The mobile payment revolution is just around the corner, with companies like Google and Apple both getting behind the technology. While the revolution is coming closer, it will need guidance and direction if it’s going to truly take off. In order to help see mobile payments grow as an option for consumers, a new mobile payment committee is being formed. Many big names such as Google, ISI, VeriFone, Paypal, Wells Fargo, Capital One, and all the major card brands (Visa, MasterCard, etc) have joined the group- meaning it has a very real and capable force behind it.

The primary goals set forth of the the Committee largely have to do with attracting in new merchants that support that technology and exploring the best ways to increase the presence of the technology. Other interests will include lobbying activities and work to train and education the public and merchants about what mobile payments have to offer.

ETA Launches Committee To Guide Emerging Mobile Payments Industry

Mobile Payments Committee Will Include All Four Major Mobile Network Operators and Develop and Implement Industry-Wide Solutions for Mobile Payments

WASHINGTON, DC ─ The Electronic Transactions Association, the trade association of the global electronic payments industry, today launched its new Mobile Payments Committee, an industry-wide task force of representatives from top companies in the innovative market of mobile payments, including all four major mobile network operators – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. The Mobile Payments Committee will develop and implement industry-wide solutions to the complex policy and business issues surrounding the emergence of mobile payments in the U.S and globally.

“Mobile payments represent a game-changing business opportunity for our industry, and ETA’s mission is to help our member companies succeed in this business,” said ETA Chief Executive Officer Jason Oxman. “Our industry must work collaboratively to ensure that the regulatory and business environment promotes innovation and cooperation. As the trade association of the payments industry, ETA is the hub of activity in mobile payments, and our Mobile Payments Committee will help ensure that consumers and merchants have access to an efficient, reliable and secure mobile payments system.”

The Mobile Payments Committee is chaired by Jackie Moran, Executive Director of Federal Relations for Verizon, and includes representatives from ETA member companies engaged in all aspects of mobile commerce, including credit card networks, processors, mobile network operators, developers, financial institutions and device manufacturers. ETA also announced today that all four of the nation’s major mobile network operators – AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon – have become ETA member companies and will participate in the Mobile Payments Committee.

“As a nascent industry, the mobile payments market is just beginning to realize its full potential as a robust enabler of global electronic commerce,” said Moran. “The Mobile Payments Committee is designed to ensure that the early stages of mobile payments are handled in the best possible way: With insight and ingenuity from all the players – private as well as public sector — involved in the exciting future of mobile payments.”

Other ETA member companies participating in the Mobile Payments Committee include Google, Isis, Verizon, Wells Fargo, Capital One, American Express, Discover, MasterCard, Visa, PayPal, VeriFone, Intuit, First Data, Panasonic and Neustar. The Mobile Payments Committee will address several issues facing the future of mobile payments, including:

• the business relationships needed to foster innovation and achieve network interoperability among merchants, credit card companies, mobile networks, equipment operators, equipment manufacturers and financial institutions;
• exploring the necessity of “best practices” that ensure merchants and consumers have access to the most innovative and effective mobile payments solutions;
• the education of legislators and regulators developing public policy around mobile payments; and
• the education of merchants and consumers about the potential of mobile payments to provide a
more efficient, reliable and secure experience at the point of purchase.

ETA’s Mobile Payments Committee will hold its first meeting in late August and hold regular monthly meetings thereafter. The Committee will frequently update companies engaged in the mobile payments industry as well as policymakers on relevant proposals and solutions. While these proposals will remain voluntary, the Mobile Payments Committee will work with member companies to implement them in a comprehensive manner to ensure that the new field of mobile payments provides consumers and merchants with the best, most reliable, and most secure system.

It looks like Square and other mobile payment solutions has a pretty big competitor entering the space. PayPal Here was just announced and the iPhone app can work in tandem with a credit card dongle to accept payments in real life.

The target market is mostly small businesses, particularly those that are mobile. When they’re reading to ring up a customer, they simply tally up the order in the app–either by selecting items they’ve added to their inventory or simply punching in the full amount–and then select the method of payment. If they opt for a credit card (or presumably debit card too), you use the swiper in the triangle-shaped credit card dongle. The customer adds a tip (if desired) and signs right on the iPhone’s touchscreen. Yes, that means handing over your iPhone to your customer.

The PayPal Here app can also be used to accept payment via cash, check (using the iPhone’s camera), invoice, or PayPal. I imagine they’d have to sign into their PayPal account to get it to work, which could be a little time-consuming. You’ve also run into a snag if someone has a chip and PIN-enabled credit card, since the swiper only seems to work with the standard magnetic stripe.

In any case, the initial rollout is planned for USA, Australia, Hong Kong and Canada. Merchants are charge 2.7% on card swipes and they can get a business debit card with 1% cash back on eligible purchases. The little dongle, which simply plugs into the headphone jack on your iPhone, is free upon request.

Not too long ago MySpace wore the crown as King of social networking. Fast forward today and MySpace is little more than a joke with Facebook running the show. The internet is a fast-paced ever changing world and social networking is no exception.

In order to stay relevant Facebook has tried to deeply tie itself to smartphones over the years, but with little real success outside of a Facebook app. Despite its struggle to develop into something more than an app, the company is now launching its own phone running on a customized version of Android and utilizing HTC hardware.

With the recent creation of a Paypal Facebook app that allows social networking in-app payments, such a move might not be a horrible idea and would allow a quick way to make payments through your phone. Although Facebook has its own apps and the new Paypal app, I really can’t see that much else about the phone that would make it special.

On the other hand, a custom version of Android with deeper software integration could possibly attract users while also allowing Facebook to monetize in-app payments. Despite no clear proof that customers really want such a phone, Facebook seems to have high hopes that such a product could sell well.

The biggest burden to customizing Android is that this doesn’t guarantee that Gmail, Maps, or even the Android Market will exist on the Facebook phone. Without these features it seems unlikely that such a phone can do well.

For now this is only a rumor and Facebook hasn’t officially confirmed the phone’s status or if it even exists. Is such a phone a good idea? Although I have my doubts, it is really tough to call at this point.

Maybe you owe your favorite freelance writer some cash and you’re nowhere near a computer? Well, PayPal is coming to the rescue if you so happen to have a BlackBerry on your hip.

The popular online money transfer system has just announced a new application for BlackBerry smartphones. The app, as you can guess, gives you access to your PayPal account so that you can send some cash to whatever recipient that you’d like.

Where this app gets a little more interesting is that it actually integrates with the native contact list on your BlackBerry. This makes it really easy for you to choose the recipient. The app will also let you see you account balance and transaction history.

The appropriately named “Send Money” app will be found in the BlackBerry App World and it will be made available in Canada, USA, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland, Portugal and Australia. It’s not there for download right now, but it should show up soon. The iPhone and Android versions of the app will offer similar functionality.
