What happens to your Facebook and Twitter accounts after you die? The assumption is that your presence in social media will simply fade away, but thanks to services like LivesOn and DeadSocial, that doesn’t have to be the case. It can be far, far creepier.

In the case of LivesOn, which launches next month, the service analyzes what you do online while you’re still alive, using algorithms to effectively create a digital version of you. When you do kick the bucket, your Facebook and Twitter profiles will live on as LivesOn will favorite tweets, share links, and do other social media-ish things on your behalf. In a sense, you get a digital avatar that lives on forever, mimicking the behavior that it recorded while you were still among the living.

If that’s too offensive of a “digital legacy” for you, then DeadSocial might be a little more palatable. Instead of algorithms feeding into your social profiles, you simply pre-write a series of updates and messages that can then be sent out posthumously on Facebook and Twitter. It’s still a little creepy, as you’re sort of writing from beyond the grave, but at least they’re your own words.

Would you use either of these two services? What should happen to your social media presence when you die? Should it simply pass away with you?

What could be worse than a little down time? How about the service being hacked? Today Twitter announced it had detected unusual access patterns and concluded that Twitter had been hacked, though apparently they stopped the attack in its tracks.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t before the hacker(s) managed to have possibly gained access to usernames, passwords, email and session data from as many as 250,000 users.

If Twitter believes you were in any way affected by the attack, you will soon be receiving an email from Twitter that will have you reset your account to a new password. Twitter also reminds its users to use strong password practices for Twitter and all accounts on online for that matter.

Twitter concludes their statement about the attack saying it was “not the work of amateurs” and was ‘extremely sophisticated”.

Bottom-line, you might want to check your email for a notice from Twitter to verify you weren’t affected. While you are at it, change your password to something stronger if you currently feel that what is in place might be easy prey.

We live in a highly social, Internet-connected world. That’s why when major services like Twitter go down, many people take notice instantly– and are often more than a little upset. Especially when such outages have occurred twice in a single month.

Earlier today Twitter when don’t for many users, including those that tried to use Twitter.com or even a 3rd party mobile application. Beyond just Twitter itself, the outage also apparently affected their new “Vine” video sharing service as well.

Twitter posted this status earlier, Some users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.”

Fast-forwarding a bit, most users are finding that Twitter is back up and running, but that’s not the case for everyone. Personally I’m finding that everything is working for me as it should, but many users on the net are still reporting service issues.

What about you, is Twitter back up and running? Additionally, how do you feel about the outage? Is it just to be expected that such a huge service like Twitter will sometimes have these kinds of issues or should they be doing more to ensure that service is continuous without issue?

The social networking world has changed quite a bit since it first emerged. MySpace has come and went, and returned again. Facebook has grown to be the most powerful offering on the market, and now it seems that Google’s relative newcomer Google Plus is now in second place for control over the social market.

The UK market research company Trendstream updated its Global Web index for social networking this week, showing that Google has now moved into second place, with Google’s YouTube taking third, and pushing Twitter down to fourth place.

The new data suggests that Facebook’s active users total 694 million, while Google+ trials behind it in second place with 343 million. That said, Google+ has only been around since the summer of 2011, so with that in mind: that’s a pretty big jump.

Which social networks to you use primarily? When it comes to standard social experiences (a la Google+ and Facebook), what do you currently prefer?

Alongside the Graph Search release just 9 days ago, Facebook put out a beta waiting list. Now, according to The Verge, reports have been coming in that Facebook is rolling out Graph Search to early beta users. We joined the waiting list just a few hours after the big event. However, we are having no luck accessing it.

If you are still unsure about what Graph Search is and what it can do, take a look at the videos on this page. The combination of different search terms and the addition of a social aspect gives Facebook’s Graph Search huge potential. Although this is not going to take over Google anytime soon, it should be a truly remarkable addition to the social network.

Furthermore, we are interested to see how Facebook plans to play out Graph Search on mobile. Hopefully, we will see something like this on our mobile devices before summer. Until then, keep checking Facebook on your computer for the new search features to go live.

Do you think that the addition of Facebook’s Graph Search will change the social network as we now know it? Do you think that Google has anything to worry about? Let us know in the comments below.

The new MySpace was introduced on September 24, 2012, over a year after Justin Timberlake and Specific Media purchased MySpace for $35 million. This was a significant drop in price from when News Corp. bought MySpace for $580 million in 2005.

Nevertheless, soon after the purchase Justin Timberlake said that he was already brainstorming new ideas for MySpace. These ideas included online video game partnerships with Zynga as well as a MySpace TV with Panasonic.

The best idea ironically turned out to be a website. More specifically, a new website, the new MySpace would become Timberlake’s main focus. After a few months of limited access teasers, the new MySpace has officially replaced the old MySpace with a large emphasis on unlimited free music and videos. We are not really sure how MySpace is able to offer unlimited free music, but as long as it stays free and unlimited, we don’t mind not knowing.

Currently, Facebook and Twitter sit atop the social throne and have no intention of giving it up. On the other hand, the “re-makers” of MySpace have opted to allow their users login with Facebook and Twitter. This is a pretty clear indicator that the new MySpace is not out to dethrone, but integrate with current social users.

Have you tried the new MySpace and do you like it? Does MySpace stand a chance against Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and the numerous other existing social networks? Let us know in the comments below.

Remember Myspace? The website that Facebook destroyed over the past few years? Apparently Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook team did not do enough to shut down their old competition. In fact, at the end of September in 2012, Justin Timberlake tweeted (ironic right) a link to a video detailing the “new” Myspace.

The new Myspace website first surfaced last year with a nifty welcoming page. Now, by creating an account or login in with Facebook or Twitter, you can try out the new Myspace. After signing up, you should receive an email soon after.

As far as design goes, the website is by far one of the best I have seen. The font is similar to that of Android’s Roboto, making it easy to read and aesthetically pleasing. As for the website itself, logging in with Facebook should say it all. Myspace is not here to reclaim its spot in social networking.

However, as I write this article, I am still on the new Myspace. The fact of the matter is, if you appreciate a good design and love music, the new Myspace could be for you. Somehow, the site manages to spit out free music of virtually every big artist. In essence, the main feature of the new Myspace is that it has virtually become a free Spotify.

Can you see yourself using Myspace while Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram rule the social industry? Do you see any value in a “new” Myspace? Let us know in the comments below.

We use our smartphones and tablets for a lot of things. We use them to play games. We use them to check the weather. Apparently, above all else, we use our mobile Internet devices to socialize with others. Who said basking in the glow of a small display was antisocial behavior?

A report was recently published by Juice Mobile, a company dedicated to mobile advertising and analytics. In this report, they discovered that 91% of mobile Internet access is to socialize. If you stop to think about it, that doesn’t sound that far-fetched. We go on Facebook and Twitter. We send emails. We post comments on YouTube videos. That’s all socializing.

Juice Mobile also came forward with a bunch of other numbers that may interest you. For example, 60% of Twitter sessions are from a mobile device. Similarly, we’re expecting to see 600 million mobile social networkers around the world by 2013. They’re also saying that mobile commerce will hit $11.6 billion this year and mobile app revenue grew to $12 billion last year. Tablet sales in Canada are expected to double to 2.5 million this year and only 9% of Canadians currently own a tablet device.

And tablets aren’t just for kids either. The average age of a tablet owner is 39. Tech is an expensive hobby, after all.

You may enjoy posting your exact location at any given moment, sharing them with friends, family, and the cloud. What you are doing, where you live or where you work, among others, but one thing you should keep in mind is that this could be seen by everyone, including the people who may be plotting to rob your entire home.

Recent studies show that most burglars these days are depending on social media to find their next targets. In particular, Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook and Google Street View are the most preferred tools by thieves in carrying out their modus.

Some of the former thieves said that an average break-in just takes around ten minutes to accomplish, and only two minutes to enter a household which has no visible security. So if you are planning to brag about your two weeks out-of-town getaway to the Bahamas or to the Caribbean on social networking sites, think again.

To keep yourself and your house from being targeted by these burglars, make sure that your privacy settings are not out there for public consumption.

So the Facebook Phone didn’t necessarily come directly from Zuckerberg himself, but none the less, HTC had took the stage in bringing these two social phones to existence at MWC 2011. These are without a doubt the Facebook phones that were rumored last month and expected to be released at MWC. How are they Facebook phones you ask? Well, they have a dedicated button for Facebook and the HTC Sense UI has “key functions of the Facebook service” integrated within. If you’re one of those people glued to the social networking site 24/7, when you wakeup before even brushing your teeth you’re on Facebook, these are probably the phones for you.

Both run on Android Gingerbread 2.3.3, with European and Asian markets getting it in Q2 2011 and the US later this year.

What HTC says about both these smartphones:

HTC ChaCha
Stay connected with the smartphone for the Facebook generation. The HTC ChaCha smartphone is designed to provide a seamless, social experience by enabling you to stay in touch with your friends anytime, anywhere. The unique tilt design shapes the display and physical QWERTY keyboard so it is easy to view and comfortable to type. Capture special moments in crisp, High-Definition detail or video chat with your friends using the dual cameras, including a 5-megapixel color camera with auto focus and LED flash and a VGA front-facing camera. The ChaCha smartphone also brings the Internet to your fingertips with a 2.6-inch, 480 x 320 resolution landscape touch screen.

HTC Salsa
Your Facebook friends never felt closer. Boasting the same deep Facebook integration as the HTC ChaCha smartphone, the HTC Salsa smartphone provides a fast, high-performance smartphone experience. Capture the moment in high-resolution stills or video with the 5-megapixel camera and immediately share it with friends on the generous 3.4-inch, 480 x 320 resolution touch display. Upload your photos to Facebook at the touch of a button. For face-to-face conversations on the move, the VGA forward-facing camera enables high-quality video calling.
