Remember the TransPhone? It’s the device which is similar to the ASUS Padfone, although not entirely so as it is cheaper and a bit different in design. Well now, the makers of the TransPhone have announced a successor to the device: the TransPhone 2. The new system will be available in three versions. The Basic, Pro and Pro+ smartphones that will arrive with a bigger tablet part (with an 8-inch screen) unlike the original version.

With the basic TransPhone 2 handset you will get a 4-inch TFT screen with a resolution of 845 × 480, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of on-board storage, 8GB pre-installed SD card, a 5 megapixel cam, front-facing camera, and will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The tablet for this device features 1024×768 resolution and a 4,000 mAh battery giving you 5,500 mAh when you dock your smartphone. The system will be available with a price tag of $299.

The Pro version increases RAM to 1GB, and there will be 8GB onboard storage, 32 GB preinstalled internal SD card, and both the smartphone and the tablet of this system feature IPS screens. This version is expected to cost around $399.

On top of the Pro specs, the Pro+ features 32 GB onboard storage and a 32 GB internal SD card. You will also get a 3 megapixel front-facing cam. Gorilla glass protection is available on the smartphone as well as the tablet of this system. It will cost around $449. And if you need a bigger screen for the Pro+ there will be a 10-inch tablet available.

All the versions will be available later this year. So what do you think, are you interested?

The TransPhone by ExoTablet, a frankestein creation of technology, merging the smartphone and tablet using a sliding dock mechanism. The concept is ingenius, but can it satisfy a road warriors insatiable need to find that all-in-one device?

We got a pre-release version of the TransPhone and have had a couple weeks to put it through the wringer. Real world use and in the lab; the TransPhone definitely has a unique concept going for it.

Hardware

The smartphone is modestly-equipped, a quad-band handset with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 CPU clocked at 800 MHz, 512 MB RAM and 512MB ROM. It’s display is a 3.5-inch capacitive multi-touch TFT LCD with a resolution of 800×480 (WXVGA), overall it weighs 4.0 ounces (114 grams) which is substantially lighter than the iPhone 4s, which weighs in at 4.8 ounces (137 grams), all this is powered by a 1450 mAh Li-on battery.

The tablet dock is a 7-inch multi-touch TFT LCD, it activates once you slide your TransPhone into it’s rear docking mechanism. Then the magic begins; your smartphone is now a 7-inch tablet. Mind you the resolution is the same 800×480, it’s just on a bigger screen. Inside the tablet dock is an extra battery pack (2850 mAh) giving you a convenient dual power supply for when you don’t have time to plug in. Also dual speakers are on the rear to enhance your multimedia experience. A couple toggles also allow you to lock the orientation, and another to switch over to the tablet battery pack.

In your hands your though, you can tell you are holding a MIC device. It’s light, hollow and plastic allover. But it does have a nice form factor with its curved back. The TransPhone logo is under the earpiece which has a funky retro design. The finish is shiny black on top and around the sides and soft matte white on the back plate. A small triangle on the back tells you where to dock the TransPhone in to the tablet. At first it was confusing, that’s how I thought the back plate would be removed to insert a SIM, but no, it’s just to direct you in the tablet dock. The back plate is removed typically from the bottom up. The dock connector port is an inverted Apple 30 pin with maybe 1 mm more thickness. It’s not interchangeable with an Apple cable, and even though an Apple cable will plug in to the TransPhone, it won’t charge it.

Specifications

TransPhone Smartphone

800 MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 CPU

3.5” TFT LCD Capacitive Display (800 x 480 WVGA with 16 million colors)

GSM, WCDMA, GPRS, EDGE (850/900/1800/1900), HSDPA, WCDMA (1900/2100)

Bluetooth 2.1, WIFI (IEEE 802.11 n / b / g)

5M rear camera with LED flash (2592 × 1944 pixels, 640×480 VGA, 30fps)

0.3M front facing camera

512 MB RAM

512 MB ROM

32 GB Class 10 Micro SD

1450 mAh Battery

4.0 ounces (114 grams)

TransPhone Tablet

7” TFT LCD Capacitive Display (800 x 480 WVGA with 16 million colors)

2800 mAh Battery

13.2 oz (374 grams)

Software

Running Android 2.3.5, the TransPhone does seem to be slightly dated in appearance. Although the 800 MHz CPU seems to handle 2.3.5 quite well, the only lag I have experienced is on first boot when loading icons on the Android desktop. After that it’s very responsive and quick in switching tasks and loading up applications. It does not come bundled with anything but yes, its works with the Google Play store.

Performance

First and foremost this is a smartphone, so call quality should be one of the most important things. Aside from a glitch we only encountered once where the speakerphone didn’t activate, audio is clear and crisp but lacks the bandwidth we’ve heard on higher end phones like the iPhone 4s or Galaxy S. It could be described as tinny or hollow.

The tablet dock is a great concept, but doesn’t perform as we would have liked. Enlarging the 800×480 WXVGA display from a 3.5-inch screen to a 7-inch one is very obvious. You can see tremendous pixelation overall as your desktop and icons are extrapolated through pixel stretching. But it gets worse. You would expect to start from where you left off when you were using your smartphone, but no, for an odd experience that just kills any flow, when you dock the TransPhone in the tablet, the springboard is relaunched and whatever you were doing is now gone. Yes, it’s gone and you must begin once again. This has to be the worst thing and really hurts the devices ability to provide the user with a seamless experience. I personally can’t get over that, but if it’s not a big deal to you and you’ll be ok with starting over with what you are doing whenever you wish to switch between phone and tablet, then you’ll be fine.

Pros

Offers the ability to enlarge your smartphone screen

Affordable, at $299 for a smartphone and tablet combo you’ll be hard pressed to find something else at this price

Cons

Tablet resolution is pixelated

Smartphone LCD response is not optimal to touch

No seamless switching between smartphone and tablet mode

Outdated Android OS

Overall

It’s a fun little Android phone, a great concept and will appeal to many new Android users who are on the fence about buying a tablet and a phone and really just want’s to get in on what’s new. It would make an amazing first phone or tablet for many, but seasoned mobile warriors will probably want to look elsewhere.

With increasingly larger screens on our smartphones, it’s clear enough that people want to have both a smartphone and a tablet. The Transphone is aiming to bridge that gap too and we’ve got the first exclusive hands-on photos of the upcoming device.

It works in much the same way as the Asus PadFone in that you have a smartphone portion and then this can be “docked” into the back of a tablet to give you the bigger screen experience. The 7-inch tablet (ExoTablet) is still “powered” by the smartphone, so everything is seamless as far as apps, media, contacts, and other data. There’s no need to sync your data between the two devices, because they’re effectively one and the same.

Based on the side-by-side pictures, it looks to be almost exactly the same dimensions as the iPhone 4/4S, including what looks like a 3.5-inch SVGA screen. We hear that the Transphone is being produced by CMIT. The rumors point toward a dual-core Qualcomm processor. It’s an Android device and word is that it will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich. The tablet portion has its own internal battery and you get dual battery icons in Android when you’re using the tablet. There appears to be a proprietary Apple-like connector too.

The first shipments of the TransPhone will be available through Exotablet.com starting on September 1st for $499.
