In today’s world, retro is cool. This is especially true when it comes to DIY projects. We’ve seen devices over the years that allow you to use original controllers from game systems on modern devices, mobile game players using cartridges and so much more.

Now one DIY enthusiast has decided to pay tribute to one of the greatest gaming systems of all time, the SNES. In the video below the YouTube user liberty5 takes apart an SNES controller and transforms it into a unique set of headphones that are sure to stand out in the crowd.

Pretty cool idea, though it would be even better if the D-Pad and buttons actually did something other than were there solely for aesthetics. What do you think, is this a project you’d be interested in trying out for yourself or not?

Duck Hunt was the game which came bundled with my NES and I have pretty fond memories of the 8-bit arcade shooter, so news of Duck Retro Hunt’s release on Android has kicked my day off in retro style.

As you would expect from a modern game, this Duck Hunt clone has a few up to date twists to improve and build upon the original’s game play. Aiming is handled either by onscreen controls or via your phone’s built in gyroscope, and a new AR mode has been added to.

This might not be the first or last Duck Hunt clone out there, but is looking to be one of the best implemented clones. Duck Retro Hunt is available on iOS and Android with both free and paid versions up for download.

Perhaps you are going over to grandma’s house for Christmas dinner this holiday season and you’re going to once again be fascinated by her old rotary telephone. With the move to digital and touchscreens, we’ve lost that retro appeal in our homes, but that doesn’t have to be the case. The Pyle Retro Home Telephone Collection is a unique smartphone dock that reminds us of days gone by.

There are four models in the range and they are all handcrafted from real wood, featuring real brushed copper parts. They work with your regular landline, but the kicker is that they are also compatible with your iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, iPad, and other mobile devices, including tablets and even MacBooks. All you need is a standard 3.5mm connection.

Some of these retro home telephones, like the $89.99 PRT15I, look just like a classic rotary phone, whereas the $109.99 PRT35I comes with a built-in iPhone charging dock, in addition to the rotary dial and classic handset. Standard features include last number redial, ringer high/low selectoin, and one-button pick-up.

Check out the full press release below or head over to PyleAudio.com for more information. Prices range from $89.99 to $109.99 MSRP.

There is just something classic and beautiful about the retro-inspired Fuji X100. And it’s even better when you can grab this fantastic camera for an impressive $300 off the regular price.

Remember, the Fujifilm X100 comes as a limited edition kit with each package coming with a special message card indicating that you have one of only 10,000 units produced. The kit itself includes the 12.3MP APC-C CMOS EXR Fujifilm X100 digital camera itself, as well as a genuine leather case, a lens hood, an adapter ring and a protective filter. This is not an interchangeable lens camera, so you are stuck with the fixed 23mm Fujinon lens with a widest aperture of F/2.0. The built-in ND filter can be turned on or off, giving you an equivalent f-stop reduction of three.

In addition to the retro-inspired styling, one of the other unique features is the hybrid viewfinder. This gives you a “bright frame” optical viewfinder, which would be closer to the classic cameras of old (and current DSLRs), but there’s also the electronic viewfinder system. And yes, it can shoot 720p HD movies too.

Pick up the Fujifilm X100 for $1,399.95 on Amazon.com, including free super saver shipping.

Yes, we already know about the iCade and Ouya, but what about the nostalgic value of curling up with your favorite NES title from the 80s? The newest creation is called the GameDock and it effectively lets you convert your iPhone, iPad or iPad touch into a retro video game console, complete with two player support and HDTV output.

The dock itself looks relatively simple with a place to dock your device. In the front, there are two USB ports that can easily accept modified NES-style controllers for two players. And then around the back is the HDMI output to connect to your HDTV. The developers took advantage of the pre-existing Bluetooth input standard from the Ion Audio iCade, since it already provides support for over 100 iOS games.

You can check out the Kickstarter page for more information and to pledge your cash. The $100 early bird is sold out, but if you pledge at least $125, they’ll send you a ready-to-play GameDock complete with the two retro USB controllers and an HDMI adapter. Bump that up to $150 and you’ll get “a bundle of games” too. They’ve set a funding goal of $50,000 and with 27 days to go, they’re already up over $40,000 in pledges.

The more we look ahead to the future of technology, the more it seems we like to look back at past innovations with an utter sense of nostalgia. If you’re starting to feel the same way about your iPhone, then you may want to have a look at the iRetroPhone dock.

Available from USB Fever for $99.99, it’s a docking station for your iPhone that’s meant to mimic the experience you may have once had with an old rotary dial landline telephone. I remember having one of these at my grandma’s place, listening to that dial click-clack its way back with number entered. The iPhone gets an accompanying app to simulate that experience.

As for the dock itself, it will keep your iPhone charged and it can connect via the 3.5mm headset jack so that you can use the provided handset to complete the retro experience. I’d say that $100 is a little on the pricey side, given that you can probably pick up an old rotary phone from the thrift store for a few bucks, but there’s just something a little more hipster about having your rotary phone as an iPhone dock.

There's a price to be paid when you want to do the antique thing, even if it's not really an antique at all. There’s a price to be paid when you want to do the antique thing, even if it’s not really an antique at all. What you see here is the iVictrola, a modern day interpretation of the original Victrola record players. The key difference, of course, is that it doesn’t play vinyl; instead, it plays music from your iPad.

The dock has an antique Magnavox phonograph horn, though I’m not sure if this really is recovered from an older product or it’s a brand new creation made to look older. In any case, the horn latches onto a block of wood and on that same block of wood is a slot for your iPad. It’s not even an electronic amplifier, since it effectively functions as a giant megaphone.

The good news, then, is that it won’t need to use any source of electricity to work. The bad news is that it may not work quite as well as a conventional speaker. It also doesn’t help that the iVictrola carries a suggested retail price of $985. Ouch. In any case, it’ll be produced in limited numbers for sale this November.

Sure, it’s fun with all this new technology around us, but don’t you miss the old days of Nintendo? Well, for those of you who want to mix the new and the old, and also combine protection and nostalgia, Lootiful is working on the perfect solution: a retro case for your iPad 2 that looks like the classic Gameboy handheld.

All the old school gamers out there, this is for you. The iPad 2 Game Boy Case snaps on the back of your tablet to protect the iPad while looking like a classic Nintendo game.

The front of the iPad is uncovered, so you can still access your tablet without the need of removing the case, so while you’re doing the computing on your iPad, people around you could think you’re actually holding a Nintendo system. The case has a lay-on-table design, so that the surface of the touchscreen doesn’t scratch when facedown and it also features cutouts, for you to easily access the peripheral buttons and ports.

Time travel with your tablet and shock your friends. The only problem is, so far there is no info on neither availability nor price of the retro beauty. It’s “coming soon“, so if you really want one, watch out for it. The company made 1500 iPhone 4 cases and now they are “sold out forever.”

A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, there was a time when kids would leave their homes if they wanted to play video games. They would gather at gaming cafes, then called “arcades,” to drop coins into the large wooden boxes that housed individual games such as Ms. Pacman, Street Fighter or Frogger. Yes, we hope you remember this time, because we sure do and miss it too.

Ion has moved to bring back the “arcade” concept with their iCade iPad dock. The box turns your iPad into a miniature version of the gaming cabinets of old. And though it won’t get you out of the house or put you into any sort of social situations, the dock’s Bluetooth joystick kit will still give you that nostalgic arcade feeling while playing your retro games.

The only complaint I have is that it only allows your iPad to sit in the portrait position rather than giving the option for either orientation. But I’m sure Atari and others will be taking this into consideration when developing games to play through the iCade.

And if you can’t find the game you’re looking for in Atari’s library, Ion says new and existing apps can be “easily updated to work with iCade.”

Ion plans to release the dock in late spring this year for about $100.
