This is for the Sony VAIO SE1 Series with a 15.5-inch LED-backlit display and full 1080p HD resolution.

Under the hood, you find a second-generation Intel Core i5 2.4GHz processor with Intel Turbo Boost TEchnology 2.0, This is backed by 4GB of DDR3-1333 RAM and a 640GB 5400rpm hard drive, along with graphics by the way of AMD Radeon HD 6470M, including hybrid graphics support. There are two USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, an HDMI-out port, SD card reader, Memory Stick Duo slot, and VGA output. Not surprisingly, it all comes powered by Windows 7 Home Premium.
Gesture control, as you know, is not new, but it’s great when the feature is coming with a new laptop. With the new Sony VAIO 14P, the latest addition into the company’s E Series, you will be able to imagine that you are Obi-Wan Kenobi and flick through web pages, play music and adjust the volume by just waving your hands.

The new Windows 7 laptop picks up your hand movements via its 1.31 MP HD webcam which is powered by Exmor for PC. The gesture control feature is supported by the Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer 9, PowerPoint and PowerDVD.

Powered by a 2.3GHz Intel Core i3-2350M processor, the 14P is coming equipped with a 14-inch VAIO Display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 and 16:9 aspect, and it has a backlit keyboard activated by an ambient light sensor which also controls the dimming of the screen to save power. Present also is the DVD SuperMulti optical drive that powers down completely when not used and automatic switching between AMD Radeon HD 7670M graphics and integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 ensures efficient energy use.

You will also get 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM and 500GB of HDD along with two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports (one of the latter will charge your mobile), and many will love the sleek and funky design. The machine is available in white, black or pink, but unfortunately no hints about the price tag. Check out the Sony UK website if you want to know more about it.

It appears like CES 2012 is going to be an event mainly intended for the thinnest this and thinnest that, just like last year. The newly-unveiled Acer Aspire S5 Ultrabook, which is the successor to the company’s Aspire S3, is the thinnest of its kind and it’s definitely going to turn more than a few heads at Las Vegas.

The Aspire S5 measures in at a mere 15 mm at its thickest point and weighs less than 1.35 kg. The device comes equipped with a 13.3-inch LCD display, Onyx Black colored magnesium-alloy cover and palm rest, an Intel Core processor and uses SSD internal storage.

Similar to the Aspire S3, the S5 features Acer’s Green Instant On technology which promises a fast boot and resume experience of just 1.5 seconds.

The machine also comes with Acer’s Always Connect which will allow you to access AcerCloud for managing data stored on the S5, even if the device is in the sleep or hibernate mode. With the feature, you will be able to instantly view updates on your Facebook or Twitter accounts whenever you resume your S5. There won’t be any need for refreshing the web page.

One of the coolest features on the Aspire S5 is what Acer is calling “MagicFlip I/O”. With the special mechanism, the HDMI, USB 3.0, and Thunderbolt (20Gbps) ports remain hidden. You just have to press the MagicFlip key to open the port cover panel and get access to the ports.

Other features include Dolby Home Theater v4, a PowerSmart battery pack that provides three times longer battery life, and a chiclet keyboard. No word on pricing, but we do know that the S5 is coming sometime in Q2 this year.

Check out the video below, which comes to us courtesy of Netbooknews, to take a peek at the ultra thin design compared with a Vaio and you will also get to see how the MagicFlip works.

It’s nothing new to see ad campaigns where one company puts down the competition in one way or another. We’ve seen it with Coke and Pepsi. We’ve seen it with Mac and PC. And now, we could be seeing it with Sony and Apple.

We spotted this on a Toronto subway, the ad shows a young couple at a coffee joint, happily enjoying their Sony Vaio laptop. They stand out from the crowd, because they are the only human characters in the image. The rest of the folks at the coffee joint are blank-faced marionettes using what appear to be aluminum unibody notebooks.

Yes, none of those other laptops have the Apple logo on them, but it looks quite clear that the MacBook-ness is heavily implied. We can safely conclude that Sony is saying the Mac users are just puppets who have no personality of their own. Indeed, the tagline for the ad is “Stand Apart.”

The Sony VAIO line has always pushed its stylishness and this almost coy anti-Apple campaign is no exception.

Sony Europe’s new VAIO S series laptop is the ultimate workaholic’s tool: A 128GB Solid State Drive for rapid startups, a dual-battery option for 14 hours of life between charges, 3G connectivity for internet “everywair” and a hybrid graphics system for the perfect balance between performance and stamina.

The “full flat” magnesium notebook, standing less than an inch thick and weighing in at 1.75 kg (3.86 lbs), is loaded to the brim with snazzy options. An Intel Core i7-2620M processor, up to 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz SDRAM, an HD web cam powered by “Exmor,” a USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0; its 13.3″ VAIO Display Plus screen with 1366 x 768 resolution boasts low-reflection coating, meaning your Blu-ray movies will look clear and vibrant in any lighting conditions. If said conditions are too dark, the keyboard’s backlight will activate and the ambient light sensor will dim the screen to optimize viewing experience and battery life.

Inside, the Dynamic Hybrid Graphic System gauges the necessary amount of graphics needed for the task at hand and transitions accordingly between the integrated GPU and a high-performance AMD Radeon HD 6000 Series card with up to 1GB of VRAM. The focus is obviously on battery life, as the energy-sapping Radeon card is only used for such things as HD videos or Adobe programs, for example.

The SSD allows the computer to boot up Windows 7 Professional in half the time it takes for conventional computers, with a WEB button that brings users from shut down to online in seconds.

But most importantly, the dual battery option. One Lithium-polymer battery is incorporated into the body of the notebook, providing 7 hours on a charge. If that’s running out, the second flat battery slaps onto the bottom, doubling the life to 14 hours without the need to switch off the PC or remove the internal battery. It can be charged separately from the laptop, or the two can be charged simultaneously in the charging base while you work.

Finally, the embedded VAIO “everywair” 3G WWAN lets you connect to the internet via your mobile broadband operator at up to 7.2Mbps, meaning you’ll never miss a beat wherever you are.

The VAIO S will be available in March or April depending on the country; the price is so far unspecified.

Power in Motion: boost your productivity with new VAIO S Series

Power, design and mobility come together beautifully with the new VAIO S Series of 13.3” (33.7cm) slim notebook PCs from Sony.

The slim, light VAIO S Series features a stylish new ‘full flat’ design that’s crafted in magnesium with a wide aluminium palmrest for strength, lightness, usability and looks. There’s also a cleverly concealed hinge mechanism that doesn’t distract your view of what’s on screen. Overall thickness shrinks to less than 24mm, while weight is a travel-friendly 1.75kg (approx.)

VAIO S Series introduces a smart new battery concept that lets you keep working day and night without a pause. The internal lithium polymer battery provides power for up to 7 hours on-the-go computing (in Stamina mode). It’s partnered by a second thin, flat optional lithium polymer extended battery that can be charged separately from the PC and added without removing the internal battery. The second battery attaches without having to switch off the PC, boosting stamina to up to 14 hours if you’re far from mains power.

Dynamic Hybrid Graphic System switches seamlessly between the integrated GPU and high-performance AMD Radeon™ HD 6000 Series card (with either 512MB or 1GB VRAM), according to the task at hand. Whether you’re watching processor-intensive HD videos or just simple note-taking, you’ll always enjoy the optimum balance between performance and battery stamina.

With a resolution of 1366×768, the real wide aspect ratio display is perfectly proportioned for browsing dual web pages side by side.

The backlit isolation keyboard allows comfortable typing by day or night. There’s also an ambient light sensor that automatically dims brightness of the high-quality VAIO Display to conserve power when the lights are low.

VAIO S Series is designed with day-to-day productivity firmly in mind. Fast Boot gets you up and running with 50% quicker than conventional notebook when loading of Genuine Windows® 7. It’s a valuable time-saver if you’re on a deadline or rushing for the airport. There’s also a conveniently-placed WEB button that powers up your PC for Internet access in seconds. It’s ideal for checking any last-minute e-mails while sitting in a café or departure lounge.
