Forget about it. That’s like considering fuel economy when you’re trying to make the world’s fastest racecar. I might not put the T-Mobile G2 in the same sentence as a Bugatti Veyron or a Pagani Zonda F, but they have managed to make this thing soar with some overclocking genius.

Last month, the enthusiasts were able to take the stock 800MHz processor under the hood of the Android phone and push it to 1.344GHz, almost doubling its clock speed. Now, someone has pushed it even further to a whopping 1.9GHz.

The T-Mobile G2, which is basically the same as the HTC Desire Z, has been permanently rooted and this is opening all sorts of possibilities. At 1.9GHz, that makes the processor in the G2 even faster than certain netbooks and notebooks, at least in terms of clock speed.

Is it stable? Probably not. Will it suck through your battery life like there’s no tomorrow? Most definitely. Even so, this is quite the feat and their efforts should clearly be applauded.

Overclock shop talk usually happens around people with water-cooled desktop computers, but smartphones are no stranger to this realm either. You know that 800MHz processor under the hood of the T-Mobile G2? While the phone remains locked, they’ve figured out how to turbocharge that sucker up to 1.344GHz.

That’s getting close to doubling its effective clock speed, resulting in quite the monster of a smartphone. Remember that a stock G2, which is basically the same as the HTC Desire Z, is already reasonably peppy with its 800MHz processor and it’s mostly able to keep up with its 1GHz compatriots.

This monumental increase in performance was achieved by some guy who calls himelf coolbho3k and the score was shown using the Quadrant benchmarking tool. This tool handles CPU speed, file input and output speeds, and 2D and 3D graphics speed, but the only tweak was the CPU speed increase. A few more upgrades in those other areas and you’ve got one crazy phone.

Similarly, coolbho3k ran his super-clocked T-Mobile G2 through LinPack. This software measures the ability of the processor to perform “floating point operations,” which are random, complicated “new math” problems. The G2 pumped out a score of 40, which is more than respectable. Anything about 35 is considered pretty darn fast.

Will your battery life suffer from running at almost double the stock clock speed? Definitely. Will you want to run it at 1.3+ GHz full-time? Probably not, but this is still a very cool exercise in what is possible.

I’m on the fence with jailbreaking. I’ve done it on many devices, but is it worth it in the end? Sure, you get access to apps you may not have had access to on your “factory sealed” model, but then you lose support and are in a constant fight for the latest jailbreak. If you own the T-Mobile G2 and have tried jailbreaking, you may have noticed it didn’t work all as planned.

Apparently the phone ships with a rootkit that will override changes made by the enduser – refreshing the original Android OS and firmware right back to what you started with. Just because you paid for that phone doesn’t mean you own it, according to HTC and T-Mobile. I guess its one clever way to keep your customers “safe” and it’s thanks to a microchip embedded within the G2 that made this possible. The members at Dev Forum have attempted endlessly to jailbreak the G2 with no results.

The big question is, does it matter that much? If you don’t have full control over your G2, do you really care so long as it does what it was initially set out to do? And why hasn’t Apple implemented such chips in their devices? Do they plan to? Or is a jailbroken world all a part of their plan? Would you buy an iPhone 5 per say, if it had an eFuse kill switch on board to revert unsanctioned updates?

Before you get too excited about the prospects of getting a shiny new G2, you should know that the launch date for the Android phone is still scheduled to happen on October 6. The good news, though, is that you can place you pre-order at Best Buy’s store to guarantee one in your pocket on launch day.

I can’t say whether T-Mobile stores are offering the pre-orders just yet, but Best Buy will more than gladly take your deposit to guarantee your place in line for the new phone when it hits early next month. The price is the expected $200 with a two-year contract. Go sans contract and expect to pay upwards to $700 for a unit.

As a quick refresher, the T-Mobile G2 comes powered by a 800MHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and it’ll run a vanilla version of Google Android 2.2. There will no HTC Sense or other user interface overlay to get in your way. The other major highlight is its access to T-Mobile’s new HSPA+ network for speeds up to 21Mbps downstream (though the G2 is spec’d only to handle up to 14.4Mbps).

Earlier this week we were teased with the pending availability of the T-Mobile G2 smartphone, how it was going to boast the new HSPA+ network, and a sad excuse of a teaser pic. Now, we’re getting a live photo of what this upcoming Android device is actually going to look like. The T-Mobile G2 is the official successor to the original T-Mobile G1, even though several other Android phones have come down the chute in the interim. The G2 is basically a T-Mobile rebranded version of the HTC Vision.

As you can see here, it gets an optical trackpad, large touchscreen display, and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. We also know that it’ll rock one of those newer 1GHz chips inside, offering you some peppy processing to go with the peppy HSPA+ high-speed network.

Along with the T-Mobile G2, two Windows phones are also making their “photographic debuts.” AT&T is getting its hands on the Samsung Cetus, complete with video calling and Windows Phone 7. The other Windows Phone 7 device is the LG C900 and it has a QWERTY keyboard, a touchscreen (possibly 480×800), and a processor of at least the 1GHz variety.

Are you anxious to get your hands on the latest Google-fueled hotness? T-Mobile wants you to look its way, because a teaser site has been set up to promote the upcoming T-Mobile G2. They didn’t get terribly creative with the name, but it is meant to be the official successor to the T-Mobile G1.

As you recall, the G1 was the first smartphone to rock the Google Android. Borrowing a line from Cupertino, everything might be changing all over again with this upcoming handset. The specs are left up for speculation at the moment, but it has been confirmed that this phone will be the first to run on T-Mobile’s new HSPA+ network.

They’re marketing it as running at “4G speeds,” but HSPA+ isn’t technically 4G. For rumors, we’re hearing that T-Mobile will once again be sourcing the hardware from HTC, the device could indeed be the oft-rumored myTouch HD, and it could hit store shelves as early as next month.
