Verizon’s iPhone 4 pre-order sales a success

On Thursday, Verizon announced that the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 achieved a record first day sales, describing it as the carrier’s most successful first day sales in history. Although we are unsure of the exact official numbers of the pre-ordered handsets, CEO Dan Mean had this to say “in just out first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history.”

Despite a few complaints from some would-be customers about the stability of Verizon’s website, Mead claimed that “unprecedented customer orders” were placed online through them. I guess there were just a few slow customers who were not able to get up early enough to snag a guaranteed pre-order. The sales began on Thursday morning at 3:00AM for customers already loyal to Verizon, and just 2 hours later at 5:00AM numbers had already exceed any of Verizon’s previous first-day records.

Pre-orders are now, for obvious logistical reasons, closed, and the next round is not to be expected until February 9, a day before the general market launch of the iPhone 4 on the Verizon network. On February 10 everyone else will be able to get their hands on Verizon’s take on the Apple smartphone, with the company opening its over 2000 Verizon Wireless Communications stores at 7 am, as well the iPhone will also be available at Apple store locations, Best Buy, select Wal-mart locations and online through www.verizonwireless.com and www.apple.com.

Galaxy Tab gets a 4G upgrade for Verizon

If you’ve just received one of Samsung’s well-priced Galaxy Tabs this Christmas, you’ll be pissed to hear that they’ve made the upgrade to 4G, as well as bumping up the resolution of the rear-facing camera to 5 megapixels and the front camera to 1.3.

The new Galaxy Tab 4G will run on Verizon’s new 4G network, offering lightning fast speeds as you browse around on its 7 inches of enhanced TFT in 1024 x 600 WSVGA resolution. They’ve even upgraded the processor to 1.2GHz in the Cortex A8 Hummingbird. They’ll be sticking with Android 2.2. and haven’t specified a release date or price. But this is definitely enough information soon enough after the Christmas season to cause some commotion amongst those who were, until reading this, happy with their gtab. Now if this one gets Honeycomb over the 3G, then you’ll be really pissed.

The 4G LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab features a 7-inch enhanced TFT display with 1024 x 600 WSVGA resolution, full support of Android™ 2.2 with access to Adobe® Flash® 10.1, 1.2GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird application processor and access to more than 100,000 applications available on Android Market™.

Designed with a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera, the 4G LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab is also outfitted with a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera and camcorder, enabling video chat capabilities. The 4G LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab includes access to Samsung’s Social Hub service, built around messaging, contacts and calendar sync, it allows users to send and receive information, whether it is e-mail, social network updates or text messages. It also features Samsung’s Media Hub content service available on the 4G LTE network, which offers a robust collection of premium movies and TV episodes for purchase or rental from some of the biggest entertainment companies in the United States. Additionally, the 4G LTE-enabled Galaxy Tab will come preloaded with popular LTE-specific applications.

Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network currently reaches one-third of all Americans, with plans to expand the network to the company’s entire 3G coverage area over the next three years.

Motorola debuts Droid Bionic for Verizon and Cliq 2 for T-Mobile

Hot on the heels of the announcement of Motorola’s PC-Smartphone hybrid Atrix 4G for AT&T yesterday, the manufacturer has two other smartphones on show at CES, but this time for Verizon and T-Mobile.

As one of the first LTE hardware providers for Verizon’s 4G LTE network the Droid Bionic falls in line with a lot of the technology we’ve seen so far this year at CES: dual-core, Cortex-A9, NVIDIA Tegra 2-based. With a 960×540 screen the display is fantastic which is nice for taking advantage of features like video chat.

It is a bit thicker than previous generations due to the LTE capabilities so bear that in mind. The Droid Bionic also comes with an HDMI output which lets you watch stored video and play games on a big screen but apparently it will not allow you to play video through apps like Netflix or Hulu which is a letdown.

Neither Verizon nor Motorola have announced pricing or availability dates, so hold your horses on the Droid Bionic.

The Cliq 2 has been developed for T-Mobile and the first thing that strikes you is the layout of the sliding keyboard. It’s got more of a honeycomb kind of membrane but is surprisingly comfortable and easy to use as the keys are domed and have a large surface area – a nice touch for users who hate typing on small keyboards.

Inside it’s running a 1Ghz processor which provides plenty of juice. The screen is a good 3.7” 854×480 and its wireless capabilities include 802.11n with Wi-Fi calling, Bluetooth and 3G. Its internet speed clocks in at 10.1Mbps which is higher than the original Cliq’s 7.2Mbps but slower than alternative T-Mobile HSPA+ smartphones.

Playing around with the phone it’s got a couple of nice touches like the ability to switch between work and home modes with each having its own wallpapers, email accounts and settings. There’s also the ability to organize apps into folders which is pretty nice if you’ve got lots of apps.

Motorola says the Cliq 2 will be out June 19^th for T-Mobile customers but pricing is still unknown.
