There are a variety of causes for the occurrence of blindness, such as the lack of enough blood supply for the retina. If it doesn’t get proper amounts of oxygen, the result will be permanent blindness. The chances of preventing it depend on when the doctors realize if a patient’s retina is not receiving sufficient oxygen; the sooner the better. Prof. Bradley Nelson and his team of researchers at ETH Zurich seem to have found out a solution.

Earlier the team created microrobots, measuring a millimeter in length and one third of a millimeter in width, which could be used to deliver medication or remove scar tissue in the eye. Magnetic fields can be used to guide these tiny robots through the vitreous fluid.

They coated these microrobots with nanospheres made of a dye, which fluoresces when exposed to a specific wavelength of light. This fluorescence fades faster if there is higher amount of oxygen surrounding the dye. Now the team can inject these oxygen sensing dye-coated robots into the vitreous fluid to move them to the surface of the retina. They would then apply light to observe the dye’s fluorescence, and thereby determine the amount of oxygen around the area. The robots can be removed from the eye later on by magnetically attaching them to an inserted needle.

According to ETH, other methods now available for determining the oxygen levels within the eye are not sensitive enough. The method using microrobots have already been tested in water samples with different O2 levels and were found to be a success.

Everybody is excited about the arrival of Samsung’s latest and greatest smartphone, the Galaxy S4, and the thrill increases when an online retailer comes out with an awesome offer. Carphone Warehouse has just announced that they will be giving away a free Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch tablet along with pre-orders for the S4.

In order to get in on the deal, you must act fast since the offer will only available to the first 2000 people who order the S4 on a pay monthly order. At the time of writing this the deal is still there, but it probably won’t last long as a free dual-core Jelly Bean powered tablet with the S4 is a great deal and to make things sweeter they have also added an accessory pack with a screen protector, case and car charger into the offer. Carphone Warehouse will ship the device on April 26th.

So, all of you folks over at UK, are you going to order the device from Carphone Warehouse? Or are you going with Vodafone or EE or O2?

As for those of you in the US, AT&T announced that the S4 will be available for pre-order on April 16 for $249.99 with a two-year contract. Interested? Or are you thinking about Sprint or MetroPCS?

The original PSP was only offered in black. Then, they came out with certain special editions and other iterations that outfitted the portable gamer in a variety of colors and designs. The Xperia Play is barely out of the gate, but Sony Ericsson is already breaking out the paint bucket.

We thought that, at least in the short term, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play would only be offered in the standard black. We thought wrong. If you happen to be in the UK and you like O2, you might be pleased to hear that the device formerly known as the PSPhone is also being sold there in white. And it’s exclusive (or Xclusive, if you prefer) to O2.

Aside from the paint job, there really isn’t anything different with the white version, but it does look sleeker in white. The almost ironic thing? The Xperia Play beat the iPhone 4 to the punch in the battle of white paint. Go figure. No word on whether the white Xperia Play will be offered outside the UK, but I imagine someone else will get it eventually.

Get ready for one of the largest wireless carriers on the planet, because two juggernauts are about to become one unified Goliath. Orange and T-Mobile are set for a merger and this newfound business relationship is currently seeking approval from the European Commission.

By combining their powers, T-Mobile and Orange will become the largest mobile phone company in the United Kingdom. The only major speedbump left in their path is a request from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), checking for any issues related to a monopoly or something similar.

For instance, 3 is the smallest mobile phone network in the UK and it has largely been credited with driving the price down in recent years. A bigger juggernaut may be able to muscle out a smaller firm like 3 (which is owned by Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa).

To overcome this concern, the new deal gives 3 access to 3,000 more mast sites across the UK, and gives them the largest 3G network in the United Kingdom. Further still, T-Mobile and Orange will need to forfeit 25% of their current spectrum so that competitors can jump in for some wireless broadband.

Let’s not forget about Vodafone and O2 too. They might not be happy with this merger either.
