TonePrint is an app that was previously released for iOS and now recently just launched for Android here at NAMM. What the app does is uploads new guitar effects to your pedal in the same way a fax sends data to another fax machine. Once you pick the effect you want, like Yogi’s ‘Shake’ TonePrint for Shaker Vibrato, simply place the speaker of your device over the pickup of your guitar, the pickup listens to the fax sound, then transmits the data to the pedal which stores the new code. Now you’re ready to jam!

TonePrint pedals, made by TC Electronics, run for about $130 a pop.

[Android Market, iTunes]

There is a great video presented by Moog’s Marc Doty, Archive and Education Specialist for the Bob Moog Foundation on the new minitaur. But when at NAMM we couldn’t resist to take another look and feel the electronic thunder vibrate through our body.

Just a quick rundown on the specs, the minitaur is Minitaur is an 8.5″ x 5.25″ analog bass synthesizer, it’s got the classic one knob per function design, has joined up with the Taurus family and is shipping this spring for $679 from moog.

i-Tab has been at it for several years now, we saw the company first announce their portable guitar tab and songbook device back in 2010. At NAMM I had the opportunity to speak with i-tab CEO Andy Hirst who gave me the rundown. It’s been a hellish 2 years trying to secure the right hardware partner and work out the glitches, i’m told its still shipping soon. It looks like the companies Android guitar tab software will be out first, as it’s set to be released within the next couple weeks. The iOS version is still being hammered back and forth with Apple, so that could be months away. I know what you’re thinking, we’ve heard it before, but really, i-Tab is on the way guys.

i-Tab is also in talks with large device manufacturers who will make their tabs available as bundled software to target a younger audience. Musicians can get involved too as the company is going to pay you to submit tabs to their tab store, the program is called tabs4cash. End users can buy tabs at .40 a pop.

Now since i’m going to be buying an acoustic guitar in the next couple days, I have decided to hold out on learning until Andy sends an i-tab my way. I will document the process and try to learn strictly from the i-tab alone, then the rest of you out there on the fence about learning guitar can see for yourself if its worth taking the plunge. The i-tab to me looks a little small and might be difficult to see the chords, but I will have to wait and see. The i-tab tablet should address that concern since the larger screen definitely helps.

Alesis released their new AmpDock yesterday at NAMM 2012, we got to get a first hand look at its features and specs. The AmpDock supports both the iPad and iPad 2, so we're assuming it will work with the iPad 3 when that is released too as it looks like their's quite a bit of play in the mounting area for variations in design.

Although it looks a little cheap with the plastic foot pedal and plastic knobs, the ability to turn into any amplifier simply by loading up an app in your iPad is quite special. Expect it July or late Q2 for $300.
