Cassette tapes get buried too with Sony boom box

It’s not enough for Sony to kill off the floppy disk today. The Japanese manufacturer is also bidding adieu to another legendary format: the cassette tape. What you see here is the last cassette-playing boom box ever. Well, at least from Sony. In this day and age where most of us don’t even bother with physical media anymore, preferring to download our music digitally, the cassette tape feels decidedly dated.

RIP the floppy disk: Sony finally kills legendary format

I remember when I was able to store just about every document that I ever wanted on a single 1.44MB floppy disk. That was a very long time ago and I don’t know anyone who still uses the format. Well, Sony seems to think so too, because it just killed the floppy disk. Other manufacturers have long since abandoned the file saving format, but Sony stuck around and kept making new disks… until now. This marks the official death of the floppy disk at the ripe old age of 30.

It was the Nintendo’ Wii that proved you do not necessarily need a faster processor and powerful graphics card with glitzy games to have fun. The Wii was just a tad more innovative than the PS3 and XBox 360 with the introduction of the Wii Remote.

Sony has now announced a three dish buffet for it’s motion controller called the PlayStation Move, a standalone Move controller, or a package with the PlayStation Eye + Move + a game, or an entire console. Couch potatoes are warned: gone are the days of button mashing and exercising your wrists and fingers only. Where the PlayStation Move stands apart from the Wii is its fewer buttons and no cable!

Sony to make PlayStation smartphone?

While Sony struggles with sales of its PlayStation Portable, it has decided to get into the smartphone foray. Sony has been at the forefront of interactive electronic technology for the last 15 years, starting with the release of the first Playstation. In a market long dominated by BlackBerries, iPhones, and Androids, Sony could pose a legitimate threat.

A new Sony smartphone could have the ability to play games from Sony’s home and portable consoles by downloading them directly onto the device from Sony’s network.
