First, it started with all sorts of rumors. Then, we learned that what we thought was the Nokia E72 was really the Nokia E63. After that, we caught a glimpse at the “real” Nokia E72. And then, it got delayed. It’s been quite the adventure, but the journey is finally reaching its destination. Want a Nokia E72 smartphone? Now you can get it.

This has been a very long time coming, but the Nokia E72 is finally available for sale through the official Nokia USA store and Amazon. Both sites are still showing the handset as avaialble for pre-order, but we hear that it’s ready to roll and shipments could go out as early as this afternoon.

Running our way through the spec sheet, you find a form factor that is quite similar to the Nokia E71 that preceded it, complete with a landscape display and full QWERTY keyboard. Among the upgrades are 10.2Mbps HSDPA, integrated compass, S60 3rd Edition, improved email functionality, and a five-megapixel autofocus camera.

The official press release says the phone is in stores now, but it makes no mention of price. Amazon has it listed at $469.

Nokia has announced a recall on millions of faulty cellphone chargers that could possibly shock users. The recall is for Nokia-branded chargers manufactured by BYD Electronic Company of China. The plastic housing surrounding the chargers can separate, thus exposing the internals potentially creating a shock hazard.

Nokia says they will replace millions of effected faulty cellphone chargers for free.

Defective Chargers

Only three chargers fit in to the recall category as of today. Chargers with model numbers AC-3E and AC-3U manufactured between June 15, 2009 and August 9, 2009, as well as Model number AC-4U manufactured between April 13, 2009 and October 25, 2009.

Check your Charger

Checking your charger is easy. Go to the label where the voltage and manufacturing information is printed. Here it should show your model number and manufacturer name. If yours is affected, you will need the model number (item 1) and identification number (item 2).

What To Do

To replace your charger, simply go to Nokia’s dedicated charger exchange Website, enter your charger’s model and identification numbers, then follow the rest of the steps for an exchange. Alternatively you can get a replacement by calling Nokia directly at 1-888-Nokia2U.

Nokia had previous quality issues from third-party suppliers in the past. In 2007 faulty batteries made by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. posed a threat of overheating. Nokia replaced 46 million batteries for customers, however a formal recall was not issued.

While big brother Rogers Wireless is gearing up with the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and other ultimate webphones, poor puppy Fido has been left fighting for table scraps. Since Fido is approaching budget-minded consumers, it’s not surprising that one of the newest phones to join the dog house is another budget-minded handset.

It’s not available quite yet, but the Nokia 2720 Fold has made its first official appearance on the Fido website. You won’t find it in the official stable just yet, but it is being promoted on the front page as a phone that is “coming soon.”

The Nokia 2720 Fold is meant to be a stylish and simple flip phone for people who just want a phone. You get some basic features though, including a 1.3 megapixel camera (with video), FM radio with RDS, Bluetooth, and an MP3 player.

Expect the Nokia 2720 Fold to sell for $125 outright. If you prefer to take on a new two-year contract, Fido will hook you up with the 2720 for free.

We got a good look at the Nokia N86 camera phone when we learned that the Nokia flagship stores would be selling it in the United States, but what about a carrier subsidy? Well, Canadians are getting treated to eight megapixels of greatness, thanks to Rogers Wireless.

It’s not like this announcement came out of left field. Early last week, we caught a leak about some ultimate webphones from Rogers and now this is coming to fruition. The best part is that the Nokia N86 is going to be really affordable too.

Easily the single-biggest selling feature on this slider phone is the inclusion of the 8-megapixel camera. That looks like one truly outstanding camera, but since this is an N-series handset, you get all of that smartphone functionality too. YOu don’t get a touchscreen or a QWERTY keyboard, though, so typing might be a bit of a struggle.

There’s no specific word as to when Rogers Wireless will start selling the Nokia N86, but they do mention a $99.99 contract price and a release date in time for the holidays.

The Nokia N-Gage platform never got quite as popular as Nokia would have hoped, even though it sounded like a reasonable idea going in. People like to play games and people like to have cell phones, so why not combine the two to make a more unified experience? After much deliberation, Nokia has come to decision to put N-Gage out of its misery.

Over on the official N-Gage blog, Nokia posted an entry saying that the N-Gage publishing platform will effectively be sent to the glue factory in less than a year. Kick the bucket. Buy the farm. However you want to put it, N-Gage will be kaput in September 2010.

That doesn’t mean that Nokia is giving up on mobile gaming altogether. Instead, all of their cell phone-based gaming aspirations will be sent over the Ovi Store. This way, Nokia consumers have a single location to buy their games and other apps for their Nokia mobile devices.

The tradeoff is that this is a complete and utter death for N-Gage, meaning that any high scores, messaging, and N-Gage Arena friend lists will also be kicked out to the pasture. In order to move forward, I guess, you have to stop looking back.

Offering a smartphone-like experience at a more affordable price is the newly announced Nokia Surge 6790.

This announcement didn’t exactly come out of left field, but it’s good to see an official unveiling of this handy little phone. In its closed position, you get the regular call and end keys, as well as the five-way navigator. However, it’s when you slide it open on its side that you get to see the Surge’s true prowess.

The placement of the screen makes a lot more sense in landscape position, since it is centered on the device as shown. You get the full QWERTY keyboard, the quick access buttons to the right, and the yellow highlights are for digits if you need them.

In terms of other features, you get a 2 megapixel camera, GPS, microSD expansion, the 2.4-inch QVGA display, and a slick black design scheme. Expect the Nokia Surge 6790 to sell for just $29.99 with a qualifying three-year contract.

The Maemo-powered Nokia N900 Internet tablet looks like it’s quite the powerful beast, but how good does it fare when it comes to applications that are usually better suited to a full-blown computer? Staska from Unwired View decided to give BitTorrent a whirl on his N900 and the results are quite mixed.

One of the first things he installed on the Nokia N900 is Transmission, a BitTorrent client that’ll happily run on the N900 for all your downloading needs. He tried to start up a torrent and it seemed to connect just fine, downloading the video file without a hitch.

It’s also very good that the Nokia N900 Internet tablet was able to play the XviD file natively without any patches or bug fixes. Further still, the standard Wi-Fi connection was able to yield an average download speed of 700 KB/sec, ramping up to 2.25MB/sec at one point. That’s the good news.

In terms of bad news, the N900 does not have any software available to de-compress RAR files, a format favored by many BitTorrent users. Second, downloading a single 300MB file via BitTorrent tore through 20% of the battery. This means that you’ll barely survive the download of four or five episodes.

So, in short, BitTorrent works on the N900, but it’s far from perfect.

Might I interest you in Nokia’s first ever netbook offering? How do you feel about signing a new contract with AT&T to do it? Would you prefer to buy the handy new device outright and not deal with a service agreement at all? Well, it seems that you’ll have that choice with the Nokia Booklet 3G.

For the new netbook from Nokia, you’ll have one of two options. If you have no adversive reactions to new contract, you can latch onto a new two-year agreement with AT&T and they’ll gladly supply you with a Booklet 3G for $299. For this contract, you’ll need a minimum monthly data plan of $60, which gives you 5GB of data each month. Over the cousre of a 24-month contract, you’ll be looking at a pre-tax total of $1,739.

Too scary for you? Well, you can take the unsubdized route instead to get the Nokia Booklet 3G without a contract. If that’s your preferred plan of action, the new Nokia netbook will cost you $599. You can still surf the web via Wi-Fi, but if you want to take advantage of that 3G connection, do know that the device is SIM locked to AT&T.

Other highlights from today’s Nokia press event include a mention of 12 hours of battery life with Windows 7, the confirmation that Best Buy is the exclusive retail partner for the Booklet 3G, and the confirmation that AT&T is the exclusive activation partner for the device.

You know that legislation that was passed requiring wireless carriers in Canada to provide at least one phone in their lineup that is well-suited for the visually impaired? Whereas big brother Rogers gets the Nokia E71 for this purpose, it seems that the poor visually-impaired dog is getting something much, much older.

To satisfy the requirements laid out by the government, Fido has decided to launch the “all new” Nokia 6682. Does this phone look familiar to you? It should, because the Nokia 6682 was initially released way back in 2005 and has since been discontinued. I guess Fido found some old stock, because it is back.

Just like the modified Nokia E71 for Rogers, the Nokia 6682 for Fido will come preloaded with TALKS, an application that changes text messages and other on-screen content into speech. This is supposed to help people who have trouble seeing.

The reset of the specs keep up with their 2005 roots, giving you a 1.3 megapixel camera (with video!), a 2.1-inch (176×208 pixel) display, MP3 player, and Bluetooth. Expect to pay $100 with a two-year contract.

It can be challenging figuring out how to use a cell phone when you suffer from vision loss or, even more so, full blindness. The CRTC mandated in July that wireless carriers had to provide at least one handset that could cater to this demographic. Well, Rogers is coming forward with one, but it’s a phone that they already had.

The Nokia E71 is already a pretty powerful phone with its full QWERTY keyboard, smartphone OS, and 3.2-megapixel camera, but the version being developed to help those with vision impairments is getting equipped with TALKS software from Nuance.

This software gives users the ability to have text messages, caller ID, or any other text content on the screen read to them as speech. This way, even if they cannot read the actual words on the screen, they can hear them.

It may seem like a nice gesture, but I’m not so convinced that the E71 is the best phone for the job. The screen can be a little on the cramped side, cramming a lot of information into that QVGA resolution, so reading the text can be even more challenging that it would be on another phone. The smaller buttons of the QWERTY keyboard can make for a challenge too.

Whatever the case, you can find the Nuance TALKS-equipped Nokia E71 through Rogers Wireless for $99.99 with a qualifying three-year voice and data service agreement.
