OpenMobile ACL For webOS Coming In July

The main problem faced by all HP Touchpad users is the scarcity of apps, but of course dual booting into Android is a good way to access apps that are unavailable. If all goes as it should, a better solution could arrive in just a few months, provided you are willing to help Phoenix International Communications in their attempt to resurrect OpenMobile’s ACL for webOS.

In case you are new to ACL, it’s Application Compatibility Layer, and it allows running of Android apps on non-Android devices. The webOS ACL will allow users to run Android apps alongside native webOS applications, and its alpha version appear to be working fine on a Touchpad as you will see in the video below.

Since OpenMobile worked on the project earlier, Phoenix is promising that the final build will be available for purchase and download by July. It’s a Kickstarter project and they have, at the time of writing this, managed $5,991 of the $35,000 goal with 24 days to go.

They are offering various gifts including a copy of the ACL software, their LED flashlight keychain, and even the developer’s Touchpad depending on how much you pledge.

HP Slate 7 Android Tablet Announced, But Can it Compete?

HP surely learned a lot of lessons when they tried to take on the iPad with their webOS-based Touchpad, the sales of which were stopped after just seven weeks. Now it appears they have targeted the Google Nexus 7 with their first ever Android tablet, the HP Slate 7. The new tablet is intended for the budget segment, but the question is whether it will succeed against its top rivals.

Running the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS, the HP Slate 7 costs just $169, cheaper than the $199 Google Nexus 7. But the Slate 7 is slightly more expensive than budget 7-inchers from Acer (Iconia B1) and the Asus (Memo Pad).

Specs wise the device is not that impressive, but it seems to be just about right for the low price. The device sports a 7-inch HFFS display with a resolution of 1024×600, lower than the Nexus 7.

It also features a 1.6 GHz dual-core A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 3MP rear camera and a VGA front facing cam. In comparison, the Iconia B1 has no rear cam and boasts just 512MB of RAM, and no rear camera and only a single core processor on the Memo Pad. The Slate 7 is coming with 8GB on-board storage, but you can extend it with the microSD card slot. The device also features Beats Audio and the HP ePrint application, which will allow you to print directly over Wi-Fi.

So the specs are not that bad for that price range, but still HP is a bit late to enter this segment and an April launch means that other rivals may also arise. While HP hopes to compete thanks to its slightly cheaper pricing than the Nexus 7, that extra $30 for Google’s flagship 7-incher gets you a quad-core Tegra 3 processor,, GPS, NFC, and 16GB of storage.

The HP Slate 7 is an attractive enough tablet, though it doesn’t seem to offer any “WOW” factor either. What do you think of the HP Slate 7, does it bring anything new or worthwhile to set HP apart in the growing budget 7-inch market?

HP Makes Good On Open Source Promise With Open webOS 1.0

We had previously thought that the webOS platform died alongside the firesale of the HP TouchPad, but then the company gave it new life when it announced their open source initiative. HP is now making good on its earlier promise by officially announcing Open webOS 1.0, the completely open source version of the webOS platform that powered the TouchPad, Pre, Pixi, and Veer.

To be fair, the open source Open webOS 1.0 isn’t exactly ready for primetime yet, but HP is dedicated to it. The current timeline calls for a completion of the open source project by September, but there will be updates along the way that will get you that much closer to the final product.

Going along with this development is the release of Enyo, the application framework that was used with webOS 3.0 and the HP TouchPad. That’s available to devs and hackers right now. In fact, a complete refresh called Enyo 2.0 is also in the works and it will not be tied to Webkit at all. This means that developers can create apps that are fully browser-independent, working just fine in everything from IE to Firefox to Chrome. For Open webOS 1.0, they’re also making a switch to a standard Linux kernel, not unlike what you get with Google Android.

Check out the proposed timeline above. While the beta builds for devs will get rolled out every month or so, regular end users won’t get their official hands on a version of Open webOS 1.0 until “late summer.” That may include webOS devices beyond the TouchPad too, like the Pre, Pixi, Veer series and who knows, maybe a TouchPad Go.

Price on HP TouchPad tablet plummets to $99.99

Mere days after HP announced that it was getting out of the webOS game, it seems that just about every retailer has opened up a fire sale on the TouchPad tablet and other webOS devices. If you’re lucky enough to find one in stock, the 16GB Wi-Fi TouchPad can be yours for just $99.99.

Unfortunately, just about everyone is out of stock. I tried calling around to a few different stores last night — Best Buy, Future Shop, The Source — and they all had the same response: we’re out of stock. I even tried to do the clever thing and get a price match done at Staples, which was still listing the TouchPad at its already reduced $399.99 price point, and get 10% of the difference… but I was clearly not the only one to come up with that hare-brained scheme.

Even if you’re willing to bump up to the 32GB model, which has been universally slashed down to $149.99 from $499.99, you’re still going to have a really hard time finding one in stock. People had absolutely no interest in the TouchPad when its price was on par with other tablets, but now they can’t stock enough of them at this ridiculously low price.

And I can’t blame the consumers, really. The TouchPad is still a decent device, webOS is great (even if it may not get the full HP support), and this price is unbelievable. Some stores even have webOS phones like the Veer and Pre3 at bargain bin prices. Good luck hunting down a cheap TouchPad, but there you have it. Now that webOS has a larger established user base, maybe HP’d be interested in licensing it out to other companies?

HP internal testing reveals webOS running twice as fast on iPad

Most folks in the know will agree that webOS was is one great operating system and it never got the right kind of push that it needed. I think we can blame it on the hardware. Apparently, some internal testing at HP led to the loading of webOS onto an Apple iPad and, well, it blew the TouchPad out of the water.

The precise details are quite scarce, but we’re hearing that webOS ran “twice as fast” on the Apple iPad hardware than it did on the HP TouchPad. This leads us to believe that it’s the hardware, and not the software, that led to the ultimate demise of webOS at HP. After all, the actual hardware for the TouchPad was already in place before HP acquired Palm. It’s two year old tech with a spanking new OS.

The wording is a little unclear, but it seems that webOS was run both natively on Apple’s hardware as well as being run through the mobile Safari browser as a web app. Even in the latter, where two operating systems were almost being run in tandem, webOS was “running many times faster in the browser than it did on the TouchPad.”

So, what does this mean moving forward? If HP does indeed go ahead with licensing webOS out to other manufacturers, the platform could get the push that it needs and deserves. The Google-Motorola deal might lead guys like Samsung and HTC away from Android and into the webOS fold. Maybe.

HP TouchPad webOS tablet slashed down to just $399

Yes! The great thing about competition is that all the different companies are fighting for your hard earned money. In the increasingly crowded markets for tablets, HP is apparently having some trouble getting enough attention, so they’ve dropped the price on the TouchPad down a solid one hundred dollars. Cheaper is good, right?

The entry-level HP TouchPad can now be had for just $399, rather than the $499 price point that it had at time of launch. This gets you the 16GB model. If you want 32GB, you’ll need to toss in an extra $100. In terms of price, this puts the TouchPad ahead of the Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1, and iPad, but just on par with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer (sans keyboard dock).

Remember that Acer also cut the price on its entry-level Iconia Tab down to $395 earlier this month, so it seems that the sub-$400 range is the current sweet spot. That’s cheaper than most of the newer (unlocked and unsubsidized) smartphones out there. I know there are a few options in the $299 range, but until these big players get down there, I’m thinking $399 is where it’s at for the next little while.

HP TouchPad 4G from AT&T rocks upgraded 1.5GHz processor

What’s that? You just picked up the HP TouchPad and you think you’re the new king of the tablet kingdom? Think again. HP has already one-upped itself, because an upgraded version of the webOS tablet has been formally announced and it comes with two notable bumps on the spec sheet.

First, this isn’t just a regular TouchPad; it’s the HP TouchPad 4G. That signifies connectivity with AT&T’s 4G network. Unfortunately, it’s 4G as in HSPA+ and not 4G as in LTE. Secondly, they’ve bumped the processor from the stock 1.2GHz unit to a faster 1.5GHz CPU.

I imagine that’ll give you an edge in performance, but it might bite away at the battery life. Rounding out the feature set are the same things you find on the regular TouchPad, like the 9.7-inch display, GPS, and 32GB of storage. Pricing and availability have not yet been revealed, but if they want to stay competitive, the TouchPad 4G can’t come at much (or any) of a premium over the regular one. I don’t think it’s the speed or connectivity that’ll hurt the TouchPad 4G; it’s the relative lack of apps in the HP App Catalog.

Official: HP TouchPad WebOS tablet

The HP TouchPad has been announced today at the HP/Palm Think Beyond webOS event. It’s the companies first jointly created tablet to run purely on the webOS platform, and the first of a family of slate devices to emerge into the market.

The TouchPad is a 9.7-inch 1024×768 multitouch slate measuring just 13.7mm thick and weighing 1.5lbs. It will have a “bright display” for easy viewing indoors and outdoors. Video calling support with a 1.3 megapixel webcam, 802.11 B/G/N, 16/32GB storage space, 1GB of RAM, with a dual-core 8660 1.2Ghz CPU. Gyro, accelerometer and compass, but no barometer.

The packaged software will be Google Docs, QuickOffice, Dropbox, box.net and VPN. A virtual keyboard with number row should be popular. A bunch of configuration options for email, from single panel, dual and triple panel inbox control. Multitasking is “true multitasking” and a lot more. This version is Wi-Fi only, with a 3G version coming later on. No pricing information as of yet, expect a “summer” release.

Mobile productivity

Hanvon Touchpad B10 Windows 7 tablet vonts to be an iPad

Now that the Apple iPad is officially available to all international markets, we can fully expect a ceaseless flood of clones and knockoffs. One of the newer devices to join the fray is the Touchpad B10 tablet from Hanvon. Never heard of Hanvon? You’re not alone. I didn’t know who they were either when I went to the press conference at Computex. Apparently, the Chinese company was founded in 1998, based in Beijing, and focuses on “various intelligent pattern recognition technologies and products.”

In addition to yet another e-book reader and a Wacom-esque graphics tablet, Hanvon had its Touchpad to show off. On paper, this thing sounds like it might have the iPad beat. Processing comes from a 1.3GHz Intel Celeron ULV, storage is a 250GB SATA hard drive, with a 10.1-inch display offering capacitive touch.

I wasn’t able to get the thing to turn on by the time I got around to looking at it (maybe the battery was dead), but the spec sheet said that the Hanvon TouchPad B10 ran Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit). Personally, I don’t think Windows is really appropriate for the iPad-competing market. Something like Android is a much better fit. Regarding hands-on impressions, the Hanvon tablet felt thicker and heavier than the iPad, but the aesthetics were awfully reminiscent of Steve Jobs’ favorite new toy.
