Imagine your delight if you wake up on Christmas morning and discover there’s a special gift waiting for you under the tree. You unravel the wrapping paper and discover it’s a Nintendo 3DS! You’re happier than the Nintendo 64 kid, until you actually open the box and discover that it’s filled with rocks and tissue paper. That’s even worse than a lump of coal.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened to a poor boy from Talladega County in Alabama. His well-meaning mother went to Wal-Mart to buy the portable gaming system for her son, but she didn’t know that the box didn’t contain a 3DS at all. Scam artists had apparently bought the 3DS, kept the system itself, but returned the box full of rocks and tissue paper to simulate the missing weight. The Wal-Mart staff never checked the box when processing the return and the faux 3DS ended up on the shelf for the Talladega mom.

This isn’t the first time that something like this has happened. There is a similar scam going around where people are returning iPad boxes filled with paper notepads. I’ve also heard of someone returning a flat panel HDTV with an oven door in its place instead. The lesson here for retail management, as if it weren’t obvious enough, is that their employees should really be checking those returns before refunding the money.

On the bright side, the Talladega Wal-Mart did give the mother a replacement 3DS after she told them what had happened, but I think that poor boy isn’t exactly feeling great about that whole experience.

Nintendo has a habit of releasing multiple versions of the same console, incrementally improving it in some way with each iteration. The Game Boy Advance paved the way for the Game Boy Advance SP. The Nintendo DS paved the way for the DS Lite. And now, Nintendo is doing the same with the 3DS.

The original Nintendo 3DS hasn’t been quite as big a hit as Nintendo had hoped, so they’re coming forward with a supersized version called the Nintendo 3DS XL. This is essentially the same thing that they did by following the Nintendo DSi with the Nintendo DSi XL. The bigger version of the 3DS essentially has the same guts, but it gets 90% bigger screens for 18% more money.

Set to retail for $199.99 when it ships August 19, the Nintendo 3DS XL will have a 4.88-inch display on top and a 4.18-inch touchscreen below. It still has the three cameras (two in the back for 3D), just the one analog stick (or analog “slider,” if you prefer), and the same Wi-Fi connectivity. Is it worth the $30 premium over the regular smaller 3DS that you already didn’t buy?

Check out the official Nintendo Direct video announcing the 3DS XL, featuring Reggie Fils-Aime himself, on the Nintendo website.

Uh oh. Having recently taken advantage of the early price drop at Costco, I’m particularly interested in these findings. As it turns out, the Nintendo 3DS may have some problems. The good news is that these problems aren’t really related to the glasses-free 3D screen. Instead, they have to do with the age-old directional pad.

You would think that Nintendo, the company that effectively invented the D-pad nearly 30 years ago without making any monumental changes since then, would have perfected this technology. Unfortunately, we’re hearing that the buttons on the D-pad are prone to “warping.” Taking a look around the Internet, you’ll find many photos of the d-pad starting to have its paint peel or bubble up.

So, it’s the paint. It’s not like the d-pad is any less effective and, for the majority of games on the 3DS, you’re not really using the D-pad anyhow. The analog stick above it seems fine and you’ll likely be using that more anyhow… unfortunately, we’re also hearing about a “black screen of death” issue where the console crashes and demands a restart.

For Nintendo, this just adds salt to the wounds. Sales aren’t what they expected (hence the price drop), Wii sales are slumping, and more people are turning to smartphone gaming than dedicated handhelds like the 3DS.

There’s no denying that the Nintendo 3DS is one innovative piece of gaming hardware. Glasses-free 3D for the masses? That’s pretty cool. Unfortunately, at $250, it was just too expensive. Nintendo has now recognized that and they’re cutting the MSRP down to a more affordable $169.99. That’s better, but is it good enough?

The new price is set to take effect on August 12, but where does that leave the people who already bought the system? They’ll feel ripped off, right? Maybe not. Nintendo is offering 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop, so long as they log into the eShop once before midnight eastern time on August 11. That consists of 10 GBA and 10 NES Virtual Console titles. It’s up to you to decide whether those 20 games are worth $80 to you.

I’ve wanted a Nintendo 3DS since I’ve always been a Nintendo fanboy, but I’m having a harder time justifying the purchase. That said, I spotted the 3DS on sale for $200 in the Best Buy flyer. So, if I pick that up today, I can still get those 20 “free” games for an effective price of $30. I’d want to know what games they were before taking the plunge, though, since the NES and GBA are filled with both gems and bombs.

The Nintendo 3DS isn’t the only one to do the glasses-free 3D dance. We’ve already seen the LG Optimus 3D, for instance, and this crowd is getting joined by the new Brando Gadmei P83 3D PMP too.

Brando is normally a brand I associate with random off-shore knockoffs and obscure accessories, but this is just showing that 3D is slowly but surely making a push into the mainstream. Let’s be clear: the Gadmei P83 is not really a tablet device. It’s a personal media player (PMP) with an 8-inch 1280×768 pixel display that happens to support 3D without glasses.

While there is a mere 4GB of on-board storage, you can load up your homemade 3D photos and movies through the available USB port and SD card slot. For now, it’s still a bit of a novelty and I’m not completely sold on the experience, but the Brando Gadmei P83 3D PMP isn’t terribly expensive at $179 either. If they tossed in some tablet functionality, possibly through Android, it might be a more interesting proposition, especially if they can keep the price point where it is.

Let's say that you decide to buy one of the many Rock Band games for your Xbox 360, but you're not at all interested in the plastic instruments. By the same accord, let's say that you can play Dance Central for Kinect by tapping the buttons on a Street Fighter arcade stick. Again, what's the point?

Let’s put this into perspective. Let’s say that you decide to buy one of the many Rock Band games for your Xbox 360, but you’re not at all interested in the plastic instruments. So, you figure out a way to play Rock Band using a regular Xbox 360 controller. What’s the point? By the same accord, let’s say that you can play Dance Central for Kinect by tapping the buttons on a Street Fighter arcade stick. Again, what’s the point?

And that’s kind of where we leave ourselves with today’s announcement from Nintendo. The 3DS is set to hit American shores this weekend, introducing glasses-free 3D to the portable gaming market. The trouble is that not everyone can see the 3D-ness, forcing them to put that slider all the way down to 2D for the games to make any sense.

So, what does Nintendo do? Hideki Konno, the Nintendo 3DS producer, says that they are “moving away from any stance that says if you don’t see the 3-D functionality, you can’t play the game.” What this means is that the 3D is even more of an aesthtetic gimmick, rather than an integral part of the game. You don’t need 3D to solve the in-game puzzles, because the games don’t rely on that perspective.

I guess this is both good and bad. In my brief experience with a 3DS demo, I started to suffer eye strain and a mild headache after only a few minutes of Pilotwings Resort. If I needed the 3D to be on all the time to play the game at all, I don’t think I could ever really play a 3DS… but that’s like buying the Wii just so you can play Mario Kart with a GameCube controller.

When the Nintendo 3DS hits our shores this weekend, you’ll find that the retail box includes six augmented reality (AR) cards. These paper cards can be used to interact with the different AR games that are available on the system, but it sucks to have to carry them around with you. So, why not load them on your phone instead?

That’s exactly the idea behind the app by Andrew Wilson. He has effectively digitized the six AR cards that come bundled with the console, plunking them onto any Google Android device. When you’re on the road, you’d assume that you have your smartphone with you. Whip it out, show the Kirby AR card image, and you’ve got yourself an augmented reality version of the pink sucker. Tada!

The good news is that the app is free. The bad news is that there are reports of its spontaneously crashing and it’s possible that Nintendo could come in and swipe it off the market with trademark infringement accusations. You know how you can get around that? Take a picture of the card with your phone, ensuring that there are no shadows and you get the whole card, and it should work with the 3DS too.

This is starting to sound more and more like the popular thing to do to combat piracy, so I guess it should come as little surprise that Nintendo is starting to take on a similar tactic for its Nintendo 3DS.

Apparently, if Nintendo is able to detect that a 3DS is using “equipment which is illegal or unapproved by Nintendo,” it’s going to send out a system update that makes the system non-bootable. Similarly, if they detect that you “do customisation which is unapproved by Nintendo,” the company might do the same.

We all know this has to do with the flash cartridges where people load up their downloaded ROMs and play commercial games for free (illegally). Considering that we’ve seen Xbox 360s banned from Xbox Live and Wii firmware updates that kill previously functional mods, the porbable gamer really is no exception.

In this way, I don’t think it’s a “kill switch,” in the strictest sense. Instead, it sounds like it’s more of the same with mod-killing firware updates. Not surprisingly, Nintendo says that it can “not discuss product security details.”

Looks like Samsung hasn’t quite developed a case of “me too” just yet. In fact, it’s doing the complete opposite, saying that it hasn’t “seen a need for 3D on mobiles as of yet.” Clearly, this is a shot aimed directly at their neighbors at LG.

After all, the LG Optimus 3D is the only phone announced thus far that is going to sport a 3D display. Samsung is quick to point out that they “are world leaders in 3D,” but they “don’t see [3D] is needed yet” given the trade off “when it comes to thickness and pocketability.”

TechRadar reports Samsung Mobile UK product management head Jim Powell did give the company a way out though, saying that if the innovation works (and the public seems interested), Samsung will offer a “response” quickly. For now, I’m inclined to agree with Samsung. As innovative and novel as the idea may be (the only other glasses-free 3D handheld that I can think of is the Nintendo 3DS), I think it’s just that: a novelty.

Then again, they did say the same thing about the waggle-tastic controls on the Wii when that was first revealed too. Look at where we are with motion gaming now.

It looks like the Nintendo 3DS has started a craze toward glasses-free 3D. Or at least it has added substantially to it. Following in those eye-popping footsteps is the LG Optimus 3D, which is set to be unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2011 later this month.

LG is touting the device as the world’s first full 3D smartphone. This not includes the glasses-free 3D display, which will presumably use similar stereoscopic tech as the 3DS, but also a dual-lens camera in the back for taking 3D pictures (and probably videos too).

The leaked photo shown here, which comes to us by way of Phandroid, isn’t really confirmed, but it’s a reasonable assumption for what the final product will look like.

I’m still not really sold on this whole 3D thing just yet and I imagine the 3D creation with the Optimus 3D won’t be as good as Avatar (just like how most cameraphones aren’t as good as “real” cameras”), but this is a bold leap. Life’s good? We’ll find out soon enough. So much for the Optimus 2X and Optimus Black, eh?
