You may have heard that current Windows Phone 7 devices are not be eligible for an upgrade to Windows Phone 8. This probably makes it harder to move current stock, something had to be done. In the case of AT&T, they’ve decided to cut the price of the Windows Phone 7-powered Nokia Lumia 900 down to a mere $50. That’s really cheap, considering the hardware that you’re packing, like the 1.4GHz processor and the 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display.

Of course, that $50 price isn’t for an outright purchase. You will have to sign up for a qualifying contract. That said, at least you’ll be getting upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8, complete with the updated Start screen. Tiles can get resized, for instance, but it is going to bug you this fall when the first batch of Windows Phone 8 devices start hitting shelves.

What do you think? Is the price slash enough to make the Nokia Lumia 900 enticing for folks considering a new smartphone? Or are they still more inclined to get a new Android device or iPhone? Does the pink version persuade or dissuade you?

The Amazon Kindle Fire did quite well for itself during the holiday shopping season, shipping about 4.8 million units during that period. Now, sales have slowed and Amazon has responded by slashing the price on its Android-powered tablet e-reader.

Shipments for the first quarter of 2012 slipped all the way down to just 700,000 units, which is a mere fraction of what Amazon enjoyed during Q4 of last year. Naturally, a big part of this has to do with holiday gift buying, but Amazon still wants to sell as many of these puppies as it can. And that’s why several Amazon local deals are popping up with $30 off coupons, bringing the price of the Kindle Fire down to just $169.

Of course, Amazon isn’t really out to make money from the hardware; they’re in the business of selling you content for that e-reading tablet. So, should Amazon need to compete with a $199 Google Nexus 7 tablet, I wouldn’t be surprised if the online e-tailer giant decided to slash prices even further. My fingers are crossed for a $99 Kindle Fire, but I think a $149 semi-permanent price point could prove likely.

The HP TouchPad fire sale created quite the fervor and it looks like we’re ready for another wave of impulse tablet buying. Several retailers have officially cut the price of the BlackBerry PlayBook by $300. What this means is that you can now go out and buy the 16GB RIM tablet for just $199. That’s assuming that you find one in stock.

The sale will apparently begin at Staples starting on Nomember 18th and the sale will run until December 1. If you want to spend more, the 32GB and 64GB model are receiving the same $300 cut, bringing them down to $299 and $399, respectively. But Staples isn’t the only place participating.

It turns out that the same deal is being offered by Best Buy and Future Shop in Canada too, as well as what appears to be Wal-Mart. I suppose part of the motivation is to clear out stock for the holidays, but the PlayBook could represent a much better buy than the TouchPad. Even though RIM is hurting, it’s unlikely they will discontinue QNX any time soon, so the PlayBook will still get plenty of support. RIM might be crazy enough to release a PlayBook 2 for all we know. Sales of the current PlayBook have been lacking, but I have a feeling they’re going to be sold out everywhere well before the weekend is out.

Yes! The great thing about competition is that all the different companies are fighting for your hard earned money. In the increasingly crowded markets for tablets, HP is apparently having some trouble getting enough attention, so they’ve dropped the price on the TouchPad down a solid one hundred dollars. Cheaper is good, right?

The entry-level HP TouchPad can now be had for just $399, rather than the $499 price point that it had at time of launch. This gets you the 16GB model. If you want 32GB, you’ll need to toss in an extra $100. In terms of price, this puts the TouchPad ahead of the Motorola Xoom, Galaxy Tab 10.1, and iPad, but just on par with the Asus Eee Pad Transformer (sans keyboard dock).

Remember that Acer also cut the price on its entry-level Iconia Tab down to $395 earlier this month, so it seems that the sub-$400 range is the current sweet spot. That’s cheaper than most of the newer (unlocked and unsubsidized) smartphones out there. I know there are a few options in the $299 range, but until these big players get down there, I’m thinking $399 is where it’s at for the next little while.

There’s no denying that the Nintendo 3DS is one innovative piece of gaming hardware. Glasses-free 3D for the masses? That’s pretty cool. Unfortunately, at $250, it was just too expensive. Nintendo has now recognized that and they’re cutting the MSRP down to a more affordable $169.99. That’s better, but is it good enough?

The new price is set to take effect on August 12, but where does that leave the people who already bought the system? They’ll feel ripped off, right? Maybe not. Nintendo is offering 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop, so long as they log into the eShop once before midnight eastern time on August 11. That consists of 10 GBA and 10 NES Virtual Console titles. It’s up to you to decide whether those 20 games are worth $80 to you.

I’ve wanted a Nintendo 3DS since I’ve always been a Nintendo fanboy, but I’m having a harder time justifying the purchase. That said, I spotted the 3DS on sale for $200 in the Best Buy flyer. So, if I pick that up today, I can still get those 20 “free” games for an effective price of $30. I’d want to know what games they were before taking the plunge, though, since the NES and GBA are filled with both gems and bombs.

If you’re an avid reader of sites like Mobile Magazine, there’s a good chance that you prefer to be on the bleeding edge of technology. If you’re getting an Android phone, you want it to have the latest release from Google, right? And so, are you even the least bit interested in a price drop on the PSP?

Granted, it’s not realy the original PSP-1000, but it may as well be. It’s not even the PSP Go (that not too many care about either). Even so, Sony wants to clear out a bunch of its old stock, so the regular old PlayStation Portable is getting slashed by forty bucks, bringing the sticker price down to just $129.99. That’s starting this Sunday.

At the same time, I guess we have to realize that the PSP2 (NGP) probably won’t be hitting store shelves for a while yet, so at least you have a few months to twiddle around with the single analog stick-equipped PSP for now. And at least Sony is doing something about pricing. Nintendo seems to be mostly holding firm on its DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL pricing leading up to the launch of the Nintendo 3DS next month.

Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) today announced the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system will be available for $129.99 (MSRP) starting February 27, 2011. Since launching in 2005, the PSP system has sold more than 23 million units in North America and 67.8 million worldwide, offering more than 590 engaging titles in North America as well as access to a vast selection of downloadable content from PlayStation Network. In addition to the new price point, 13 new games will be added to the PSP “Greatest Hits” and $9.99 “Favorites” software collections, further delivering upon the PSP system’s incredible entertainment value.

“The PSP system set the standard for complete portable entertainment and continues to be the premiere destination for gamers on-the-go,” said Tim Bender, Senior Vice President, Sales, SCEA. “Nearly six years after its initial launch, demand for the PSP remains strong. This new price point enables us to broaden the PSP platform to a larger group of consumers who are looking for best-in-class handheld entertainment.”

As part of the PSP system’s extensive software catalogue are its “Greatest Hits” and “Favorites” collections. Available for $19.99 (MSRP), Greatest Hits titles have surpassed an impressive sales threshold and represent the highest caliber of quality software available on the PSP system. With nearly 70 titles to date, two of the latest additions include Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines (Ubisoft), DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY (Square Enix, Inc.), LittleBigPlanet (PSP), METAL GEAR SOLID: PEACE WALKER (Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.), Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Resistance: Retribution, and Toy Story 3: The Video Game (Disney Interactive).

New PSP Favorites titles include CRISIS CORE -FINAL FANTASY VII- (Square Enix, Inc. ), Daxter, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (Capcom), Killzone: Liberation, SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs: Fire Team Bravo, and Tomb Raider Anniversary (Square Enix, Inc.).

Maybe you’re in love with the newer Apple iPhone 3GS and all the added horsepower and features that it offers, but you’re not quite in love with the higher price point. You don’t want to opt for the 8GB iPhone 3G, because it’s just not the same. Rogers apparently feels your pain, because there’s word that the Canadian carrier is loading up with an 8GB version of the iPhone 3GS.

This comes from a leaked Rogers document that is pointing toward the imminent launch of the iPhone 3GS in 8GB Black (120080). Presumably, the 8GB iPhone 3GS will still get all the extra speed and features as its higher capacity cousins, but at a more affordable price point.

You’ll also notice that the leaked document mentions something about completing a smooth transition and something about running out of stock of an 8GB model. Based on this wording, I have a feeling that Rogers could be slowly phasing out the 8GB iPhone 3G in favor of the 8GB iPhone 3GS.

In this way, it sounds like the upcoming 8GB iPhone 3GS will take over the $99 (with contract) price point that is currently occupied by the 8GB iPhone 3G. How will Rogers entice you to buy the latter? Could we be looking at a $49 iPhone 3G? Maybe even a free-with-contract iPhone?
