The Nokia Lumia 920 has been selling well so far, but like the LG Nexus 4 it has had a pretty serious problem that has held it back from reaching its full potential: yep, stock shortage.

While the Nokia Lumia 920′s stock problems aren’t nearly as bad as what we’ve seen with the Google Nexus 4, Nokia admits that they have had a stock issue with the device. The good news is that Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop declared in a Conference Call today that they are working hard to resolve supply issues with the Lumia 920 permanently and move forward with the device globally.

The comes on the heels of recent rumors that Verizon is gearing up for several variants of the Lumia 920 later this year.

So for those that own or wish to own the Lumia 920, did you or are you currently having problems finding the handset in stock? Additionally, are you waiting out for the rumored refresh to the 920 before purchasing the Windows Phone 8-powered device?

With Nokia Lumia sales reaching 4.4 million in Q4, Nokia is looking to continue growing the Lumia line in 2013. For starters, we told you this morning that Nokia is rumored to be preparing up to 6 new devices for the first half of 2013. Soon after that post, even more rumors flooded the web about Nokia’s next offerings.

The Verge has released reports containing information about 2 possible new Nokia devices. The first of the two, codenamed Catwalk, is rumored to be ditching Nokia’s signature polycarbonate body for an aluminum shell. Polycarbonate is a new plastic that was pioneered by Nokia in an effort to bring out the best color in their devices. It will be interesting to see how Nokia shifts away from this.

The second of the rumored devices is the Nokia Laser. This handset is supposedly going to be a high-end variant of the Nokia Lumia 920. Although there is not much known about the Laser, we expect to possibly see Nokia implementing 41MP PureView goodness into more of their products in 2013.

As for release dates, CES 2013 has come and gone. Therefore, Mobile World Congress in late February is a plausible launch ground for at least one of Nokia’s new devices.

What do you think about the trifecta consisting of Verizon, Microsoft, and Nokia? Do you think that they will come out victorious or all go down together? Let us know in the comments below.

Before Windows Phone, the market was plagued with dull, industrialized blacks, greys and whites, so I’m glad that Nokia have stepped back into the scene to add a bit of color to things.

The Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia’s 2012 flagship device has been released in many different colors, but because demand has been so high, getting hold of anything but the black version has been difficult.

If you’ve been looking to get hold of a colored device, you may be happy to hear that Rogers will soon be offering new colors to their inventory of Lumia 920s. In their blog they have said they will be getting stock for the Nokia Windows Phone in red, yellow and white. The new colors will be available both in-store and online within the next couple of weeks, and to celebrate the long-awaited arrival of stock, and to say thank you to all the patient customers, Rogers are hosting a competition to give customers a chance to win a brand new Lumia 920 for themselves.

The competition requires contestants to write a post on Rogers’ official blog explaining what color they are most excited about and what they are hoping to do with a new Lumia 920 in 150 words or less. The comp is up till January 31st, and official rules can be seen on the Rogers blog post.

Are you excited about being able to get your hands on a colored handset from Rogers? Or are you happy enough with the typical black color that is more widely available?

While the Nokia Lumia line might not be selling on the same level as flagship devices from Apple and Samsung, the company has now reported its earnings for 4th quarter 2012-- and they aren't bad at all.

The post Nokia Reports Positive 4th Quarter for Nokia Lumia Smartphones, 4.4 Million Units Sold appeared first on Mobile Magazine.

The Nokia Lumia 920 has certainly seemed to be off to a good start so far, selling out constantly across the globe and in as little as 20 minutes in the Chinese market. We’ve heard that Windows Phone 8 is starting to take off in a way that Windows Phone 7 never did.

You have to wonder though, how much of it is hype, and how much is reality? While the Nokia Lumia line might not be selling on the same level as flagship devices from Apple and Samsung, the company has now reported its earnings for 4th quarter 2012– and they aren’t bad at all. In fact, they are rather impressive.

The company managed to sell 4.4 million Lumia units, versus 2.9 million in the 3rd quarter. Beyond their Windows Phone 8 handsets they also sold 9.3 million of their touch-screen Asha feature phones.

Notably, their aging Symbian smartphones sold 2.2 million units, marking the very first time that Windows Phone sales have been higher than Symbian, which is still reasonably popular in many developing nations across the globe.

Nokia has a tough road ahead of it when it comes to rebuilding itself from its recent years of fiscal decline, but its Windows Phone 8 offerings certainly seem to be off to a good start so far. Personally, this is great news for the mobile industry and for consumers. The more competition, the better.

What do you think of Nokia’s Lumia Windows Phone 8 handsets, do you think they are worthy of all the hype and praise or not?

Nokia provides preliminary financial information for Q4 2012 and preliminary outlook for Q1 2013

Nokia Corporation
Stock exchange release
January 10, 2013 at 15:00 (CET+1)

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today provided preliminary information on certain aspects of its fourth quarter 2012 financial performance and also provided preliminary information on its outlook for the first quarter 2013.

Nokia now estimates that Devices & Services has exceeded expectations and achieved underlying profitability in the fourth quarter 2012.
- Mobile Phones business unit and Lumia portfolio delivered better than expected results; and
- Operating expenses were lower than expected.
- Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin for the fourth quarter 2012 now expected to be between break even and positive 2 percent.

Seasonality and competitive environment are expected to have a negative impact on the first quarter 2013 underlying profitability for Devices & Services, compared to the fourth quarter 2012.

Nokia also estimates that Nokia Siemens Networks has exceeded expectations for the fourth quarter 2012, delivering record underlying profits and a third consecutive quarter of underlying profitability.
- Strong performance in higher margin product categories and geographic regions; and
- Better than expected cost management.
- Nokia Siemens Networks non-IFRS operating margin for the fourth quarter 2012 now expected to be between 13 and 15 percent.

Seasonality is expected to have a negative impact on the first quarter 2013 underlying profitability for Nokia Siemens Networks, compared to the fourth quarter 2012.

Commenting on the preliminary Q4 financial information, Stephen Elop, Nokia CEO, said:
“We are pleased that Q4 2012 was a solid quarter where we exceeded expectations and delivered underlying profitability in Devices & Services and record underlying profitability in Nokia Siemens Networks. We focused on our priorities and as a result we sold a total of 14 million Asha smartphones and Lumia smartphones while managing our costs efficiently, and Nokia Siemens Networks delivered yet another very good quarter.”

Preliminary financial information for the fourth quarter 2012:

Nokia currently estimates that Devices & Services net sales in the fourth quarter 2012 were approximately EUR 3.9 billion, with total device volumes of 86.3 million units.
- Mobile Phones net sales of approximately EUR 2.5 billion, with total volumes of 79.6 million units of which 9.3 million units were Asha full touch smartphones.
- Smart Devices net sales of approximately EUR 1.2 billion, with total volumes of 6.6 million units of which 4.4 million units were Nokia Lumia smartphones.
- Total smartphone volumes of 15.9 million units composed of 9.3 million Asha full touch smartphones, 4.4 million Lumia smartphones and 2.2 million Symbian smartphones.
- Devices & Services Other net sales of approximately EUR 0.2 billion, including a positive impact from non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 50 million.

Nokia currently estimates that Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin for the fourth quarter 2012 was between break even and positive 2 percent, which compares to the previous outlook of approximately negative 6 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. Devices & Services non-IFRS operating margin includes a positive impact from non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 50 million.

During the fourth quarter 2012, multiple factors positively affected Nokia’s Devices & Services businesses to a greater extent than previously expected. Preliminary information indicates that the main factors include:
- Within the Devices & Services business, better than expected financial performance in the Mobile Phones business unit and Lumia smartphones. In addition, Devices & Services recognized non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 50 million; and
- Lower than expected Devices & Services’ operating expenses, partially due to greater than expected cost reductions under the restructuring program.

Nokia currently estimates that Location & Commerce net sales in the fourth quarter 2012 were approximately EUR 0.3 billion and the non-IFRS operating margin was between 13 and 15 percent.

Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks currently estimates that Nokia Siemens Networks net sales in the fourth quarter 2012 were approximately EUR 4.0 billion and the non-IFRS operating margin was between 13 and 15 percent, which compares to the previous outlook of approximately positive 8 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. Nokia Siemens Networks non-IFRS operating margin includes a positive impact from non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 30 million.

During the fourth quarter 2012, multiple factors positively affected Nokia Siemens Networks’ businesses to a greater extent than previously expected. Preliminary information indicates that the main factors include:
- More favorable product and regional mix in Nokia Siemens Networks. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks recognized non-recurring IPR income of approximately EUR 30 million; and
- Better than expected improvement under Nokia Siemens Networks’ restructuring program to reduce operating expenses and production overheads.

Preliminary outlook for the first quarter 2013:

Nokia expects its non-IFRS Devices & Services operating margin in the first quarter 2013 to be approximately negative 2 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. This outlook is based on Nokia’s expectations regarding a number of factors, including:
- competitive industry dynamics continuing to negatively affect the Smart Devices and Mobile Phones business units;
- the first quarter being a seasonally weak quarter;
- consumer demand, particularly for our Lumia and Asha smartphones;
- continued ramp up for our new Lumia smartphones;
- expected cost reductions under Devices & Services’ restructuring program; and
- the macroeconomic environment.

Nokia expects Location & Commerce non-IFRS operating margin in the first quarter 2013 to be negative due to lower recognized revenue from internal sales, which carry higher gross margin, and to a lesser extent by a negative mix shift within external sales.

Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks expect Nokia Siemens Networks non-IFRS operating margin in the first quarter 2013 to be approximately positive 3 percent, plus or minus four percentage points. This outlook is based on Nokia Siemens Networks’ expectations regarding a number of factors, including:
- competitive industry dynamics;
- the first quarter being a seasonally weak quarter;
- product and regional mix;
- expected continued improvement under Nokia Siemens Networks’ restructuring program; and
- the macroeconomic environment.

The Nokia Lumia 820 and 920 were released to the U.S. market just a few months ago now, but as The Wall Street Journal reports, their starting prices are already dropping quite significantly.

The flagship Nokia Lumia 920 was released through AT&T for only $99 when it first hit the market. While that is still what AT&T is selling them for, they can be found on Amazon for as little as $39. The Lumia 822 was originally released through Verizon also for $99. Now Verizon offers the phone for free with a 2 year contract. As for T-Mobile, they are offering the Lumia 810 for free with a 2 year contract.

Dough Dawson, a Nokia spokesman said, “Pricing is always a carrier decision, but holiday season promotions are fairly standard at this time of year”. With 3 major carriers dropping the prices down, does that mean doom and gloom for Windows Phone 8 handsets? Not at all.

The fact is that Windows Phone 8 is still a very new ecosystem, and everyone involved knows this: that means carriers, Microsoft and Nokia. Cheap pricing to begin with was a good start, continued steep discounts during the holiday season are an even better move.

At this point Microsoft and Nokia need to get these handsets into as many hands as they possibly can. It’s hard to say if these low prices will even stick going into January, with the holidays behind us.

Is it possible that lack of sales could be the issue as well? With the Nokia Lumia 920 still selling out in many locations and continuing to have shortages globally– it doesn’t seem that likely of an issue.

Looking at Q2 sales, you see that the Lumia line sold 4 million units. This is rather paltry when compared to Apple’s 35.1 million sales for the iPhone, but let’s not forget a few things here.

First, Q2 was a transitional point that still saw many Windows Phone 7 Lumia devices on the market and had yet to see the more aggressive marketing and pricing sales from the Windows Phone 8 line.

Second, the iPhone line is very established and highly popular at the moment. For a new ecosystem, 4 million out of nowhere is actually pretty impressive, especially with the Lumia line reportedly having low stock available to begin with. At this point it is best to reserve judgement on how well the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone 8 line is doing. We should know more going forward into 2013, though.

What are your thoughts on the Nokia Lumia WP8 line? Do you have one, and if so, do you like it? How do you feel it compares to other phones in its class?

A new photo has now hit the net of what appears to be a massive Galaxy Note-sized Nokia smartphone. The prototype is known as the “Juggernaut Semaphore” and in a setting screen photo reveals that it is running on an up-to-date Snapdragon S4 chipset.

So what is this thing exactly? It could easily be an earlier prototype device that was completely canned, especially judging by the use of the older “Windows Phone 7” logo on the phone’s front. That said, the presence of a Family Room tile indicates this isn’t Windows Phone 7.8— this is clearly Windows Phone 8 onboard.

The other option is that this is a prototype that is an experiment to see how a larger-sized Nokia phablet would look and feel.

How do we know that this isn’t going to be a commercial device in its current form? Besides the left edge that reads “property of Nokia not for sale”, the biggest indicator is the screen’s resolution. A measely 480×800 is probably good enough for an experimental build to test the viability of phablet-sized devices.

It isn’t good enough to be a real device (unless it is targeted at those that need a big screen for seeing, but don’t need a good resolution?)— but it is certainly fine as a prototype. Additionally, its plain and boring device pales compared to the Nokia Lumia 920 or 820, so I can’t see Nokia releasing something that looks exactly like in these photos.

IF this is the real McCoy, you can probably bet that this is a very old reason and that this Nokia phablet device looks very different in its current testing form. So what do you think, just a primitive old prototype that was tossed out or a hint at an upcoming Nokia Lumia phablet device?

With 2012 nearly over, we love taking a look back at some of the most innovative mobile technologies making their way into the “mainstream” this year.

Keep in mind that most of these innovations actually started years ago, but they make this year’s list simply because they went mainstream or showed up for the first time in a high-demand flagship device.

I am not going to number this as a “countdown of the best”, because each of these technologies bring new things to the mobile world and how important they are is really a matter of opinion.

This is by no means a definitive list; we are also focusing on technologies in phones and tablets, not the devices themselves, though several hot items like the iPad, Nokia Lumia 920 and LG Nexus 4 certainly have technology present that makes this list.

Without further ado, let’s get started.

Nokia glove capable screen

While special “texting” gloves have existed for a while now, Nokia’s Lumia 920 recently introduced a Synaptics ClearPad Series 3 sensor which allows you to use just about any type of glove without a problem.

Nokia calls this “Super Sensitive Touch”. While the Lumia 920 is the only device to utilize this tech right now, you can bet that it will become more mainstream as time passes.

Wireless Charging

Again, wireless charging is nothing new. We’ve seen this kind of technology for years now, but recently the Nokia Lumia 920 and LG Nexus 4 brought this technology to the forefront.

More and more handset makers are preparing devices that utilize the ability to work out-of-the-box with wireless charging technology.

Nokia’s 808 PureView Camera

The Nokia 808 Pureview is a bit of a strange device, in that it runs on the outdated Symbian OS with modest specs, except for its extremely impressive camera.

The Pureview camera on the 808 has a 41MP sensor (for a maxium output of 38MP) and managed to use cutting edge technology such a image stabilization and more.

1080p Smartphone Display

While the first U.S. smartphone to get a 1080p display is the HTC Droid DNA, we’ve seen quite a bit from this category this year.

From Sony to Samsung, rumors exist that 1080p is on its way. Oppo and several others are also getting involved in this technology. In many ways, 1080p smartphone displays won’t really take off until 2013 but their emergence is significant enough to add to this list.

Lumia 920 ‘fast’ screen technology

The 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ screen found on the Nokia Lumia 920 is said to have pushed the ‘speed’ of a display to new limits.

In order to provide a faster, crisper and less blurry screen experience, Nokia boosted the voltage for each LCD pixel, dropping the response time down from the usual 16.7ms to an impressive 9ms. According to Nokia, the complete transition speeds are around 23ms.

Retina and Higher End Resolution Displays in Tablets

While the retina display branding is much older than 2012, this marked the year that Apple first brought the technology over to the iPad. With a 2048×1536 display, Apple pushed tablet resolution to new levels.

Taking tablet displays even further, Samsung and Google recently unveiled the Nexus 10, which had a stunning 2560 x 1600 display.

NFC Technology

Okay, NFC is again nothing new for 2012. Devices like many Blackberry smartphones have had the technology for a while now, but 2012 has seen NFC arrive on just about every midrange or higher phone on the market.

Apple might be waiting until 2013 to get in on the NFC action, but Android, Blackberry and Windows Phone have all made the jump into a glorious near field communicating future.

What makes NFC so important is that it can speed up payments, transfer files on the fly and so much more.

Quad-core processors become commonplace

The year 2011 saw the first quad-core tablets, but that’s about as far as it went. Nowadays many flagship Android devices have made the jump towards quad-core power and just about every midrange or higher Android tablet on the market seems to have quad-core onboard.

The jump in processing means better gaming capabilities and overall speed improvements. Our phones and tablets are quickly catching up to what many entry-level PCs are capable of.

Speech Recognition Continues to Expand

Siri has been around for a while now, but speech tech has considerably evolved in 2012 with technologies like Google Now making its way to Jelly Bean. Even Chrome is said to be getting Google Now-like features. The age of speech interaction and powerful digital asistants is just getting started and while maybe not completely mainstream this year, it is certainly getting that way.

With the recent launch of Windows Phone 8, Nokia has seen a great deal of initial success with the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. In order to keep the ball rolling forward, the company has also now announced a third member to its Windows Phone 8 family, the Lumia 620.

As you might have guessed, the Nokia Lumia 620 is a budget phone with a suggested price of around $250 without contract. Don’t let the low price or word “budget phone” fool you, though.

Nokia’s 620 is still quite a powerful little device with a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus dual-core processor, 8GB storage, 7GB free SkyDrive cloud storage, NFC, 5MP back cam, VGA front cam and 512MB of RAM.

The biggest weakness spec-wise is the screen, which has just a 800×480 resolution and is just 3.8-inches. Still, some people like smaller screens believe it or not, and the resolution might not matter that much to everyone.

Another unique feature for the Nokia Lumia 620 is that it will come in wide range of color “shells” that can be fully interchanged, meaning you can constantly make your phone look very different. Colors include lime green, orange, magenta, yellow, cyan, white and black– though not all markets will get the full range of colors.

Now for the bad news for those of us in the United States. The Nokia 620 will first in the Asia-Pacific region, then the Middle East and Africa from January 2013. Shortly after, Canada and Europe will see the phone as well, but there is currently no official mention of the device coming to the United States.

Does that mean that the United States won’t see it? Hard to say for sure. It is coming to Canada, so it is certainly possible that a US launch will eventually be announced as well. What do you think of the Nokia Lumia 620, would you consider purchasing it if it rolls around to a market near you?

Two of the hottest smartphones out there right now are the Nokia Lumia 920 and LG Nexus 4, and both are currently hard to find at retailers as a direct result.

If you are are someone just looking for a new smartphone and really don’t have you heart set on a particular ecosystem, how do you know what you should get? Preference certainly comes down to it, but both Windows Phone 8 and Android have their strong points, same goes for the Lumia 920 versus the Nexus 4.

Considering how different these two phones really are, this isn’t at all a direct comparison or an article that is declaring one better than the other. Merely, let’s point out what each phone offers and why you should consider buying it.

LG Nexus 4

The LG Nexus 4 is a solid smartphone with a pure Android 4.2 experience, that means you don’t get all the bulk that comes with carrier and vendor-loaded software. The hardware in the LG Nexus 4 is equally impressive, especially when you consider that it starts at just $299 with no contract required.

The LG Nexus 4 has a 4.7-inch IPS 1280×768 display with 320ppi, a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. There might not be LTE, but there is at least HSPA+ speeds. You’ll also find an 8MP camera, NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and wireless charging. As for storage, there is just 8GB or 16GB.

Honestly, the LG Nexus 4 is a near-perfect device from a hardware standpoint at a killer price. Is it perfect? No, there have been reports of a few problems, but again all new phones seem to have launch issues.

Why would you want to consider the LG Nexus 4?

You want the Android ecosystem and the 700,000+ apps supported by it.

You want a pure Android experience, no bloat.

If you plan to use prepaid, or want to avoid contracts, the LG Nexus 4 is hard to beat.

Nokia Lumia 920

Again, a full comparison here isn’t possible simply because Windows Phone 8 and Android are two very different animals. Is one OS better than the other? Depends on who you ask, but honestly they are both quite capable smartphone operating systems.

The Nokia Lumia 920 has a slightly smaller screen at 4.5-inches, but at the same time it is touted as the “fastest display” on the market right now. As for the rest of the specs, you get a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB RAM, an 8.7MP PureView camera, 32GB storage, LTE, Wi-Fi, GPS, NFC and Bluetooth. There is also a unique feature that is said to allow the Lumia 920 to work while wearing gloves.

Both the Lumia 920 and Nexus 4 have wireless charging options as well.

On paper, the quad-core power and 2GB of RAM found in the LG Nexus 4 certainly beats out what the Nokia Lumia 920 is bringing to the table. Still, you have to realize that different operating systems have different RAM/processor demands. Supposedly Windows Phone 8 has been optimized to the point you won’t hardly tell the difference, but if you truly are all about speed– you might want a quad-core Android device. Still, I had the opportunity to briefly play with a Nokia Lumia 920 recently and found it to be very fluid and responsive, so take that how you will.

A major strong point for the Nokia Lumia 920 is that it has an excellent camera with an optical image stabilizer and is honestly much sharper than what the Nexus 4 has to offer.

Like the LG Nexus 4, the Nokia Lumia 920 is a solid phone, though it to had a few problems at launch. Why should you consider a Windows Phone 8-based Nokia Lumia 920?

For those in the US, the Lumia 920 is great if you have good AT&T coverage.

You want a new OS with customizable tiles that is clearly different.

The idea of being an early adopter and having less app selection doesn’t bother you.

You are a fan of Nokia’s hardware.

You want LTE speeds, something not offered by the LG Nexus 4.

Conclusion

Honestly, this all boils down to three things: operating system, pricing and carrier coverage. Both of these phones are highly innovative and solid. I would be more than happy using either of these as my daily driver.

The LG Nexus 4 has set a new bar for pricing, and Android is a flexible operating system with a highly established ecosystem. As for the Nokia Lumia 920, it has an equally stunning design, a unique OS that is like nothing else on the market right now (expect for Windows 8 and RT), and has tight integration with Office and other Microsoft products.

Which device would you recommend? The Nexus 4 or the Lumia 920? Do you have any other reasons to consider getting one phone or platform over the other that we didn’t mention?

While this probably won’t surprise too many people out there, a new study indicates that the Nokia Lumia 920 is hands-down the most popular Windows Phone 8 smartphone so far.

The mobile ad company Ad Duplex was behind the study. The firm compiled an infographic of Windows Phone market share by monitoring Windows Phone apps that use the AdDuplex software development kit. How accurate is this? Probably debatable, but it should still give us a reasonable picture of what phones currently seem to be in use the most.

The results showed that when compared to legacy Windows Phone devices, Windows Phone 8 marketshare is still pretty puny, though that’s not exactly shocking.

When compared to all Windows Phone devices, the Nokia Lumia 920 ranks in sixth place, and the Nokia Lumia 710 holds supreme with 24 percent of the market. As for WP8 handsets, the Nokia Lumia 920 is severely beating the HTC 8X so far, with the 8x ranking as the 20th most widely used Windows Phone device.

It’s also worth noting that 76% of all Windows Phone 7 devices in use are by Nokia, while 80% of Windows Phone 8 devices are Nokia phones.

What do you think of the current Windows Phone handsets out there? Like what Nokia has to offer, or are you swayed by HTC’s 8x and 8s handsets?
