iOS Hackers Steve Troughton-Smith and @TheMudKip have been working hard to bring some iOS magic to Apple TV, specifically in bringing iOS Apps to your large screen without the sanctioned support of Apple. So far their progress is very promising, they have managed not only to install iOS Apps on the Apple TV, but also get apps to appear full screen. In the video below, the hack by @TheMudKip showed iOS Apps like Facebook, YouTube & Maps running in 720p fullscreen.

All this is made possible by MobileX, it’s just like a SpringBoard on the iPhone but this one is coded just for Apple TV. It will be from here where you would be able to launch iOS Apps.

@TheMudKip said that he “rewrote SpringBoard from scratch using only QuartzCore.”

Next comes the question of controlling your iOS Apps on the Apple TV. As we all know, iOS is a touch based OS and not a hardware controlled one. In its early stages the hackers used VNC to control the apps, but Steve confirmed that he had cooked up a hack to control the apps via Apple TV’s IR remote control.

“The built-in menu controlled by the remote allows you to quit apps, launch Safari, connect to Wi-Fi, or show multiple apps side by side,” he said. “Audio and video work well too so many games and media apps just work, like YouTube.”

While rumors are around about a secret Apple TV perhaps emerging officially from Apple, we are not sure if and when Apple may reveal their own television, regardless, with this hack it looks like we might be able to taste a bit of iTV a little sooner once MobileX is ready for primetime.

Will this make you get an Apple TV?

Phandroid has leaked pictures apparently showing that Huawei is working on putting Ice Cream Sandwich on their MediaPad (branded at T-Mobile as Springboard, between $180 and $250 on contract, $450 without). This particular tablet didn’t get much attention mostly because being offered through a carrier with too many “value-added” apps and just being routinely overpriced. Nevertheless, this 7-incher has the best pixel density in its class, at 217 DPI which looks gorgeous on its IPS screen. It’s a powerhouse based on Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S3 dual-core chip that runs Android 3.2 smoothly out of box. There’s no question that putting Android 4.0.3 on the MediaPad (then, obviously the T-Mobile Springboard) will bring an even better user experience. There are also rumors that AT&T might have their own re-brand of the MediaPad. Huawei seems to be dedicated to put ICS on their lineup of devices, as it was noticed with the official beta of ICS on the Huawei Honor. All in all, the MediaPad is a nicely built tablet that works perfectly.

It also can shoot smooth HD video:

Kind of a pricey toy, but if you happen to live in the UK, the British MediaPad can go at about $40 subsidized by their carrier. However, that was a claim by Huawei, and there’s no supporting statements from carriers just yet. There are also estimates that if Huawei will decide to go ‘unhinged’ on the US market (that is, without carriers’ support), the retail price of this beautiful 7 inch tablet could be as low as $250.

Because we needed yet another tablet on the market, especially one of the Android variety, T-Mobile has announced the launch of SpringBoard on its network. There’s one catch with this however, the price.

The SpringBoard is marketed as an affordable tablet with premium experience, featuring a 7” HD display, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. The tablet runs on Android 3.2 Honeycomb and can access Blockbuster on Demand, Netflix and T-Mobile TV. There’s a HDMI output so you can view the videos on a bigger screen with your friends as well as a microSD card slot that supports up to 32 GB.

The SpringBoard is supposed to have 4G, which is actually HSPA+ connectivity, and is capable of downloading content as well as playing it. Blio eReader, MobileLife Family Organizer, Slacker Radio and TeleNav GPS Navigator come preloaded with the SpringBoard.

The guys at Wired got a hands on look at the Springboard this week, they seem to have liked it.

I didn’t expect a sub-$200 tablet to feel as substantial as the SpringBoard. It’s got the look of an HTC-made slate, with a sturdy exterior casing and smooth, brushed metal finish. It’s almost as if the HTC Flyer was revamped (or, perhaps, copied). Just like the Fire and the Flyer, It’s a 7-inch tablet, deviating from the norm of 9- and 10-inch competitors. With the modest heft of a trade paperback, and the shape of one to boot, it’s comfortable to carry.

No pricing has been announced yet, but most rumors predict it will be under $200, the tablet will be available in time for the Winter Holidays at T-Mobile retails stores and online.
