On a purely official basis, the only device that supposed to have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is the newly announced Nexus 7 tablet, but it looks like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone can get some Jelly Bean action too.

This isn’t an official release from Google, but RootzWiki went ahead and made the Jelly Bean preview update available to the masses right after the Google I/O event. This update was originally intended for the GSM versions of the Galaxy Nexus, but it has been adapted to work with the LTE models too. This means that all Galaxy Nexus models are eligible for the Android 4.1 upgrade.

At this point, absolutely no bugs have been found and the ROM appears to be 100% functional. Of course, if you want to load up this somewhat unofficial version of Jelly Bean on your Galaxy Nexus, you will need to have root access. That said, if you want Google Now, offline voice dictation, and Project Butter speed, this is the only way you’ll get it at the moment.

You can get the “reverse engineered preview build” of Jelly Bean for your VZW Galaxy Nexus on Rootzwiki. Of course, proceed at your own risk.

It was expected sooner than later, but now it’s become reality. By hard work and determination of Android Police’s own in-house hacker named (appropriately) Justin Case and helpers like Vashypooh, Trevor Eckhart, and IOMoster of TeamWin, the rooting of Amazon’s Kindle Fire has become possible once again. This is after Amazon’s firmware upgrade to version 6.2.1 killed root privileges. In an exclusive post to Android Police, restoring the root on Kindle Fire looks like this:

Download jcase’s Kindle Fire root app.

Run the root app and click “Root.”

On your PC, in a command prompt, type “adb root.”

Download Superuser.

Unzip Superuser.

In the command prompt, type:

adb remount
adb push su /system/xbin/su
adb shell chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su
adb shell chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su
adb install com.noshufou.android.su-1.apk
adb reboot

Sure, it might take an app called SuperOneClick to un-root your Fire first, but according to first happy customers the procedure works fine if the instructions are followed closely and with an understanding of what each command does. So far, users need to know how to use ADB debug mode to clean your Fire from previous rooting attempts, if there were any. Then, the TWRP recovery utility might be much help pre-installed, to be on the safe side when some mistakes, mistypes, or otherwise bungled permissions would result in boot loops, or other sorts of soft-bricking your Kindle Fire.

Good discussions of this procedure helped by Justin Case himself can be found at rootzwiki. The next firmware silent “upgrade” via OTA may break this root again, but for those Fire users who would decide to take path to CyanogenMod 7 and Ice Cream Sandwich from here there will be no more sneaky upgrades from Amazon. The rooting procedure has got the name BurritoRoot, the implications of which we described earlier.

Thanks to a fire sale on the HP TouchPad from pretty much every major retailer, someone went home with a special TouchPad – it’s running Android 2.2. There are currently two YouTube videos posted of the unique tablet, and the device flashes a Qualcomm Innovation Center (Quic) logo so it looks like it was a development project that accidentally mixed up with the fire sale models.

The buyer decided to sell it on eBay, and at the time of this post the current bid was $1,275. HacknMod is also offering a reward of $2,225 as of this posting for a successful port of Android to the TouchPad.

However, more than one person has received a special Android-running TouchPad. Shahzeb Jiwani has also come into possession of an HP TouchPad running Android 2.2… and to the delight of developers and the Android community, he’s decided to make a ROM <del>dump</del> available on RootzWiki, so everyone who owns one of the $99 tablets can run Android on their tablet.

The files are available for download and the port of Android 2.2, 2.3, and maybe even 3.0 Honeycomb will get a little head start.

Check out Jiwani’s TouchPad running Android in his own video.
