Olympus’ New Touchscreen Microscope Will Let You Handle Ebola Without Death

The new Olympus Opto-Digital Microscope DSX series was recently released in Japan. It’s significance is that features a fully integrated touch screen monitor. This technology will allow you to get “hands on” with your samples and microscopic samples. Closer than you would ever have before, its designed to be very user-friendly, all you do is place your sample on the stage and the rest of the operations are done via the touch screen display. This includes focusing, centering, and magnification. After viewing the sample you can even generate a report based on your findings.

The microscopes are only available in Japan and throughout Asia. While not yet in the US or Europe, Olympus has confirmed it does eventually plan to introduce them globally at a later date.

Olympus PEN E-P3 micro four-thirds camera gets priced and dated

The micro four-thirds format pioneered by Panasonic and Olympus is just trucking along with incremental advancements and enhancements. The latest to join the bunch is the Olympus PEN E-P3, which has now received official pricing and release date information.

I use the Olympus E-PL1 myself, which is a little more consumer-oriented, but they both use the same 12.3 MP sensor and the same basic form factor. One feature that the new E-P3 is borrowing from the E-PL1 (and E-PL2) is the pop-up flash, a feature that was missing on the E-P1 and E-P2.

The autofocus time on the PEN series hasn’t always been fantastic, but Olympus says that the E-P3 fixes that with the “world’s fastest AF” in its class. They’re also bumping ISO to 12,800, tacking on full HD video recording, and adding a 3-inch OLED touchscreen. The good news is that the manual buttons are still there if you don’t like the touchscreen.

In any case, you can expect the Olympus PEN E-P3 to sell for $900 when it ships this August. At that price, you can choose from the Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm II R f3.5/5.6 optical zoom lens or the Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f2.8 prime lens. That’s not particularly cheap, considering I got my E-PL1 last year for $450 (including the 14-42mm kit lens) and that was before the E-PL2 showed up.

Olympus’s PEN series was supposedly started to bridge the gap between compact point-and-shoot style cameras and the bigger and sometimes heavier DSLR cameras, making for reasonable cameras with reasonable accessories. The new model which was recently inadvertently unveiled, is the Olympus PEN Mini, also known as the E-PM1. It’s said to be of a similar size as the Olympus XZ-1, while seeming slightly wider, this new model is rumored to bring about new features such as a touchscreen display, a brand new imaging engine and sensor and improved circuitry that should deliver reduced power consumption and increased battery life.

43 Rumors reports that the new Olympus’ ultra-fast auto-focus will be highly superior in comparison to the Panasonic GH2 AF and many DSLR cameras out in the market today. While it sounds too risky from a marketing point of view, if true, it would be a welcome feature and upgrade as the older Olympus PEN E-P1, which, while producing great looking images, was also criticized for having a slow focusing system.

For any person, a slow focusing system means that one has to wait a while before the image focuses into perspective, which isn’t a problem if you are taking pictures of landscapes and/or nature, but action shots, such as taking pictures of objects and people in motion, would have an inferior quality.

The latest word is that the new Olympus will arrive around June 30^th, with no other prospected news since then.

Olympus TOUGH TG-810 Camera Withstands 100kg of Crushing Force

Have you ever accidentally sat on your phone, camera, MP3 player, or other portable electronic device? There’s a possibility that you broke something. With the Olympus TOUGH TG-810, apparently you don’t have to worry as much about that kind of thing.

Continuing with the rugged pedigree of the TOUGH line, the TG-810 will reportedly hold up to 100kg of crushing force. They’re saying that it’s a crushproof camera, thanks to things like the double-durable lens (and metal lens barrier) and port technology. The styling cues won’t be for everyone and the picture quality likely won’t rival the company’s micro four-thirds offerings, but at least you can go snorkeling with the TOUGH TG-810 and get it trapped under a rock. Expect to see it this month for $400.

Panasonic GF2 vs. Olympus E-PL2: Which micro four-thirds is for you?

I’m a big fan of the micro four-thirds format. You get the flexibility of interchangeable lenses, a larger sensor, and all kinds of SLR-like controls in a package that isn’t much bigger than a point-and-shoot. But which camera reigns supreme?

Kai from Digital Rev has put together a fun comparison video between the two newest entrants in this realm: the Panasonic GF2 and the Olympus E-PL2. As is the case with all of Kai’s videos, he’s pretty lighthearted about the whole thing, but there are some good points raised.

In terms of the JPEGs that these cameras spit out, the Oly came out on top with better detail at higher ISOs. The Oly also has those fun art filters, which Kai reminds us are good for the hipster crowd. The Panny, by contrast, is more on the serious side.

At the end of the day, the question of GF2 or E-PL2 is basically the same as the question of GF1 or E-PL1. Except, well, the GF2 has a touchscreen that, like so many other touchscreen cameras, works terribly. For the record, I have an E-PL1 and I love it. I just need to get me one of those Panasonic 20mm pancake lenses!

Introducing the Olympus E-PL2 micro four-thirds digital camera

Those of you who read my personal blog will know that I recently picked up the Olympus E-PL1. I need a replacement camera after my Canon got stolen and the E-PL1 offers SLR-like functionality with interchangeable lenses and a larger sensor, while being not that much bigger than a point-and-shoot. We’ve already seen the pseudo-update called the E-PL1s, but a true successor is reportedly making its debut next week at CES.

Of course, fans of the micro four-thirds format probably could have predicted that an Olympus E-PL2 was in the works. After all, Panasonic just recently announced the pending availability of its GF2 to follow up on the GF1. So, what is new with the upcoming Olympus E-PL2? Well, aesthetically, it looks pretty much the same as the E-PL1.

That is to say that it’s still taller but not as wide as the E-P1 and E-P2. From what I can see, it retains the pop-up flash and the slight bulge of a hand grip on the side. While the standard E-PL2 kit will reportedly still come with a 14-42mm F3.5/5.6 kit lens, this one is a slightly different breed than the kit lens that came with the current Olympus PEN series.

There’s still a direct movie button too, but the max ISO has been bumped to 6400, a new Dramatic Tone art filter has been added, and the LCD has been upgraded to a 3.0-inch 460k dot display. A “PENPAL” external Bluetooth module is being announced too, which attaches to the hotshoe and allows you to instantly send pictures via your Android or Windows smartphone to Flickr, Facebook, and other social networks. I’d imagine this is an optional accessory, much like the electronic viewfinder and mic adapter.

No word on price, but the Olympus E-PL2 is expected to make its official debut at CES before going on sale in February.

The world of Android smartphones is getting more and more enticing by the moment. One of the latest devices to get leaked out on the Internet is the Motorola Olympus. We had heard about this phone before, but this is one of the first times that we’ve seen real live photos of the upcoming device. And it’s quite the looker too.

Also known as the MB860, the Motorola Olympus is one of the new generation of smartphones getting powered by the Nvidia Tegra 2 processor. This is supposed to be a step up from the Qualcomm Snapdragon processors that we’re seeing on so many devices today. You’ll also notice the beautiful four-inch display; from what I hear, it’s not AMOLED, but more likely SLCD.

Backing up Android 2.2 Froyo (or possibly 2.3 Gingerbread) is the MOTOBLUR user interface that we’ve come to expect from Motorola smartphones. The Olympus also has a pair of cameras and HDMI out. Looking pretty darn slick there, but it’ll easily blend in among the crowd of other large-screened Android phones.

In any case, we expect to see the Olympus make its official debut at CES 2011 in Las Vegas next month. I plan to be on hand, so I’ll do my best to stop by the Moto booth to take a look at the real deal.
