Even though Nokia continues to be the largest cell phone maker in the world, it seems to be constantly lagging behind in the design department. That is further epitomized by the new Nokia X5 that was announced today.

It takes on that strange square shape that seems to be popping up with a few other manufacturers too. You get a landscape oriented display and the usual set of buttons underneath, but the QWERTY keyboard is accessed via the vertical slider.

The visual styling, according to Nokia, might remind you “of a MiniDisc player.” This is further demonstrated by the musical focus of the X-series handsets, including access to Ovi Music and Comes with Music.

Other features include the 5MP camera, LED flash, 200MB onboard memory, microSD card slot (a 2-gigger is included), social networking integration, and IM and webmail services. Expect the X5 to ship to Indonesia in Q3 for about 165 Euro.

You want to hang with the coolest kids on the block, but you don’t really have the budget to show for it? Maybe you just want to get in on some popular features without having to break the bank? While you could certainly turn your attention to something like the LG Eve, you can go even cheaper with the LG GS200. This is one of the most affordable new phones on the market.

Since it hits up the lower end of the pricing scale, the features and styling are pretty much there to match that. It’s a rather basic-looking bar phone with the usual numeric keypad and relatively small display, but you do get an attractive black-and-red color scheme.

Going through the features, the LG GS200 is focused mostly on music enjoyment. In addition to using a headset, you can opt instead to use the external speaker for a “rich and loud” sound. Other highlights include FM radio, FM recording, Bluetooth, 1.3MP cam, and microSD expansion.

The LG GS200 is currently on sale in Russia for 3,990 rubles. That works out to about $130 and the assumption is that this is a contract-free price.

Remember when Motorola was the hottest kid on the block? Remember when everyone wanted the Zack Morris, then the StarTAC, then the RAZR? Those days are behind them and the big Moto needs to do something to recapture our interest. And they’re trying to do it in Korea with the Motorola ROKR ZN50.

As you can tell from the ROKR designation, this phone is very much meant to be a music-oriented phone, but it does a lot more than bust out your collection of Ashlee Simpson and Fall Out Boy. You’ll notice that it has a massive 3.2-inch touchscreen display, not unlike what we’ve seen with the MOTOMING.

Instead of relying simply on the touchscreen for everything, however, this phone also comes with a slide-out numeric keypad. It’s not QWERTY, but at least you can take advantage of some T9 action for your texting.

The rest of the feature set is pretty impressive too. There’s a 3.2 megapixel camera, SRS WOW HD sound with equalizer, Bluetooth 2.0, GPS, HSDPA 7.2, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a T-DMB TV tuner. It’s also got a widget-based UI.

Too bad this is for Korea’s eyes only. Will Moto be bringing something similar to our circles?
