The Atari Jaguar, which was originally launched back in 1993, was a commercial failure. But it has definitely become a favorite for many hackers and modders out there. User Evil Nod over at Bacteria Forums has created his own portable version of the console and it looks quite impressive.

If you haven’t been living under a rock until now you might know that this new product is not the first of its kind. Ben Heckendorn took this route once in 2006 to create his portable version.

Now, Evil Nod has used the PS1 display to create a compact console which is about 1.75-inches thick. It’s definitely a bit bulky when compared to Heck’s build, but Evil Nod has managed to create a product which does not need a giant battery or a cartridge slot at the back. He has kept everything inside a textured black shell.

He has not released any details regarding battery life or weight which are factors that can make or break a portable system. But he has documented the entire production process extensively. Check it out here.

The video shows a game running smoothly on the system.

When the PS3 first hit the scene, one of the cooler features was being able to run Linux on it. Sony killed that with the release of the PS3 Slim in 2009, thanks to fears of piracy, but it also killed 13 years of love for homebrew. Yes, Sony once officially supported and endorsed the homebrew community.

Let’s go all the way back to 1997 and the original PlayStation. Sony released something called Net Yaroze. This package contained a matte black PS1, a couple of controllers, software, and professional documentation. In short, it was a “full” homebrew development kit for the avid hobbyist.

There were limitations on the size of the games, but it demonstrated that Sony was interested in allowing regular folks make their own games. This continued with Linux for PlayStation 2 (complete with size restrictions), but again, it demonstrated Sony’s dedication to endorsing homebrew.

And then the hackers kinda ruined the party for everyone, Sony got scared, and here we are today. It’s a shame, really, but I guess they’re trying to push these enthusiasts to develop games for PSN instead… though that’s an entirely different beast altogether.

I don’t care (for now) that the rumors are pointing toward the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play moniker for this device. In my eyes, it’s still the Sony PlayStation Phone, because that’s really what it is. And now we finally get to see the PSPhone perform some of its PlayStation functionality.

We’re seeing an increasingly large number of leaked photos, but a video demo is so much better. A video has now been posted on the Internet, showing the PlayStation Phone XPERIA Play running Biohazard 2 (known as Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 on our shores) and Rage Racer (which is a part of the Ridge Racer series from Namco). These are classic PS1 titles.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that I’m thinking this gameplay preview is anything but official. Instead of using something that looks like official Sony software, the demo makes use of an app called ROM Buddy. The emulator then proceeds to find and launch BIN titles for the mobile gaming enjoyment. I’d imagine that when this becomes official that the PlayStation Network would be extended to support it.

Considering the powerful graphics and gameplay capabilities of regular Android (and iOS) phones these days, will a true “PlayStation Phone” really stick out from the crowd anymore? I guess having real game controls will help.
