When it comes to tough and tumble devices for use in the field, the Panasonic Toughbook series of laptops has always been the industry leader. They have tough tablets with Windows too, but now Panasonic is added a huge dash of ruggedness to the Android army with the introduction of the Panasonic Toughpad A1 and Toughpad B1.

The new new Toughpads will naturally bring the same kind of ruggedness you’ve come to expect from Panasonic tough products, so go ahead and use it in rain, sleet, mud, dust, sand, or whatever else. This includes operating temps between 14 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit. The core design is very much in like with Toughbooks too and they’ve even included a hand strap on the back to make them easier to hold.

The larger of the two is the Panasonic Toughpad A1. It gets a 10.1-inch display that work with a stylus. Power comes by way of Android 3.2 Honeycomb and a Marvell 1.2GHz dual core processor, along with 1GB of RAM, 16GB storage, microSD expansion, a “serviceable” battery, and the option of adding LTE or WiMAX. Security goes further with software encryption, dual-factor authenticatoin, and other “business-oriented safeguards.” They mention a Business AppPortal cloud-based storefront too.

The Panasonic Toughpad B1 looks to be much the same device, except with a 7-inch display in place of the 10-incher. We imagine the specs are going to be very similar, if not identical.

The Motion CL900 is being touted as the first “ultra-light, rugged Tablet PC”. We’re not sure if this means it comes equipped with 4-wheel drive or a winch but Motion is definitely trying to define their market niche.

Passing the four foot drop test, weighing in at just over 2 pounds and equipped with an exterior that apparently protects from moisture and dust, Motion wants their tablet to be the one that will dominate field and construction sites.

The tablet runs Windows 7 which makes it an easy fit for business integration and is powered by the upcoming “Oak Trail” Intel Atom processor so processing speed should be 1.5Ghz. The tablet comes equipped with either a 30GB or 62GB SSD and up to 2GB of RAM which should be sufficient for most enterprise users at $1000 each.

The 10.1” screen is both touch and stylus input which is nice and it’s equipped with front and rear-facing cameras which is the new norm and a perk for those into videoconferencing. It’s also got a Corning Gorila Glass display which apparently offers greater durability and scratch resistance and DuPont Vertak which should offer better visibility in various lighting conditions.

Added mobility perk is that it’s got Wi-Fi, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and optional WWAN mobile broadband (Gobi 3000 with GPS) to keep you connected.

Motion seems to think the 8-hour battery life is sufficient but we’re a bit concerned that’s on the low side for a product being marketed for field use.

Motion is staked out at CES in the Hilton Las Vegas, Suite #377 so if you’re in the market for the “rugged” tablet swing by and let us know your thoughts.
