Remember Myspace? The website that Facebook destroyed over the past few years? Apparently Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook team did not do enough to shut down their old competition. In fact, at the end of September in 2012, Justin Timberlake tweeted (ironic right) a link to a video detailing the “new” Myspace.

The new Myspace website first surfaced last year with a nifty welcoming page. Now, by creating an account or login in with Facebook or Twitter, you can try out the new Myspace. After signing up, you should receive an email soon after.

As far as design goes, the website is by far one of the best I have seen. The font is similar to that of Android’s Roboto, making it easy to read and aesthetically pleasing. As for the website itself, logging in with Facebook should say it all. Myspace is not here to reclaim its spot in social networking.

However, as I write this article, I am still on the new Myspace. The fact of the matter is, if you appreciate a good design and love music, the new Myspace could be for you. Somehow, the site manages to spit out free music of virtually every big artist. In essence, the main feature of the new Myspace is that it has virtually become a free Spotify.

Can you see yourself using Myspace while Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram rule the social industry? Do you see any value in a “new” Myspace? Let us know in the comments below.

While there are certainly GPS systems out there that can give you some real time traffic information, the cars themselves aren’t really communicating with one another. Daimler has been working on a system called Car-to-X, or C2X for short, that effectively lets vehicles exchange information not only with eachother, but also with infrastructure like traffic lights.

Daimler’s been conducting field tests for the C2X system since at least 2006, but they’re about ot embark in the largest ever field trial in the Rhine-Main region of Germany. They’re outfitting at least 120 network-linked vehicles with the technology. With this system, the cars (and thus the drivers) can be alerted of upcoming traffic hazards way ahead of time, allowing them to divert their routes accordingly. Similarly, the system can find the best route to your destination based on real-time traffic data, as well as find the parking lot that appears to have the most available spots.

The communication works in the other direction too. With enough of these cars on the road, the traffic lights can adjust their patterns to improve overall traffic flow. If you have more cars heading in one direction than the other, perhaps they should get more green lights and for longer durations. Of course, it wouldn’t be fair for these specific 120 cars to control traffic patterns, but it does show what could happen if something like this becomes a standard feature.

In fact, the C2X trial is part of the larger Safe Intelligent Mobility – Test Field Germany (simTD) research project. Daimler is a part of it, along with other German automakers, automotive suppliers, communication firms, research institutions and public sector. This most recent trial puts C2X into the real world and out of the safe confines of a closed course. If all goes well, we may soon have more and more cars as part of this automotive “social network.” Of course, we’ll all have to get over our Big Brother concerns first.

Social media may have once been the realm of geeks and nerds, but social networks like Twitter and Facebook are about as mainstream as it gets. What about students? Couldn’t they collaborate on projects and share their interests too? Somehow, Microsoft has decided to enter this foray with a new site called So.cl.

Pronounced “social,” So.cl is “an experimental research project” launched by Microsoft Research’s FUSE Labs. They’re saying that this site is “designed to give students the ability to network with peers, share useful information quickly, and build their own pages that collect information from both inside and outside the classroom.” And give Microsoft a close look at their thinking, actions, and behavior.

So, it’s a site for students to socialize and build a “new way to learn.” That sounds awfully familiar, don’t you think? Oh right, that was almost the exact same foundation on which Facebook was originally built. For students. It’s not like Microsoft is ignoring the elephant in the room, though, since the way you log into So.cl is to connect through your Facebook account.

I’m not entirely sure what’s all that different with So.cl. They say you can “build posts” with photos, video, text, and so on, as well as “find students with similar interests and build communities.” I guess you could say it’s a more academically-geared Facebook, since Zuck’s site has expanded well beyond that niche. In any case, you can check it out at so.cl.

There is no doubt that Steve Jobs had a major impact on multiple different sectors of the technology industry. He played a major role in many different ways from the founding of Apple, to his involvement with Pixar, his glorious return to Apple, and his role in making Apple a household name with such devices as the iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

So it really is no surprise that Sony Pictures grabbed the rights to Walter Isaccson’s recent Steve Jobs biography and is in the beginning stages of planning a movie based on Job’s very accomplished life. No matter what Sony puts together, it’s likely that a movie about Steve Jobs will do very well but, Sony isn’t just aiming to do well, they want the best. The studio recently asked Aaron Sorkin to take charge as the script writer for the new film.

Right now Aaron Sorkin is considering taking the job, but he hasn’t officially made up his mind one way or another. Considering his past writing projects such as Sports Night, West Wing, and the Social Network he certainly seems like a good fit for the role. Beyond his writing experience Sorkin actually knew and was friends with Jobs himself, making him an even better candidate for the job.

Since the film is so early in development, the details are scarce but considering how much Jobs accomplished during his time, there is plenty of good material for making a great film.

I figured it was an inevitability, but I didn’t think it was going to happen so soon. Just as there was a mass exodus from MySpace to Facebook because the latter, at the time, offered a cleaner and less cluttered interface, the same is starting to happen with Google+. Except soon, you’ll be playing games on Google’s social network too.

No, I don’t want to join your Mafia family. No, I’m not interested in your new batch of fresh farm tomatoes. No, I don’t want to play CityVille with you. I don’t want it. And I don’t want it in my Google+… but it’s coming. Set to be dubbed Games Stream, it’s going to add casual games to Google’s social network. Wording on the Google Plus Help pages, which has been removed, referenced games and potentially a separate stream for finding games.

They haven’t quite declared how this is going to work and whether you’ll be able to filter out the gaming noise from your social signal, but you can bet that it’s coming. Despite limited invitations, Google+ has already grown to over 20 million users. The hope is that Google recognizes that these early adopters are mostly techie geeks like me and we don’t want our streams flooded with gaming notifications. I have no issue with the games themselves; I just don’t want every update to be something about getting a new pig on a farm.
