There is nothing more frustrating than working with both your hands in a tight space, let’s say under a kitchen sink, and find you also need light to really see what the heck you’re doing. Sure, you could have someone hover over you with a flashlight, but more often than not they don’t direct the light just right and it ends up in yours eyes, making things worse not better. That’s exactly where the TEK-LITE comes in, with its hands-free design that fits right on your forearm and has four 8MM LED bulbs, capable of producing over three lumens of light output. This TEK-LITE might not seem that revolutionary, I mean you put it on your wrist basically instead of holding it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a great idea.

Sometimes the simplest concepts prove to be the most useful. The catch? For now this is just another Kickstarter project. For those interested, a pledge of $30 will pre-order you a TEK-LITE and help creator David Prater get ever closer to his goal of $25,000. Is this a revolutionary product that is going to change the world forever? No, probably not, but it is still a neat concept that really could come in handy.

Before smartphones became all the rage, the hip way to access your email and IM your friends was through a Sidekick device. Those days, however, are now numbered. T-Mobile has announced that it’s killing Danger. And no, they’re not referring to the guy who has Danger as his middle name.

If you happen to have a Sidekick that’s running on the Danger operating system, you will only have wireless data access until May 31 of this year. After that, it’s pretty much just a regular messaging phone with a QWERTY keyboard.

Thankfully, T-Mobile is trying to make for a smooth transition:

To ensure the best possible transition for our loyal Sidekick customers, an enhanced Web tool is available on myT-Mobile.com to easily export their personal data, including contacts, photos, calendar, notes, to-do lists, and bookmarks, from the Danger service to a new device, computer, or a designated e-mail account. An application is also available in the Sidekick Catalog to make it easy to export personal data to the Sidekick’s memory card. Many T-Mobile stores can transfer data from that card to a new T-Mobile device if the customer brings in the memory card and Sidekick.

Considering that Danger is a subsidiary of Microsoft now, I’m almost inclined to believe that they’re trying to shift you away from a Danger Sidekick and toward a Windows Phone 7 device… how convenient.

Everybody knows the Sidekick, and we’re going to relaunch the Sidekick and bring it as a 4G device, Android based, into the market.”

These words, spoken by T-Mobile CEO Philipp Humm, confirm previous speculations that the company would re-release the Sidekick. Along with the Galaxy S 4G, which will be a HSPA+ version of the Samsung Vibrant, the phones will be available on T-Mobile’s 4G network at an unspecified date later this year.

T-Mobile has gone grassroots to aid in the design of the newest Sidekick. Catapulting themselves into the user-feedback world of Twitter, they have asked their customers a very big question: “What would you like to see happen with Sidekick? Give us your wish list”.

We were a little surprised to see this coming now since rumours around a new Android-powered Sidekick “Twist” ran rampant earlier this year. The Android connection is an important one because of the prolific Andy Rubin. Beyond being the proud poppa of Android, Rubin co-founded Danger Inc. in a past life which produced the Danger Hiptop. That darned Hiptop was later re-branded as the T-Mobile Sidekick. Given all the parallels and intersections it’s not a stretch to say an Android-powered Sidekick could still be in the works here. And their union would be beautiful.

In the meantime, we definitely encourage current (and potential) Sidekick users to get their Tweets out to T-Mobile. Ignoring the obvious suggestion (make it an iPhone 4), we actually think this is a great idea. Twitter has made all the big companies increasingly self-conscious of what their customers are saying about them; and we can assure you, they’re listening. If consumer-provider relations were high school, then Twitter would be the forum for catty girls who mock your hairstyle, extra-curricular activities, acne and those hand-me-down jeans your mom made you wear. T-Mobile has decided all comments, good and bad, are constructive criticism and plan to make the best darned trendy, acne-free Sidekick ever!

This rumor just gets juicier and juicier by the moment. We’ve started to hear a few rumblings about a so-called “Project Emerald” and with T-Mobile soon to be equipped with quite the attractive new handset. Ever since Microsoft acquired Danger, we assumed that the Sidekick line at T-Mobile was dead. Apparently not. In fact, it seems that Project Emerald could be intimately intertwined with the old popular moniker.

Based on the latest rumors, Project Emerald will resurrect the Sidekick line or, at the very least, become its official successor at T-Mobile. After all, the Microsoft Kin doesn’t look like it’s coming to T-Mo any time soon. But wait. There’s more. The yet unnamed Sidekick-esque device could be manufactured by HTC and powered by Google Android 2.1. We’re also hearing about a Snapdragon processor, front-facing camera, 16GB storage, and 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display.

One source is saying that the new phone will be called a Sidekick Twist, but your guess is as good as ours as to whether this is related to Project Emerald.

A few days ago, we caught our first glimpse of Windows Phone 7 and we assumed it would represent the immediate future of Microsoft-powered smartphones. As it turns out, there could be an alternate path for the Redmond, Washington giant too. Remember Project Pink? Apparently, that’s still a go.

As you may recall, Project Pink is the amalgamation of several efforts, including the acquisition of Danger by Microsoft. Danger was the firm behind the Sidekick OS and it seems that they’re sticking with Sharp for the hardware too. The Pink phones were supposed to use Nvidia Tegra and run a Silverlight-based interface over a Windows CE6 base. Even though there was no explicit mention of the Pink Phone at Mobile World Congress, there is still substantial evidence saying that Microsoft is still very much pursing this project. In fact, there are FCC filings that are being withheld until mere days before the CTIA conference next month.

What this leads us to believe is that Project Pink is being developed in parallel with Windows Phone 7, but will be completely separate from it. Instead, Pink will be using its own Danger-developed OS and could prove to be the second coming of the Sidekick. Microsoft may have lost significant smartphone market share in the last couple of years — you can thank BlackBerry, Android, and iPhone for that — but they’re not going out without a fight. In fact, they could be bringing two new heavyweights into the ring.

Ever since Microsoft decided to acquire Danger, we’ve wondered what they were planning on doing in the cell phone market. Rumors swirled around about some sort of crazy amalgamation that would comebine the Sidekick thing from Danger, Windows Mobile as the OS, and something to do with Zune for media. It was dubbed Microsoft Pink and now we could be seeing the first fruits of that labor.

Nothing official has come out of Redmond just yet, but it seems that the Pink project is starting to get a little more concrete. What you see here are the Motorola Pure and the motorola Turtle. From what we understand, both phones will actually be manufactured by Sharp, the same company that produced (most of) the Sidekick line.

With Project Pink finally bearing some fruit, we see the Motorola Turtle. That’s the phone that looks almost like the Motorola Hint QA10 or Palm Pre, featuring a vertically-sliding QWERTY keyboard and what looks like a square display. The cute rounded lines are clearly targeting a younger audience.

For something marginally more serious, we get the Motorola Pure. This has the QWERTY keyboard that slides out the side to work with a landscape oriented display, similar to what we got with the Sidekick Slide or any number of HTC smartphones.

The rumors are saying that Windows Mobile (maybe WM7) will be at the core of both these units, but Danger will provided some sort of special UI overlay (like HTC’s TouchFLO 3D or Samsung’s TouchWiz) and there could be some inclusion of Zune services, including a dedicated app store.

Nothing’s confirmed for now, but it looks like they’re trucking along with this project.
