When it comes to those iconic Swiss Army knives, Wenger has to be one of the first names that comes to mind. That said, it may not always be convenient to dangle a bulky utility knife around your neck and that’s why Wenger has announced the more streamlined HypeX line of utility pendants. They’re like Swiss Army knives, except lighter and sleeker.

At launch, there will be six different offerings as part of the HypeX family from Wenger, each sporting a unique set of specialized tools. They all come with a silicone necklace and a stainless steel clasp, packaged in a neoprene or plastic pouch that can be repurposed for holding your other goodies.

Among the HypeX line is the Pietra, a little metal stick that contains a knife sharpener and a fire-starting flint. The Pietra is joined by the Whug (whistle and tweezers), Wyss (can/bottle opener, hex wrench, wire stripper), Buss (screwdriver set), Ridge (multi-hex wrench, pry, bottle opener, wire stripper), and Corkoran (corkscrew). Prices range from $60 to $100 and they’re expected to launch in June. Additional sport-specific HypeX pendants are being planned for the near future too.

When I first heard about this product, I was terribly confused. Isn’t Gerber the company that produces a bunch of baby food and baby products? Yes, there is a Gerber Products Company, but that’s not the Gerber behind this new Steady multitool. This company is Gerber Legendary Blades, headquartered in Oregon and a subdivision of Fiskar Brands of Finland.

Okay, with that out of the way, we can take a look at the product itself. Gerber has a bunch of different multitools that are similar in scope to a Swiss Army knife, meaning a bunch of tools are shoved into a smallish device. With the Gerber Steady, one of its functions includes a mini tripod for digital cameras. Two legs fold out in the front, the base of the tool acts as the third leg in the minipod, and there’s a tripod screw mount on the top.

Naturally, this won’t do you a heck of a lot of good if you’re trying to steady up your Canon Digital Rebel, but it’s perfectly fine for your PowerShot. I can see quite clearly that at least one of the other tools is a blade of some kind and Gerber is saying that the Steady multitool will have a total of 12 doohickeys in it when it launches next year. Expect the tool to sell for $65.

The Swiss Army knife is iconic, but the modern day urban commando doesn’t have nearly as much use for a corkscrew and serrated blade as we may have once had. Unless we’re camping, of course. We use computers, mostly, so we need adequate memory. That’s where the Victorinox Slim and Slim Duo USB drives flip into the picture.

Originally showcased at CES 2011 earlier this year, these drives clearly mimic the look of a real Swiss Army knife (Victorinox is the company behind that line, after all). As their names imply, the Slim boasts a single USB drive, while the Slim Duo hides two USB sticks under its colorful shell. You can choose from silver, blue, orange, pink, and green.

The entire line is now shipping through retailers and e-tailers like Amazon. The cheapest of the bunch is the 4GB Slim at $39.99 and that ramps all the way up to a hefty 128GB Slim Duo for $349.99. The usual capacities slot somewhere in between with pricing to match.

Have you ever picked up one of those Swiss Army Knife deals, only to learn that it’s missing a tool that you really want to use. Doesn’t it always end up having an extra tool or two that you’re never going to need? The Quirky Switch Pocketknife willto fix that.

It’s a modular pocket knife that you effectively put together yourself. You open up the giant case that comes filled with no fewer than 18 different tool attachments and then you choose which ones you want to include and which ones you don’t.

The kit includes everything you need to build your custom tool, including:

Basic Blade

Serrated Blade

Woodsaw

Bottle Opener/Flathead

Can Opener/Wire Stripper

Scissors

Nail File

Flathead Screwdriver

Phillips-Head Screwdriver

Eyeglass Flathead Screwdriver

Eyeglass Phillips-Head Screwdriver

Magnifying Lens

Corkscrew

Wrench

Pen

Magnet

Tweezers

L.E.D. Flashlight

There are two exterior body covers, two slotted caps, and three interior axle assemblies. The smallest axle can hold between 2 and 6 ools, the medium holds four to ten, and the large holds 7 to 13. It’s up to you how big you want to go and, since it’s modular, you can always change it in the future.

It’s a nifty idea, but I’m not sure how useful it’ll be after you’ve set it up the first time. The $79 asking price might be a bit much too, but it really depends on the quality of the tools.
