We knew Temple Run was a popular series, but just how popular? It turns out that Temple Run 2 is the fastest growing mobile game ever released, managing 50 million downloads in just one day short of two weeks since its release. This surpasses the old record holder, Angry Birds Space.

According to the co-founder of Imangi, Keith Sheperd, the game has performed beyond our wildest dreams,” further mentioning, “Temple Run has evolved into something so much bigger than us.”

While Temple Run managed to accumulate 170 million downloads, it has been around much longer than the sequel. At the rate things are going, it is clear that Temple Run 2 is nothing less than a runaway hit. Have you tried Temple Run 2 out for yourself yet, if so what do you think?

Last week we told you that Imangi Studios was releasing Temple Run 2 for iOS devices. It was also made official by Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi, that an Android version was to be released on January 24th.

“We really wanted to try and do a simultaneous release, but being a small team I feel that the iOS launch is overwhelming enough! Let’s give ourselves one more week to iron out any problems we haven’t spotted,” says Shepherd.

A weeks wait is not too bad compared to the 7 month wait between iOS and Android for the original version of Temple Run. Microsoft has promised that Temple Run will be arriving on Windows 8 Phones in, well, sometime soon. Nobody really knows exactly when that will happen, but promises have been made that it is already in the works. Hang tight Redmond fans.

After just one day in Google Play, Temple Run 2 has received over 9,000 reviews and maintained an average rating of 4.6. The only bad ratings so far seem to be coming from disgruntled users that are having issues.

The game requires Android 2.1+ and works flawlessly on both the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7 (personal tests). The only issue I have so far is an elongated splash screen of about 11 seconds.

Whether you have heard or not, Temple Run 2, was just released for iOS devices the other day. The sequel brings back everything Temple Run fans loved about the first, but with major improvements to the visuals and much more. What about Android users? Fear not, a version for Android devices is expected to be right around the corner. 

According to Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi, the Android version is almost done and he expects it will be released in the Google Play store sometime within the next week.  He did add however, “with these things, you never know,” so there is a possibility of some delays. The original Temple Run version however is yet to be released on Microsoft Windows Phone even though the Redmond company did promise back on October 29th that the game would eventually be released. So Windows 8 and Phone 8 users will have to sit tight and wait for now.
