It was expected sooner than later, but now it’s become reality. By hard work and determination of Android Police’s own in-house hacker named (appropriately) Justin Case and helpers like Vashypooh, Trevor Eckhart, and IOMoster of TeamWin, the rooting of Amazon’s Kindle Fire has become possible once again. This is after Amazon’s firmware upgrade to version 6.2.1 killed root privileges. In an exclusive post to Android Police, restoring the root on Kindle Fire looks like this:

Download jcase’s Kindle Fire root app.

Run the root app and click “Root.”

On your PC, in a command prompt, type “adb root.”

Download Superuser.

Unzip Superuser.

In the command prompt, type:

adb remount
adb push su /system/xbin/su
adb shell chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su
adb shell chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su
adb install com.noshufou.android.su-1.apk
adb reboot

Sure, it might take an app called SuperOneClick to un-root your Fire first, but according to first happy customers the procedure works fine if the instructions are followed closely and with an understanding of what each command does. So far, users need to know how to use ADB debug mode to clean your Fire from previous rooting attempts, if there were any. Then, the TWRP recovery utility might be much help pre-installed, to be on the safe side when some mistakes, mistypes, or otherwise bungled permissions would result in boot loops, or other sorts of soft-bricking your Kindle Fire.

Good discussions of this procedure helped by Justin Case himself can be found at rootzwiki. The next firmware silent “upgrade” via OTA may break this root again, but for those Fire users who would decide to take path to CyanogenMod 7 and Ice Cream Sandwich from here there will be no more sneaky upgrades from Amazon. The rooting procedure has got the name BurritoRoot, the implications of which we described earlier.

Now I have another reason to make me want go back to school, and that is Supernote. Supernote is an app that helps you take…notes, but in a super way. It had previously been shown on the Eee Pad Transformer and Slider earlier this month, when ASUS brought out the OTA update to Android 3.2.1, but now there are more details on new features within Supernote and they sound really nice.

Students will be able to write or scribble (doesn’t anyone doodle in class anymore?) using the keyboard or their own fingers and the Supernote app will go ahead and convert each hand-drawn item into an image, thus, allowing users to modify or delete their own characters. You can also insert graphs and charts when you’re in math class, resize the image and drag it around and you can also insert those diagrams into your lecture notes.

Supernote will even let you take the lazy way out of class (yes!) and let you snap a picture of whatever your teacher is scribbling on the blackboard and then you can insert those pictures into your notes, thus, letting you worry about it later or perhaps never.

The Galaxy S line of smartphones from Samsung are pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the line happens to lag pretty far behind when it comes to getting Android updates. I guess you could say that it’s better late than never?

For those who are rocking a Samsung Vibrant through T-Mobile, your wait is finally over. They’re finally going to start pushing out Android 2.2 Froyo to your chosen smartphone.

T-Mobile and Samsung originally indicated that they were doing a “staggered rollout” of the Froyo update. Interestingly, this has all changed today allowing for the end user to update on their own.

The hope is that the Vibrant update will finally open up the floodgates for the other Galaxy S phones sold in the United States, as they are — as of yet — still Froyo-less in status. Are the carriers to blame? Samsung reportedly sent Froyo to T-Mo in November! The carrier has just been fiddling with skins and Wi-Fi calling functionality for the last couple months.

T-Mobile’s official announcement states: “A software update is available for the Samsung Vibrant. It updates the device from Android 2.1 (Éclair) to Android 2.2 (Froyo). This upgrade includes Wi-Fi calling, USB / Wi-Fi tethering, and various software enhancements. This upgrade will not be sent to customers Over the Air (OTA) – Instead, you must install the upgrade by connecting your Vibrant to a PC using Samsung Kies Mini software.”
