There are already a great variety of multitools out there to choose from. And we love Gerber. But, apart from allowing you to unscrew something or pull a thorn out of your thumb, the Gerber Tripod Multitool has got the rest beat; acting as a tripod for your smartphone or compact digital camera. The product, which we saw last year, is now finally shipping.

The mini tripod for your smartphone or digicam holds a maximum weight of 340 grams. It comes with two legs which fold out in the front, and its base will act as the third leg. You will find a standard-size screw mount on the top. You can also play with wire cutters, a bottle opener (everybody’s favorite), a fine edge blade, screwdrivers, but not all at once of course.

So for $59.99, taking that group shot of you and your fellow travellers in the middle of nowhere won’t certainly be a big challenge for you, and all the other tools will make survival that much easier. But if photography is never going to be a hobby for you, you can stick to a Swiss Army knife.

Gerber Tripod Multitool components:

Tripod functionality

Standard 1/4-20 Camera Mount Screw

Suction Cell phone attachment

Fine edge blade

Serrated blade

Micro flat, square cross, and medium flat screwdrivers

These days there are hundreds of iPhone and Smartphone accessories out in the market. A good accessory stands out by either being unique or doing a better job than similar products. So what makes the camera tripod, Capta, any different than other tripods? First off, Capta isn’t just a tripod. Adwale Adlusi-Adeluyi and Bojan Smiljanic’s invention is designed to have multiple functions and the flexibility to stick with you even when you move to a new smartphone. The Capta can be a tripod, a stand, and even mounted in the car. The idea behind Capta is that you shouldn’t have to buy multiple different devices and accessories for multiple phones.

Many products claim to have multiple purposes but when it comes to implementation they fall apart after a few uses or the adhesive stops working. According to its designers, the Capta is made of solid aluminum that should be able to handle most knocks it will take. Additionally the phone attaches through a pad that uses a proprietary blend of polyurethane. In English, the pad should stick to any phone and won’t wear out easily allowing you to remove your phone or even trade up to a new phone easily without having to replace the Capta. To remove your phone you simply twist it off and it doesn’t leave any adhesive residue. In order to keep the pad sticking, you simply hold it under running water and it will become as good (and sticky) as the day you received it. We saw this similar technology used on the Wowee one.

For now the Capta is in the fund raising stage, and the creators are talking pledges from prospective customers on Kickstarter. A minimum pledge of $25 will get you a Capta of your own when they finally start production. Overall, Capta looks to potentially be an interesting accessory that could certainly reduce the amount of accessories we have to carry around for our smartphones.

The iPad 2 is not really meant to replace your professional camcorder, but that hasn’t stopped some people from trying to achieve YouTube fame through videos shot on the iPad. Now they can step up production a notch or two with the Makayama Movie Mount for the iPad 2.

Basically, it’s a tripod for the Apple tablet, plus a case to hold the thing in place. There are also two shoes for you to attach microphones, lights, and whatever other accessories you may choose to use, as well as a mount for lenses if you want to go further than what the iPad would shoot on its own. I guess this could be a fun little project, but the video quality really isn’t going to be much better than a cheap Flip.

You’ll certainly get a few looks if you choose to shoot your “professional” interview segments with a contraption like this and maybe that’s half the point. In any case, the Movie Mount will start shipping next month for $69.95, though they are accepting pre-orders right now.

When I first heard about this product, I was terribly confused. Isn’t Gerber the company that produces a bunch of baby food and baby products? Yes, there is a Gerber Products Company, but that’s not the Gerber behind this new Steady multitool. This company is Gerber Legendary Blades, headquartered in Oregon and a subdivision of Fiskar Brands of Finland.

Okay, with that out of the way, we can take a look at the product itself. Gerber has a bunch of different multitools that are similar in scope to a Swiss Army knife, meaning a bunch of tools are shoved into a smallish device. With the Gerber Steady, one of its functions includes a mini tripod for digital cameras. Two legs fold out in the front, the base of the tool acts as the third leg in the minipod, and there’s a tripod screw mount on the top.

Naturally, this won’t do you a heck of a lot of good if you’re trying to steady up your Canon Digital Rebel, but it’s perfectly fine for your PowerShot. I can see quite clearly that at least one of the other tools is a blade of some kind and Gerber is saying that the Steady multitool will have a total of 12 doohickeys in it when it launches next year. Expect the tool to sell for $65.
