This new version of Skype for Android offers features significant enough to bring it numbering to 2.6.x field from the previous 2.5 versions. The usual roster of features are retained:

– Skype-to-Skype free IMs, video and voice calls over 3G or WiFi;

– Low cost calls and SMSes to mobile phones or landline phones from the Skype on the Android device;

– Sending pictures, videos, and files to any of the Skype contacts;

– Improved voice quality for calls

– improved support for phones with Froyo (Android 2.2).

Below are the features that are either improved, or new, as per Skype’s announcement:

– Easier signing out, and also auto-signing in;

– Improved look (of an app though, and not you, or your correspondent!);

– Voicemail improvements

– Better video quality on Tegra 2 devices.

It is also said that sending videos and photos aren’t the only improvements with Skype 2.6 for Android, as battery life is improved with this version especially for devices running on NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset – where these will include the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Motorola XOOM and Acer Iconia Tablet among others. Not only that, a bunch of other devices that now support video include the HTC Amaze 4G, Motorola DROID 4 and Motorola DROID RAZR, just to keep up with the times. Basically, as long as your device has Android 2.2 Froyo or better, you can always try to give Skype video calling a go.

The upgrade is very fresh on Android Market, but the first response is quite enthusiastic: users note better video call support, auto-login features that save on entering password every time Skype app is started, and some more.

Do you wanna do the Skype thing on your Android smartphone, but they haven't made it available to your handset yet? Today's news should be good, then, since Skype has just extended its Skype 2.1 for Android to the "majority of Android devices." More specifically, they've added no fewer than 17 devices to the list.

Today’s news should be good, then, since Skype has just extended its Skype 2.1 for Android to the “majority of Android devices.” More specifically, they’ve added no fewer than 17 devices to the list.

These include everything from the Acer A5 and HTC Desire HD to the HTC Thunderbolt and Samsung Galaxy Tab. Also included in the list of 17 are such devices as the HTC Flyer, LG Revolution, Samsung Galaxy S II, and Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY. All of these phones and tablets have video chat support too.

You can get the updated Skype 2.1 app for Android either through Android Market or by pointing your mobile browser to Skype.com/m. Even if you’re using Froyo, you should be able to enable video calling by going through the Skype settings in the app itself. The catch is that Froyo folks can only use the back camera, which isn’t nearly as good for video chats unless you’re in the bathroom.

The much-anticipated Skype app has been released for Android platforms today, and it may dissappoint some. Available for free download on the Android Marketplace, Skype’s app allows users to make calls to other Skype accounts, or to make calls over Wi-Fi and 3G depending on your geographic location.

Unfortunately for US users, Wi-Fi is the only wireless protocol supported, but 3G is allowed for international users and should come soon in the US. Skype will allow you to use your Skype credit when dialing traditional numbers, and it wont count towards your wireless plans airtime.

Samsung Galaxy S smartphone users are unable to use the Skype app at this time, login issues prevent users from using the software once it has been successfully installed. Also Android phones with resolutions below 480×320 will not be able to run the app. Video calling is not supported either, but you can always IM.

If you’re interested in giving Skype Mobile for Android a shot just head on over to the Marketplace from your Android device and search “Skype” to download. Let us know if it works for you as we’ve had no luck.
