Remember Johnny 5? iRobot’s latest military/police robot reminds us of the classic 1986 film Short Circuit. Johnny 5 is alive!

The heavy weight 710 warrior is just like its predecessors, just more versatile. It’s more capable of performing a wide range of missions including EOD (explosive ordnance disposal), reconnaissance and surveillance.

The 347 lb. (157 kg) iRobot Warrior 710 is a fast, heavy weightlifter, literally. Capable of lifting 220 lbs (100 kg) and rolling along at 8 mph, it can also haul a payload of more than 150 pounds (68 kg) over the roughest of terrain. Of course, you can outfit it with APOBS (Anti-Personnel Obstacle Breaching System) and various weapons. Its manipulator arm, that can extend 75-in (192 cm), is dexterous enough to open a car door (see video on page).

The robot can be controlled using an Operator Control Unit powered by iRobot’s Aware 2 intelligence software, which can be integrated with optional obstacle sensors, compass and GPS. The operator can see the proceedings through multiple cameras on the 710 in real time at a distance of up to 800 meters.

It was field tested by iRobot in the most hostile of terrains when two prototypes were used to explore the radiation contaminated site at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. They were used to make radiation-contaminated rooms safe for humans with a vacuum cleaner taped to the robot’s arm to suck up radioactive dust, according to Tim Trainer, iRobot’s vice president of operations for government and industrial robots.

Although you’ll never be able to own the iRobot 710 Warrior unless you are government or military, you can look forward to the next Short Circuit movie coming soon.

When the original Roomba from iRobot first hit the scene it was revolutionary: a vacuum that roamed (and cleaned) your room on its own. iRobot has quite the track record making military robots, so why not infiltrate the home front? LG also has quite the experience with military production, so it comes as no surprise that LG’s new HOM-BOT does what an iRobot does, but smarter.

Unveiled for the first time at their CES press conference, the LG HOM-BOT is a network-connected Wi-Fi robotic vacuum cleaner. Instead of randomly going around your living room in a haphazard way, the HOM-BOT actually knows where it’s been in your home and where it needs to go. You can even look at its cleaning path overlaid on your home’s floor plan via any web browser.

That’s a real game changer. I can’t say how well it cleans compared to the iRobot, and how you would go about programming your house plan into the Roomba’s memory (possibly by web gui), but the concept is quite intriguing. There’s even a webcam mounted on the front to show you a live video feed from your HOM-BOT’s perspective via the web.

The LG HOM-BOT is part of a bigger strategy to make everything “smarter.” LG is showing off smart ovens, smart fridges, smart TVs, and… well, smartphones too. That Tegra2-powered Optimus 2X looks pretty darn nice.

11 years ago, iRobot Corp. redefined the human potential for laziness with the robotic vacuum. Now they’re ready to unveil the next generation of home-cleaning robots with an update to their popular Roomba intelligent vacuum, as well as an all-new Scooba floor cleaning version.

Announced at CES, the Scooba 230 is designed for cleaning bathroom floors such as tile, lino and sealed hardwood. At 3.5″ tall and 6.5″ in diameter, the robot can fit around toilets and furniture and under vanities. Using a three-stage cleaning system, it washes, scrubs and squeegees floors – and holds enough cleaning solution to scrub up to 150 square feet.

What’s really bizarre is that the tank of clean water actually shrinks as the robot cleans, making room inside for the dirty water to fill. Dirty water never has to be reused during a cleaning cycle.

Both new robots will use iAdapt Responsive Cleaning Technology, which monitors the environment 64 times per second and adjusts the robots behaviour to suit. With emphasis on thorough coverage, under and around furniture and multiple passes over the areas that need it most, the robots are programmed with dozens of behaviors to ensure the entire floor is thoroughly cleaned.

That’s the type of ingenuity you would expect from iRobot, which also builds robots that carry out such tasks as bomb disposal and route clearance for the military, SWAT and hazmat. But is it really as worth-while?

iRobot Expands Popular Home Robot Line with the World’s Most Compact Floor Washing Robot and the Next Generation Roomba

With iAdapt Technology and Innovative Design, iRobot has Every Room of the House Covered

2011 International CES
BEDFORD, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–iRobot Corp. (NASDAQ: IRBT), a leader in delivering robotic technology-based solutions, today announced two new home robots to do your dirty work: the iRobot Scooba® 230 – a floor washing robot small enough to clean in tight spaces and around bathroom fixtures – and the iRobot Roomba® 700 Series, the smartest and most effective Roomba vacuum cleaning robots to date. Both will be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 6.

“These new robots represent our ongoing commitment to developing innovative products that make a difference in people’s lives”
iRobot Scooba 230 and iRobot Roomba 700 Series use iAdapt™ Responsive Cleaning Technology, the most intuitive, flexible and effective way to clean your floors. This system of software and sensors monitors the environment 64 times per second, using dozens of behaviors to ensure the entire floor is thoroughly cleaned. The dirt-centric technology ensures thorough coverage, including under and around furniture, and multiple passes over the areas that need it most.

“These new robots represent our ongoing commitment to developing innovative products that make a difference in people’s lives,” said Jeff Beck, president of iRobot’s Home Robots division. “While Roomba is already the world’s best-selling vacuum cleaning robot, we continue to make improvements to ensure it is the best on the market and stays at the head of the pack. With the compact Scooba 230, we focused on reducing size without compromising effectiveness and navigability. The launch of Scooba 230 has effectively made one of people’s least favorite household chores, cleaning the bathroom, a whole lot easier.”

Small but Mighty

Scooba 230 is a powerful and compact cleaning machine. At 3.5 inches tall and 6.5 inches in diameter, the robot easily cleans in tight spaces, including under and around furniture and bathroom fixtures. The robot’s three-stage cleaning system washes, scrubs and squeegees floors, neutralizing up to 97 percent of common household bacteria*. Scooba 230 holds enough cleaning solution to scrub up to 150 square feet of linoleum, tile or sealed hardwood floors in a single cleaning session.

Unlike with a mop and bucket, Scooba only uses clean solution to wash your floors, never dirty water. Scooba 230’s water management system includes an active reservoir that keeps the cleaning solution and dirty water separate inside the robot. While the robot is cleaning, the active reservoir shrinks in size as cleaning solution is put down on the floor, freeing up space in the robot to hold the dirty water that is picked up. Scooba doesn’t move dirt (or dirty water) around – it gets rid of it.

Scooba uses a series of lights and chimes to let you know it has successfully finished cleaning. The bottom plate of the robot snaps on and off without tools, making it fast and easy to rinse the scrubbing brushes and the squeegee after each use.

Virtual Wall® technology creates an invisible beam that the robot won’t cross, keeping Scooba 230 in the rooms you want to clean and out of the ones you don’t. Cliff sensors ensure the robot automatically avoids stairs and drop-offs while cleaning.

The World’s Best-Selling Vacuum Cleaning Robot Just Got Even Better

The award-winning Roomba vacuum cleaning robot has been revolutionizing the way people clean their homes since 2002, and iRobot has sold more than five million home robots worldwide. The sixth-generation iRobot Roomba 700 Series includes the same state-of-the-art features that Roomba users have come to know and introduces new innovations that make the robot more effective and easier to use. The newest Roomba robots include an updated and improved three-part cleaning system along with several new features and upgrades:

Advanced cleaning head improves overall cleaning from previous models, including 20 percent better pickup of fine particulates.
New AeroVac™ Series 2 bin with a powerful vacuum maximizes air flow through Roomba’s cleaning head to pull more hair and debris off the brushes and into the bin.
Two HEPA-type air filters keep fine household dust from re-circulating in your home.
Dirt Detect Series 2 (available on Roomba 770 and 780) uses an acoustic sensor to detect excessive amounts of small and hard debris, such as sand, and an optical sensor to detect larger and soft debris, such as popcorn. Dirt Detect Series 1, which uses the acoustic sensor, is available on the Roomba 760.
With a Persistent Pass Cleaning Pattern, Roomba uses a brush-like, back-and-forth motion to focus its cleaning when it finds an excessively dirty area.
New power management software results in 50 percent longer battery life than previous Roomba generations, ensuring hundreds of cleaning cycles with proper use.
Soft-touch bumper with a new polymer coating protects walls and furniture.
Full Bin Indicator light turns on when Roomba detects a full dust bin (available on Roomba 770 and 780).
Touchpad interface provides state-of-the-art control using just your fingertips and eliminates buttons (available on Roomba 780).
Scooba 230 plus Essentials Kit and Roomba 700 Series will be available in spring 2011 at www.irobot.com.

* When used as directed, laboratory testing results indicate removal of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria after two passes of the Scooba floor washing robot. Individual results may vary.

Slap a pair of Roomba’s on a pane of glass, with a slight variation in cleaning utensils, and you’ve got the Windoro. It almost sounds like a spanish sword-fighting nobleman here to clean our windows. But its a blue window clinging robot that simultaneously cleans both sides of the glass. Trapped in alignment with neodymium super magnets, the little window sucker can stick on up to 0.98-inches (25mm) of the tempered stuff.

The manufacturer is Pohang Institute of Intelligent Robotics (PIRO, South Korea), the price is $260,000. Thanks, but I think i’ll stick to a squeegee for now.
