In the Android world, “bigger is better” seems to be the official stance of most hardware vendors as 5-inch smartphones have quickly become the norm. Now it looks like Nokia might be interested in following this same trend with a new Windows Phone 8 Lumia device sometime later this year – at least that’s the plan according to “sources with knowledge of the company’s plans”.

Unfortunately not much else is revealed about Nokia’s future plans for a larger sized smartphone, or even what kind of hardware the 5-inch Lumia might be packing.

From what we are hearing, Nokia is actually interested in releasing several high-end smartphones later this year, though. This includes a device that will sport a 40MP Pureview camera, which supposedly will be launched in July. It will also include Verizon’s Lumia 928 variant of the popular Nokia 920.

This latest rumor about Nokia’s plans comes right on the heels of the company’s announcement earlier today that it managed to ship 5.6 million Lumia handsets during the first quarter of this year. That’s a 25 percent jump from what was shipped in the 4th quarter of last year.

While that’s a positive sign, it is still nothing compared to the massive 61 million smartphones shipped by Samsung during that time period. Apple also shipped an impressive 37 million iPhones during that time frame.

Nokia’s Lumia line and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 are certainly making a much bigger splash than phones running on Windows Phone 7 ever did, but it is still an uphill battle if they truly want to compete directly against Android or iOS.

We’ve known for a while now that Nokia is preparing a few other Lumia handsets, even if they have yet to officially announce it. Now a new commercial for Dutch carrier KPN seems to reveal one of these upcoming Nokia handsets.

The commercial is meant to showcase the Nokia Lumia 920, but it also gives us a look at something that is much more curved at one point, something that looks like a Lumia but is clearly not any existing model.

The design itself looks somewhat like a mix of the Lumia 822 and Lumia 620. More than likely, it is another budget or mid-range device, though its hard to say for sure at this potent.

Whatever this handset is, here’s to hoping we learn more about it about Mobile World Congress. What do you think, like the curved design of this one or not? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

Want to know what the future holds? While we can’t tell you that, how about settling for a glimpse into the future of the Nokia Lumia line instead?

It seems that a design patent that was filed back in December of 2011 has now appeared, giving us an idea of what a potential future Nokia Lumia design might look like, perhaps even one of the rumored new Windows Phone 8 handsets like the Noka Lumia 1000.

At first glance, it seems to share quite a bit in common with Nokia’s Asha 205 feature phone, which makes sense considering the Asha design has actually done extremely well globally.

Alright but what proof is there that this design patent for 2011 is actually coming to a new handset? It seems that was previously spotted in a leaked Nokia Lumia concept video. Again, that’s nothing definitive and certainly doesn’t mean that we’ll see such a device at MWC, but it does indicate that this design is actively being considered.

What do you think, do you hope this turns out to be a new Windows Phone 8 handset slated for this year or are you less than impressed with the design?

[Rumor] appeared first on Mobile Magazine.

A new photo has now hit the net of what appears to be a massive Galaxy Note-sized Nokia smartphone. The prototype is known as the “Juggernaut Semaphore” and in a setting screen photo reveals that it is running on an up-to-date Snapdragon S4 chipset.

So what is this thing exactly? It could easily be an earlier prototype device that was completely canned, especially judging by the use of the older “Windows Phone 7” logo on the phone’s front. That said, the presence of a Family Room tile indicates this isn’t Windows Phone 7.8— this is clearly Windows Phone 8 onboard.

The other option is that this is a prototype that is an experiment to see how a larger-sized Nokia phablet would look and feel.

How do we know that this isn’t going to be a commercial device in its current form? Besides the left edge that reads “property of Nokia not for sale”, the biggest indicator is the screen’s resolution. A measely 480×800 is probably good enough for an experimental build to test the viability of phablet-sized devices.

It isn’t good enough to be a real device (unless it is targeted at those that need a big screen for seeing, but don’t need a good resolution?)— but it is certainly fine as a prototype. Additionally, its plain and boring device pales compared to the Nokia Lumia 920 or 820, so I can’t see Nokia releasing something that looks exactly like in these photos.

IF this is the real McCoy, you can probably bet that this is a very old reason and that this Nokia phablet device looks very different in its current testing form. So what do you think, just a primitive old prototype that was tossed out or a hint at an upcoming Nokia Lumia phablet device?

With Nokia Lumia 920 selling rather strong so far, it seems that Windows Phone 8 is already starting to look like an early success story. Of course it hasn’t all been perfect. There have also been reports of rebooting issues, battery life and heating problems. It isn’t just the Lumia 920, almost every Windows Phone 8 handset has had a few problems.

Is this normal for a newly launched ecosystem? Of course it is. That said, rumors continue that Microsoft is planning to back up its partner hardware with its own Surface phone. This doesn’t seem that far-fetched, considering they already have a Surface tablet that is still selling alongside partner devices.

Now it seems that a report suggests that Foxconn International Holding is getting orders both from Microsoft and Amazon for devices in 2013. The Microsoft orders are likely for this alleged Surface phone. We don’t know much about the handset, other than it will obviously run on Windows Phone 8.

As for the Amazon device, it will likely be some kind of Kindle Fire smartphone, which has been rumored to exist for a long while now. Either way, Foxconn certainly is finding plenty of work right now. While it is most popularly known for putting together Apple’s iPhone and other iDevices, the Chinese company also produces devices for Nokia, Sony, and many Chinese electronics companies.

Does the idea of the Microsoft Surface phone appeal to you or do you think Microsoft should just stick to supporting existing Windows Phone 8 hardware made by its hardware partners?

When you’re an app developer, you want to make sure that your apps actually work. That usually means getting your hands on test devices, running the app, and ironing out the kinks that inevitably result. Nokia is a little different. It has this program called Remote Device Access (RDA) where developers can remotely access devices so that they can test their apps. It’s quite intriguing, really.

So, why does the Remote Device Access matter to us today? As it turns out, Nokia has listed no fewer than six yet unannounced cell phones on that service and developers can presumably book some time with them. Well, they can book some remote access time with them. The six devices are the Nokia 510, Nokia Belle 805, Nokia Lumia 910, Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 950, and Nokia Lumia 1001.

Now, we know nothing except for the model names, but the names should give us some indication as to what to expect. The Nokia 510, for instance, is likely a budget-level Symbian-powered successor to the Nokia 500. The Nokia Belle 805 could be a cheaper, lower-spec’d version of the Nokia 808 PureView. All of the Lumia devices will likely be powered by Windows Phone 8 and hopefully not just WP7.5. The larger number of the Lumia 1001 may point toward a Windows tablet, but that’s little more than conjecture at this point.
