There was a time when even the smallest SSD drive could easily fetch you close to a thousand dollars, maybe even more. Do you remember the Motorola Atrix 4G and how it had that laptop dock? You know about the PadFone from Asus that has a slot in the back to take your smartphone? Well, the Exotablet is fundamentally the same idea, except for Apple iDevices.

What you get with the ExoTablet is a device that “instantly converts a smartphone into a full-size, full-power, all-singing, all-dancing very connected tablet.” You simply slide your smartphone into the ExoTablet and you get the big screen experience, all without having to resync your content or use a secondary wireless connection. It’s all powered by your smartphone, not unlike the Asus PadFone. The difference is that it is more flexible, allowing for “any smartphone to be used with any of their planned range of ExoTablets.” Apparently.

To accommodate different shapes, layouts, pin connectors, and so on, they will also introduce the ExoAdapter. Each smartphone model will have its own adapter (costing a dollar or two), making it compatible with the ExoTablet. They’re even planning a range of ExoTablets in different sizes and configurations, including the possibility of built-in SSD storage. The kicker? They say that the new version could be “very possibly for iPhones and iPads” too, working “in the same ExoTablet because they both use the same operating system.”

They’re telling us that a typical ExoTablet will cost in the $150 range and the launch is being planned for October or November of this year.  We’ll wait and see if this is just vaporware or really the next best thing since..

As you can likely gather from its remarkably descriptive name, this portable drive ditches the conventional spinning platter of a 2.5-inch HDD for the faster memory (and lack of moving parts) offered by SSD storage. Going further, it adds on super-fast Thunderbolt connectivity for an even faster experience. That gives you up to 270MB/s, compared to the 80MB/s of FireWire 800 and the 35MB/s of USB 2.0. Since it’s Thunderbolt, it doesn’t require an external power supply either.

Naturally, the added performance comes at an added price. The 120GB and 240GB versions of the Elgato Thunderbolt SSD portable drive will retail for $429.95 and $699.95 when it ships next month.

When it comes to external storage, they have never really had the speed and performance of an internal HDD drive. Now the company “Super Talent” claims that its new product will change the way people think about external storage. The Storage Mod Mini is a portable SSD that uses new USB 3.0 connector and is essentially just a smaller version of the company’s current Storage POD external drive.

As quoted from Super Talent:

Thanks to USB 3.0 and SSD technologies, it is now possible to create a USB storage solution that is smaller, lighter and more rugged than a traditional HDD. A blue anodized, all-aluminum enclosure enables this drive to be both lightweight and rugged. It fits easily in your pocket and requires no power adapter. It’s the perfect traveling companion.

The device is optimized for USB 3.0 but is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0, and works with Windows XP-7 (and presumably Windows 8), as well as Mac OSX 10.4 or later.

Some of you may be on the fence about going down the SSD route. Well, we’ve decided to do a bootup comparison of two nearly identical MacBook Pro models. Both are 2.5Ghz MacBook Pro 15″ with 2GB RAM running a fresh copy of Lion. The difference however, is the one on the left has a 7200RPM 500GB Seagate hard drive with those spinning disc platter things that take forever. And on the right, a freshly loaded 120GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD harddrive. You tell me what you want to live with after watching the video.

The benchmarks on the SSD are phenomenal. Uncached Write speeds were hitting 74.44 MB/sec, Uncached Reads were hitting 17.51 MB/sec. Performance on this was better with larger blocks. You can compare to our xBench score here.

The SSD drive boots in 14 seconds and beats the Seagate even when being powered up after. Everything seems faster too, launching windows, multitasking, tabbed browsing. This is probably the most affordable way to upgrade your computer while actually feeling a big difference. Not to mention, if you’re prone to dropping your notebook, SSDs don’t suffer the same head crashing that traditional platter hard disc drives do.
