I think we all knew this day was coming, but now we’ve now got word coming straight out of Cupertino’s proverbial mouth. The App Store for Macs has been formally announced and it is scheduled to open its virtual doors on January 6.

As you can expect, the Mac App Store will function in much the same way as the iTunes App Store works for your iPhone and iPad. You shop around for some new applications, downloading and buying at will to expand the functionality on your MacBook or iMac.

The service, which will be made available to 90 countries at launch, will include paid and free apps in categories like Education, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Utilities, and — most importantly of all — Games. Apple takes a third of proceeds as its cut.

The Mac App Store will be integrated into the upcoming OS X Lion release, but Snow Leopard users can get in on the action through a free software update. This sounds, once again, like Apple is exerting a little more control over software distribution, which is why there’s a Cydia for Mac coming along for the ride too.

The post Official: Mac App Store to open in 90 countries next month appeared first on Mobile Magazine.
