supposed Ubisoft Milan developer who, for some reason or another, decided to spill the beans on an online forum.

The launch price will be reportedly between $350 and $450 with the release planned for November 23. Technical details include DirectX11 support, Unreal Engine 4, 2GB of RAM (560MB for OS), Radeon HD 6770 graphics, and some pre-installed software. I imagine that last bit will be similar to some of the “channels” that we have on the current Nintendo Wii.

There are still “multiple versions” of the console with various developers, so the design has not yet been finalized. The touchscreen controller is definitely in there, but the trigger buttons won’t be analog. There’s also word of some inclusion of the Wii Vitality Sensor. The UI on the Wii U will be customizable in some way and, catching up with Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo will be offering some sort of achievements system.

Ubisoft’s planned games include Rayman Legends, The Avengers, Assassin’s Creed 3 (running at 60fps at 1080p), Just Dance 4, and Killer Freaks from Outer Space. EA, Valve and Crytek are all working on Wii U titles. Valve specifically is working on Portal ports and a digital distribution platform.

Chalk this up to rumor for now, but Nintendo should be making some formal announcements at E3 next month.
