One of these options is the new Armor Series case from Otterbox, designed for the iPhone 4/4S. This case has a thermoplastic shell, is precision fit to 300th of an inch for the 4 and 4S, and has a medical-grade stainless steel latch. The translation is, you won’t find hardly any other device stronger or safer for your iPhone, unless you want to go the extreme route a get a huge steel $650 case for it. Considering the case is too huge and heavy to be of any use though, I’d say the Armor Series is probably a better bet.

The bad news is that we don’t know how much this sturdy case costs just yet, though I would expect to pay a fairly hefty sum, considering just how solid the case seems to be. To learn more about the case you can always visit Otterbox’s website, which will likely soon have pricing information as well, since a timer exists on the page counting down about 25 days (as of this writing) until it is officially out. OtterBox has ruggedized our lives yet again with the announcement and availability of two tablet protection offerings; the iPad 2 and BlackBerry PlayBook Defender Series Cases.

Both cases are made of a hardshell hi-impact polycarbonate with a one piece silicon jacket that surrounds your tablet for increased shock protection. The PlayBook case has a clear screen protector built-in to the shell which adds protection all around from dust, water drops, you name it. The iPad 2 version does not, but OtterBox is still including a stand-alone screen protector for you to apply for protection. Otterbox is known for their durable cases. I took a look at the Defender Case for iPad when it first came out and it has held up very nicely since. But what about those situations where you’re in the field and need a bit more “grip” and flexibility? Check out the new Utility Series Latch case, it has straps elastics and can really be positioned on to anything. It looks as though Otterbox crafted an addon for the Defender case, as the photos show the iPad in the Defender case with the Latch. The website isn’t clear about it but i’m guessing the $85 Defender is not included. Either way you can hang it off posts, beams, strap it to your palm, dangle it like a necklace, and its just $50. I’m still waiting for a waterproof one myself.

Inspired by the crumple zone of a car, OtterBox’s new Reflex series iPhone 4 and BlackBerry Curve cases use polycarbonate and TPE rubber and air to keep your phone safe, even in (or falling from) the hands of the worst of butterfingers.

The cases create an air bumper around the phone, allowing the outer layer of rubber to take the impact of drops before springing back into place to take another hit. And it doesn’t take up as much room as you would think from its job description: It adds about 1/8″ on all sides and the back, and weighs about 22 grams, or 1/5 the weight of the iPhone 4.

They aren’t giving an exact release date, but the csae will be available “soon” on their website for $45. We’ll be sure to drop a couple iPhone 4s once this one comes in.

Otterbox Defender iPad Case

The iPad has established itself as one of the coolest gadgets of the year, and is a must have if you love Apple.  Its large display, crystal clear screen, and a multitude of features make it one of the most impressive tablets on the market.  Check out Mobile Magazine’s iPad review here. However, like all iDevices, they do leave something to be desired in the area of durability.

Fortunately, or unfortunately in respects to decision making, there are multitudes of cases available for you to buy.  The most noteworthy iPad case on the market is the Otterbox Defender.  It features three layers of protection, a screen protector, and a hefty $90 price tag.  Otterbox has made quality cases in the past for countless mobile devices, Blackberry’s and the iPhone 3G/3GS; but can the iPad version of the Defender live up to expectations?

Features and Design
The case itself consists of three layers: a hard inner shell, silicon outer shell, and hard outside shell with stand, this protects the screen on the go.   The layers all overlap like a suit of advanced armor providing for maximum protection with very few weaknesses.  A removable tab allows you to easily access the dock connector without removing the entire case. The materials are incredibly well made and light, considering the amount of protection you’re planning on getting. They protect your iPad against bumps, shocks, drops and dust intrusion. But it will not protect your iPad from water.

Overall Performance
Ergonomically, the stand and screen protector work well for your everyday use.  All buttons are accessible, and the stand/outer shell works great in portrait mode. The screen protector allows you to use your iPad’s touch screen with no problems whatsoever if applied correctly. Its a thin film of plastic that sticks to your display flawlessly  That being said, the case’s only weakness is the standard full screen sized adhesive protector. You need a very clean surface and a bit of patience to get it right.  The cardboard air bubble remover is essential to getting it right.  Once you do, it’s on for good and hardly noticeable.

The Defender is tough, but I’m not going to say it’s indestructible.  The hard layers protect from big bangs, while the silicone absorbs shocks from falls, covers your ports, and can really save the day in case of an accidental drop.  It can stand up to some pretty decent drops.  I’ll go as far to say that you’ll have to look to break the case, in order for it to be broken.

Wireless connectivity does suffer a tad when wrapped in its protective sheath. I noticed on average a 30% reduction in signal strength. One trade off in respects to near indestructibility.

Bottom Line
Despite the high price tag, and the generic screen protector, I highly recommend the Otterbox Defender for your iPad.  If you’re using it in an environment where “shit happens,” this case is the one you want. It’s the strongest and best-made case I’ve come across since I bought  my iPad.  It may be expensive and not waterproof, but the extra $90 you spend on the case could very well save the $500+ investment you’ve put into your iPad, so long as it doesn’t take a dip.

OtterBox Commuter Series Case

Just unveiled today, a trio of cases for the iPhone 4 from OtterBox.  The cases are “coming soon” and will provide your iPhone various amounts of protection depending on your chosen armor.  The OtterBox Defender Series is a black case which is NAC tested to address the loss in signal strength. The Commuter Series case provides two layers of security, a silicone mid-layer and a polycarbonate shell to protect against bump and shock.  The third case is the OtterBox Impact Series, a single layer of silicone skin, with inner coring that is designed to dissipate shock away from the iPhone 4.  The most durable solution from OtterBox.  No pricing or ship dates have been announced.  Full press release below.

The rugged Otterbox Defender case for the Apple iPad

Two tough cases were revealed today for the Apple iPad.  They are from none other than OtterBox, the well known rugged case designer.  OtterBox has given us two options, the Communter and Defender, depending on your daily mission.

The Commuter series case is a bit more “light” in respects to armor protection.  It’s still got ruggedness to it, just a slimmer version.   Being able to slide your iPad in and out of the case will be easy, access to ports are protected with silicone plugs.

The Defender series is a bit clunky looking, making the iPad appear to be something released in the mid-80s. Not that that’s a bad thing. It offers three layers of protection, not sure what that is yet, but it’s three layers.   There’s a stand for propping it up on a table, and snap off access panel for your iPad connector or dock.

Either the Defender or Commuter cases are waterproof.  Don’t take your iPad for a dip in the pool or you will be sorry. They are only designed to protect against dust, shocks, drops and bumps. They both come with screen protector skins to protect against scratches.  Hopefully we will see a fully submersible iPad case in the future, until then, these are your options.  Shipping is this summer, pricing is $64.95 for the Commuter, $25 more for the Defender.
