Qualcomm has announced an upcoming partnership with LG involving the use of the Snapdragon S4 quad-core processor. At the moment, LG is keeping quite about its part in the the development, but rumors already have leaked about a phone that more than likely is going to be the fruits of this partnership.

While most of LG’s Optimus line is low-to-mid range quality devices, the Optimus G is a bit of a powerhouse and looks to be LG’s attempts at going after the high-end market in a big way. What all is aboard the Optimus G, if we believe the rumors? Besides a quad-core processor, the phone is said to have 2GB of RAM, a 13MP camera and a 4.7-inch 720p IPS display. The G is also said to utilize 4G LTE technology.

As you can see, it looks to be a monster, especially compared with many of LG’s other devices. LG is know for quality products, but generally has targeted more modest specs on its devices. Could this be the beginning of a bigger shift for the company’s handsets? I personally am quite curious to see how this one turns out, what about you?

The original Motorola Atrix 4G proved to be a rather interesting smartphone, thanks largely to the Lapdock and HD Multimedia Dock accessories, and now it’s getting its official successor. The Motorola Atrix HD has been formally announced, complete with a spec sheet that includes Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. There’s also a speedy 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor in there, which we assume is the same S4 making its way onto a myriad of other devices.

Slated for availability through AT&T, the Motorola Atrix HD features a 4.5-inch HD ColorBoost 720p LCD (330ppi) display, 1780mAh battery, HSPA+, 4G LTE, stereo Bluetooth, 8MP rear-facing autofocus camera, 720p HD front-facing webcam, 1080p HD capture and playback, microSD expansion, and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.

The overall design is still in line with other Motorola smartphones, including the carbon fiber-like backplate and the gently rounded corners. This is the first phone to use Motorola’s new “Circle Widget” on the home screen, giving you quick access to weather, battery, and your AT&T account. Expect to see the Motorola Atrix HD sell for $99.99 on contract when it hits AT&T on July 15.

We can pretty safely assume that Apple is going to unveil the next iPhone this fall, but now anonymous “industry sources” have indicated that the so-called iPhone 5 will be boasting a quad core processor. That’s not too surprising, considering there are already devices like the Galaxy S III with quad core processors, but there’s more to this story.

You may have heard earlier this week that Qualcomm has contracted Samsung to manufacture some of its Snapdragon processors. This is interesting, considering that Qualcomm competes directly against Samsung in the chip industry, even if the North American version of the S III uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor. Well, it looks like Samsung is getting an order from Apple too.

The current rumors say that the upcoming Apple A6 quad core processor will indeed be based on Samsung’s Exynos 4 quad core processor. It’s unclear whether this will be essentially the same chip or if Apple has some “optimizations” for its version of the chip. I guess it’s not terribly surprising, since Apple doesn’t manufacture anything of its own, but with all the lawsuits going back and forth between the companies, it is interesting that they’re signing new contracts to work together.

In related news, another leaked photo has indicated that the iPhone 5 will have a 4-inch Retina display. The touch sensors are integrated on the LCD panel itself, helping to make the new iPhone even thinner.

After months of speculation and hearsay, the Samsung Galaxy S III was officially unveiled to the world earlier today in London, but which carriers are going to get their hands on this latest slab of Super AMOLED deliciousness? After all, Samsung didn’t make any formal indication at the official event.

As far as American carriers are concerned, it looks like at least T-Mobile and Sprint are getting it, but there’s no official mention or word for Verizon or AT&T yet. The Sprint version will likely be equipped with the ability to use the upcoming 4G LTE network, whereas the T-Mobile version could make use of their HSPA+ network instead. It has been postulated that the T-Mobile version will be the only one with a quad-core chip, since the LTE versions would require either an external 4G LTE modem or a non-Samsung dual core chip with LTE (likely the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4).

Given the history, we’re expecting the LTE version to arrive at all of Canada’s big three (Rogers, Bell, and Telus) some time this summer, which should be the same launch window for T-Mobile and Sprint.

In case you missed it, here’s a rundown of some of the key specs and features: 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED 720p display, Android 4.0 ICS, 8MP rear camera, 1.9MP front camera, S Beam, AllShare Play, AllShare Cast, S Voice, burst shot mode, Smart Stay, Social Tag, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, 16/32/64GB storage, microSD expansion (up to 64GB) and a 2100mAh battery.

Not to be confused with that old HTC EVO 4G, the new HTC EVO 4G LTE has been officially announced and unveiled by Dan Hesse and the team at Sprint. Those last three letters make all the difference, as the original HTC EVO 4G only made use of the company’s WiMAX network. And LTE is faster.

They’ve gone big and powerful for this outing, inserting a 4.7-inch 720p Super LCD 2, a dual core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4, 1GB of RAM, Android 4.0 ICS, HTC Sense 4.0 UI, 8MP camera, a discrete camera button, and a signature kickstand on the back (in eye-popping red!) for good measure. For the most part, this phone is quite similar to the HTC One X that we’ve already seen.

Some early impressions appear to be positive, calling this “probably Sprint’s best phone in quite a while.” Performance is mostly snappy, being described as “buttery smooth” for the most part. It is a little “unwieldy” due to its size, but it does have a “remarkably solid feel to it” despite its lighter weight.

Pre-orders begin on May 7 with the price set for $199 on contract when the HTC EVO 4G LTE ships later on in Q2.
