For the first time ever you could get the Apple iPhone on a carrier other than AT&T. 7 a.m. was the time people began lining up, which didn’t get too out of hand, just 8 people at the flagship New York City store near Central Park according to CNN.

Today marks a day in Apple’s history. The Big Red carrier, Verizon Wireless, has after talks dating back to 2008, landed the worlds most popular smartphone on their network, the iPhone 4. A version that is described as being identical to AT&T’s, besides the CDMA sans-4G connection, will go up for sale on February 10th starting at $200.

On the TV show “Street Smart”, Rodman & Renshaw senior technology analyst Ashok Kumar explains how the AT&T hold on Apple’s smartphone will be ending this year, giving way for Verizon Wireless to offer the iPhone in the U.S. this January 2011.

AT&T addressing iPhone connectivity issues: Not so fast Verizon Wireless

Ever since the original Apple iPhone launched way back in 2007, thousands of customers have complained about how poor the network performance was with the iPhone. AT&T’s exclusivity over Americans gave them little choice but to put up with it or get another phone.

Could the shackles be broken? If the rumors of a CDMA-equipped iPhone destined for Verizon Wireless, why would Apple and AT&T be continuing the a relationship by working closely with Apple to rectify the network issues.
