Qualcomm and Nvidia aren’t the only ones showing off new processors. Samsung has also announced a powerful chip of its own, the new Exynos 5 Octa, an 8-core SoC for tablets and high-end smartphones.

The Octa consists of 4 high-performance Cortex-A15 cores and 4 Cortex-A7 cores that are optimized more for power efficiency than performance. Still, eight-cores is rather impressive no matter how you slice it.

The big deal with the Octa is that it uses ARM’s big.LITTLE processor switching technology, which means that it uses the high-performance chips when needed, but switches to the battery-saving Cortex-A7 cores when you are doing less strenuous tasks. From the sounds of it, the A15 and A7 cores can also work in concert with one another, which gives you quite a bit of power indeed.

Another change with the Exynos 5 Octa is that it is built on the 28nm manufacturing process, and promises to be more power-efficient than the Exynos 5 Dual, which uses the 32nm process.
