The world of technology continues to evolve at an impressively fast paced, and the same is equally true when it comes to gaming tech. While we live in a world of life-like visuals, sometimes you just want to kick tter and an enjoy a classic game or two.

There are many ways to go about this. You can download emulators for your computer or mobile device, you can even own and maintain the original classic game hardware. Or you can enjoy those original cartridges on your TV using a modernized game player. That’s where the Hyperkin RetroN 5 gaming console comes in.

This unique system could be perfect if you have a collection of cartridges laying around but the system hardware no longer seems to work like it should. Additionally you could just want to reduce clutter by having one system that can do it all.

The RetroN 5 is capable of playing NES, SNES Genesis, Japanese Nintendo Famicom, Gameboy Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Color cartridges all on the same system. Even cooler, it has HDMI for upscaling to 720p, or an AV port for those with older televisions. The package will also include two modern gaming controllers that use Bluetooth wireless technology.

The positive-side to this device is that you get one system that plays all your older favorites on a modern TV. The downside is that you don’t get the original controller look/feel. Still at a price that is expected to be under $100, this could be perfect for a retro gamer.

It’s really hard to become fully immersed into the retro gaming experience when using an iPad or Android tablet. Sure, the games look similar to how we remember them. The sound is top notch, too. The only problem is that touch just doesn’t give you that same nostalgic feeling.

The good news is that there are many great controllers to choose from that can enhance the retro experience and even take it to new heights. One such controller is the new iCade 8-Bitty, which is directly inspired by the design and shape of the old-school Nintendo NES control.

The 8-Bitty was announced at the beginning of 2012, but has been a no show- until now. The new control is shipping and can be bought for $30 from the ThinkGeek website. The control uses Bluetooth to make the connect and should work with most Android devices, the iPad and iPhone. It is worth noting that many similar controllers seem to start at around $50, so the value here is actually very good.

Whether playing Atari classics or using an emulator to check out your favorite older games, this is one of the best ways to make the experience feel like the real deal. Check out the ThinkGeek website for more details.

Yes, you can play select SNK and NEO GEO titles through the Wii’s Virtual Console or Xbox Live Arcade, but this is the real deal. Here is the NEOGEO X GOLD, a complete solution for both mobile and home-based gaming. Some people will say that this is “shockingly expensive at $200,” but you have to remember what you’re getting as part of this package. There is the NEOGEO X Handheld, which is almost like a squared off PSP with a 4.3-inch display, but you also get the NEOGEO X Station to connect to a TV via HDMI or A/V out, as well as the NEOGEO X Joystick.

If you consider that a quality arcade stick for the PS3 or Xbox 360 can easily run you $200 on its own, this is a pretty decent value. Of course, the joystick only works with the NEOGEO X, but the kicker is that it comes pre-installed with 20 classic NEOGEO titles. I’m particularly happy to see King of the Monsters and World Heroes Perfect, as well as Baseball Stars II, Fatal Fury, King of Fighters ’95, Magician Lord, and Samurai Shodown II, among others. This is my childhood! Aside from Street Fighter, I grew up playing as a Godzilla-like beast in King of Monsters and following the adventures of Terry Bogard and crew in the KoF series.

There’s no specific mention of what else could be coming down the pipeline, but they do say that there is an expandable game slot in there too. Hopefully a few more Metal Slugs make their way over. In any case, you can celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original NeoGeo by buying the NeoGeo X Gold starting on December 6 for $199.99. That sure beats spending $650 on the original AES and then thousands on the original titles, but that’s just for the collecting purists out there.
