When we were first introduced to the Microsoft Surface, Microsoft wasn’t exactly forthcoming with the pricing structure. We were just told that the RT version would be “competitive” with ARM-based tablets and the Pro version would be “competitive” with ultrabooks. And now it looks like that is mostly coming to fruition.

What you see here is the Lenovo ThinkPad 2. It’s a Windows 8 tablet that will ship with a full QWERTY keyboard, giving you a laptop-like experience when you need it. And it’s going to sell for $799. This was formally revealed at PepCom in New York City where the Lenovo rep said that the ThinkPad 2 would indeed sell for that price when it launched on October 26.

Remember that this isn’t “just” a tablet. Realistically, it’s probably closer to being a really thin ultrabook with a touchscreen, thanks to the Intel processor under the hood. It gets Windows 8 Pro, a 1366×768 IPS display, 10 hour battery life, dual cameras (2MP + 8MP), AT&T-compatible LTE, NFC, USB ports, and a stylus. The $799 price also includes the full Microsoft Office 2013 suite, but I hear that the keyboard doesn’t have an “extra” battery like what you get with Asus Transformer Pad series.

$800 might sound like a lot of money for a tablet, but when you consider that most ultrabooks start at around this range, this doesn’t so far out there. That said, it’s rumored to have just an Atom “Clover Trail” chip rather than something from the Core i3/i5/i7 series, so your performance could be significantly hindered. What do you think? Would you buy it at $800?

Although there are many military-grade laptops out there to choose from, it is still a bit difficult to find a good rugged machine for all the young users in schools. Lenovo has churned out tough devices earlier, but this is the first time that they are introducing a classroom-ready rugged laptop under the ThinkPad brand name.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X130e, which will be sold to schools in December with a price tag starting at $469, is coming with specific improvements which will help it to withstand the occasional fall or the abuse a notebook is likely to suffer in the hands of the students.

As you might not have forgotten, the X130e was earlier assumed to be the successor to the X120e when leaked pictures of the device started appearing on the internet. Now, the device has become official.

The 11.6 inch X130e, which will be available with an Intel Core i3-2367M processor or AMD Fusion E-300 or E-450 APU, comes equipped with a rubber bumper on the top cover, a thicker bezel, strong corners and hinges, and reinforced and recessed ports.

You will get up to 8GB of RAM and 500GB in storage, Bluetooth 3.0, and it will be powered by a 6-cell battery which is coming with a battery life of 8.5 hours.

Other features include 3 USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI, VGA, Gigabit Ethernet, a combined headphone / mic port, and a 4-in-1 memory card reader. The laptop also comes with the company’s RapidBoot technology, which is expected to provide a sub-20-second start-up time.

The downside is that all durable features in the new ThinkPad has resulted in a machine weighing in at 3.9 pounds (1.78kg), fairly heavy for an 11-incher (although Lenovo says it is “lightweight”).

In general, I like Lenovo products, especially stuff from their business line. The company is continuing a similar approach with a couple of new additions in the form of the ThinkPad Edge E425 and the ThinkPad Edge E525. These are meant to provide a "slimmer, more polished design" to go along with enough juice to keep your business running on the go.

In general, I like Lenovo products, especially stuff from their business line. The company is continuing a similar approach with a couple of new additions in the form of the ThinkPad Edge E425 and the ThinkPad Edge E525. These are meant to provide a “slimmer, more polished design” to go along with enough juice to keep your business running on the go.

The two versions are much the same, except the Edge E425 has a 14-inch screen, while the E525 has a 15.6-inch screen. Both are powered by the AMD A-Series Accelerated Processing Units (APUs) with VISION Pro Technology, integrated AMD Radeon discrete-class graphics, and an optional fingerprint reader for business-level security. Storage options go up to 750GB and RAM gets up to 8GB. The usual USB, DVD, media card reader, and HDMI are in tow as well.

They’re also including something called Lenovo AutoLock. The integrated webcam detects when the user walks away, locking up the PC in his or her absence. Sometimes, you forget to log out from your workstation or you just need to step away for a moment. Pricing for both the E425 and E525 will start in the $549 range when they ship later this month.

In related news, Lenovo also announced the 14-inch ThinkVision LT1421 Wide, which serves as a mobile monitor to accompany your laptop on the go. That also ships this month with the price tag set at $219.99.

When you think about crossover vehicles, they typically fit somewhere between a standard sedan and a larger SUV. With the recent leak of the ThinkPad X1 from Lenovo, we find a notebook PC that’s try to straddle between the consumer and business markets.

Does that really work? Well, the average business user probably still enjoys some consumer-friendly features. With the ThinkPad X1, you get that corporate black styling that we’ve come to expect from the ThinkPad line, along with an encrypted hard drive, hardware-based password manager, and fingerprint reader.

But on the consumer side, you also get Dolby audio, a super thin profile that rivals the MacBook Air, HDMI output, and backlit keyboard. You can configure the X1 with a range of Core i5/i7 processors, along with Windows 7 Professional, a USB 3.0 port, DisplayPort, a single RAM slot with support up to 8GB, and a 160GB SSD. As is the case with competitors like the Samsung Series 9, there is no optical drive here.

When you walk into a business environment, you can’t exactly do it with a cherry red laptop. That just won’t demand the same kind of serious respect that a regular black ThinkPad can demand. That said, the X1 offers a slim and svelte package (along with a button-less trackpad and that signature red nub of a TrackPoint) that shows you’ve got style too. Prices start at $1,399 and go up with your upgrades.

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane. A stroll all the way back to the ancient history of 2008. It is there that we discover the decidedly compact (at the time) Lenovo ThinkPad X200. It’s not around anymore, at least not officially, but that hasn’t stopped the knockoff manufacturers from producing a lookalike.

As far as clones and knockoff products go, this faux ThinkPad actually does a pretty good job of replicating the look of the storied old laptop. You get that characteristic matte finish of the ThinkPad, as well as the red nubby of a mouse pointer, and a (non-functional, as far as we can tell) blue ThinkVantage button.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that you’ll likely be disappointed with the netbook-grade internals. Power comes by way of a measily 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, backed up with GMA 3150 graphics, 1GB of RAM, 16GB HDD, three USB 2.0 ports, and a 4400mAh battery. At least you get a half-decent 11.6-inch matte 1366×768 display.

As can be expected, the clone also comes at a fraction of the price of the original. Head over to your favorite underground importer to find the fake ThinkPad X200 for under $300.
