We heard rumors and now we have confirmation. Motorola has decided to resurrect its RAZR moniker and apply it to a brand new smartphone. What you see here is the Motorola Droid RAZR, a device that they tout is among the thinnest in the world.

On the surface, this will look much like any other Android smartphone out there. The specs include a dual core 1.2GHz processor, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED advanced qHD display, 1GB RAM, 8MP rear camera with 1080p video support, 4G LTE support, and Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. The 1780mAh battery is said to be good for 12.5 hours of 3G talk time and 8.9 hours of video playback. And yes, it is the first smartphone capable of streaming Netflix in HD.

Just as the original RAZR was meant to be a fashion statement as much as a functional piece of technology, its smarter counterpart is much the same. Motorola has fashioned this phone with diamond-cut aluminium accents, stainless steel core, and laser-cut woven Kevlar fiber, along with Gorilla Glass for added protection. There’s also an iCloud fighter called MotoCast that will sync your multimedia on your PC.

In the United States, they’ll be selling it as the Droid RAZR through Verizon and that kicks off next month for $299 on a two-year contract. The rest of the world will refer to the phone simply as the Motorola RAZR, making things terribly confusing when comparing this phone with the original thin flip phone. Rogers Wireless hasn’t announced pricing, but they’re saying they’ll have the phone “in time for the holidays.”

Motorola RAZR: Put the Impossible in your Pocket. Again.

Head-turning design and life-changing features, available only at Rogers
CALGARY – OCTOBER 18, 2011 – Say hello to the jaw-dropping new Motorola RAZRTM, brought to you by the brains at Motorola Mobility Canada and available exclusively at Rogers Communications. Impossibly thin and lightweight, this smartphone is loaded with sexy curves. Its sculpted glass face, diamond-cut aluminum accents and hyper-saturated 4.3” Super AMOLED Advanced display are museum-worthy industrial design, while its Kevlar® fiber (yes, that Kevlar) and Corning® Gorilla® Glass screen with splash-guard coating, make this work of art a force to be reckoned with.

While they’re still dazzled by the outside, hit them with what’s inside. A cool 1GB of RAM hooks up with that dual-core processor and AndroidTM 2.3.5 to get you a lightning-fast user interface and the power to multi-task like never before. Rock your playlists while you check your email, breeze through photos – all at the same time, all without delay. Motorola RAZR comes preloaded with the Motorola MotoCast™ app1, giving you the power to stream or download content from your PC straight to your device so your personal content is always within reach. Watch movies on a screen that sports a wider range of colours than most LCD HDTVs. And when you’re tired of watching (as if), use the cinematic-quality front-facing 720p video camera and 8MP rear-facing camera with even sharper 1080p HD video capture to create your own movies – and turn your life into art without breaking a sweat.

“The original Motorola RAZR turned a functional necessity into an object of desire. Now we’ve done it again by creating an impossibly thin smartphone – a head-turning design with the power to carry your life with you,” says Michelle Digulla, president, Motorola Mobility Canada. “We partnered with Rogers to launch the original RAZR, and we know Rogers customers will be lining up to be the first to have the next generation RAZR in their pocket.”

“Our customers are constantly looking for the most innovative smartphones and we are thrilled to be able to offer them the new Motorola RAZR,” says Raj Doshi, vice-president of Mobile Product Management, Rogers Communications Inc. “We’re pleased to be the first to bring this iconic brand to our customers and further extend our leadership as the carrier with the best Android selection in Canada.”

Work smart, not hard

Government-grade encryption protects your email, contacts and calendar so you are business ready. Even your strict IT manager will be impressed. Work smart with Smart Actions – a preloaded app on Motorola RAZR that lets you automate everyday tasks and enable better battery life. Smart Actions can turn down the ringer when you step into work, change the Bluetooth and GPS settings when you get home to save battery, or send a text to someone if you miss their call – letting you focus more on what’s actually important.

And Motorola RAZR’s no slouch with physical safety either. It’s armed with Corning® Gorilla® glass (to protect against surface scratches) and a water repellent coating, even on the electrical boards inside. Because a museum-quality device demands museum-quality protection.

Accessories that bring a whole new universe to life
We’ve got the tools and toys to turn the world’s sexiest smartphone into a mobile cloud computing powerhouse, an HD media hub, and a navigation device (not to mention a killer stereo system).

Motorola RAZR is powerful on its own, no doubt, but when combined with one of Motorola’s accessories (sold separately), you unleash a world of possibilities. Use the new Motorola LapdockTM 500 Pro or smaller LapdockTM 100 to let loose Motorola’s revolutionary webtop application, giving you the power to edit documents and browse the Web with a full Firefox browser – all while powering the device. Or, plug it into the HD Dock or HD Station to connect to your HDTV, speakers and other peripherals for large-screen entertainment. You can also connect a navigation dock for GPS and directions, battery pack for extra life, a keyboard with Bluetooth® technology for efficient typing, and the elegantly designed, almost-invisible Motorola ELITE SLIVER headset for discrete, hands-free talking. Control your content and your calls, play basic games and browse the web from the comfort of your couch with the Smart Controller. You’ll have the brains, brawn and beauty to make the impossible possible. Again.

Motorola RAZR is coming exclusively to Rogers Communications customers in time for the holidays. For more information visit motorola.ca.

The first Motorola Droid, which was also sold in a slightly altered version as the Motorola Milestone, was generally well received. It offered a powerful Android experience, came with a great slide-out keyboard, and had some decent hardware. Now that the Droid 3 has officially hit store shelves, you might want to buy it too… but should you wait?

JR Raphael of Computer World is a little hesitant and for good reason. Several good reasons, actually. While the hardware itself is pretty decent, there are a few things just over the horizon that you might want to wait for. For starters, 4G LTE is already out there for Verizon, but the Droid 3 doesn’t rock it. Strike one.

Quad core superphones are almost here and this phone is still doing the dual core thing. It also only has 512MB of RAM, compared to the full gig that a lot of smartphones are getting now too. That’s arguably strike two, depending on how much performance you want to get.

And then there’s MOTOBLUR. You may or may not be a fan of Motorola’s custom skin, but it has been demonstrated to delay the pushing out of Android version updates. If you must have the newest Android OS, getting a Moto might not be so good. This is especially true with Ice Cream Sandwich around the corner. Is that strike three? I don’t know. That’s up to you to decide.

So, you may have already seen that teaser video released to promote the upcoming Motorola DROID X with Verizon Wireless. You probably assumed that it shows nothing more than a name. Well, if you look closely, there’s more to it. Some very keen eyes have broken down the video and revealed quite a few more details regarding the DROID X smartphone. For instance, the launch date is clearly displayed as 07.2010, but during the “warping” sequence, we can see 07.02.2010, revealing a July 2 launch date.

It could be just a distortion artifact rather than an Easter egg, but it looks pretty convincing. And there’s even more to be found too. Even keener eyes looked into the cyborg eye in the teaser video to see the reflection of several critical pieces of information.

During those first seven seconds or so, we can see mentions of a 4.3-inch WVGA screen, “buddy” icons, the Droid logo, HDMI output, and an 8MP camera. It’s hard to make out and you’ll need to pause and blow up, but they’re there.

Considering how soon July 2nd is, I’m surprised we have yet to see an official press shot of the DROID X. What do you think it’ll be like? This could just be a blur effect duplicating the 2010, but who knows.

Extending this level of protection to a few new handsets today, OtterBox announced that it now has protective cases for the Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, Palm Pre Plus, Palm Pixi, and Palm Pixi Plus. These will protect them from "scatches, bump, shock and everyday wear."

If you’re looking for the ultimate protection for all of your technological gear, you can’t really go wrong by choosing a protective case from the good people at OtterBox. People have done tests where they threw these cases against walls and drove over them with SUVs, only to reveal that the product remains largely unscathed.

Extending this level of protection to a few new handsets today, OtterBox announced that it now has protective cases for the Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, Palm Pre Plus, Palm Pixi, and Palm Pixi Plus. These will protect them from “scatches, bump, shock and everyday wear.”

On the Motorola Droid side of the equation, you can expect the Commuter Series from OtterBox. The case is comprised of three sleek layers and the case allows for complete interaction with the phone’s core features: touchscreen, camera, microphone, and volume keys. The micro USB port and headphone jack are protected with silicone plugs.

In addition to the Commuter Series, Palm devices also get outfitted with OtterBox cases from the Tandem Series and the Impact Series. The former is for the Palm Pre and Palm Pre Plus. It comes in two pieces to allow for the best access and fit. The latter is for the Palm Pixi and Pixi Plus. It is a silicone skin designed to absorb impact and dissipate shock away from the device.

Motorola Milestone from Telus Mobility - Photo: Michael Kwan

It may have taken a little time to find its legs, but the Google Android platform is really starting to take off. One of the hottest handsets to feature this operating system is the Motorola Milestone, available now through Telus Mobility.

In many ways, you could say that it’s the same as the Motorola Droid through Verizon, but you don’t get the MOTOBLUR user interface, you would have to wait for the Motorola Backflip in that case. The Milestone is configured to use the Telus 3G+ network so its very fast. I was really excited to take this phone out for a test drive and it largely delivers on its promises.

In a nutshell, you get three personalized home screens (that can be loaded with apps and widgets), a 3.7″ capacitive multitouch display, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 5MP camera, and the full suite of on-device Google services.

Motorola did not skimp on its choice of materials as the Milestone feels very solid in your hands. The feature set is very robust and the Android platform has plenty to offer. The web browser is fantastic and the haptic feedback is a plus.

This phone is certainly not without its shortcomings, of course. The sliding mechanism is not spring-loaded, so you have to firmly slide the display over manually. I’m also not entirely pleased with the hardware keyboard. Similar to the droid, the keys are too flush, there isn’t enough key travel, and I experienced far too many typos.

The battery cover is much harder to remove than it should be and it’s really unfortunate that you have to remove the battery to get at the microSD slot, but you should be used to that by now if your a Motorola user. Otherwise, performance is more than adequate and Android Market has lots to offer. Even YouTube performance wasn’t too shabby at all.

The Motorola Milestone is $199.99 on a three-year contract with Telus. Check out the video review and photo gallery below for a closer look at this hot Android smartphone.

Verizon is pretty happy with how the Motorola Droid is doing in the marketplace, but not everyone wants to have a cell phone of that size. Catering to the more pocket-friendly demographic is the newly announced Verizon Devour.

It’s hard to say why they didn’t choose to include the Devour as part of the official Droid line of Android smartphones, but Verizon is giving us another option from Motorola. The Devour looks and feels a lot like the Droid, except it’s smaller and likely cheaper too.

Running through the features, the expectation is a 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen (the Droid has a 3.7-incher), a touch sensitive navigation pad, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, preloaded with all sorts of Google apps, MOTOBLUR interface with its social network features, and an 8GB microSD card. And yes, it can download stuff through Android Market too.

They haven’t given any specific details, but the Verizon Devour by Motorola should hit the shelves of Verizon early next month at a price point likely in line with the Droid Eris. That’s about $100 with contract for those of you playing along at home.

Many other supposed iPhone killers have come and gone. We’ve seen some valiant efforts from devices like the BlackBerry Storm and the Palm Pre, but very few have quite the same potential as the Motorola Droid. In fact, the new smartphone is so great that Time Magazine decided to name it as the best gadget of the year.

Time Magazine just released its Top 10 Everything of 2009 and it just so happens that Motorola Droid tops the list for the gadget category. This could represent a major resurgence for Motorola too, which has suffered considerably in recent years.

Why was the Droid picked as the top gadget of the year?

Everybody likes Android, Google’s open-source smartphone operating system. But a smartphone operating system isn’t all that satisfying without an actual kick-ass smartphone wrapped around it.

Google Android isn’t new anymore, since we’ve already been presented with devices like the HTC Dream and myTouch 3G, but the Droid could have the best hardware wrapping around that platform. Kudos.

Oh, and if you’re wondering, the only other mobile phone to make the top gadget list was the iPhone 3GS and it took fourth place.

Three heads are better than two, right? Well, it seems that the Droid is heading across the pond in a slightly different form too. The Motorola MT710 is destined for the Chinese market and it sure bears a striking resemblance to the Droid that we have on this side of the Pacific.

While the Motorola MT710 looks a lot like the regular Droid, it is missing at least one very notable feature. The China version will not have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. You’ll have to rely solely on that 3.7-inch touchscreen display for all of your calling and texting needs.

Unlike so many other smartphones in China, the MT710 will actually have Wi-Fi too. Other highlights include China-friendly TD-SCDMA 3G connectivity, a localized version of OPhone OS 1.5, and a 624MHz Marvell PXA310 processor.

There’s no specific mention of a price or release date, but you can check out the full spec sheet on the official Motodev website.

Ever since the first Apple iPhone hit the scene, it seems that the mobile phone world has been looking for a so-called iPhone killer. We’ve seen some seriously stiff competition from companies like Samsung and HTC, but the Motorola Droid from Verizon Wireless looks like it could be the strongest offering to date.

Maybe you’re reaching the end of your contract and you’re in the market for a new handset. You want a hot new smartphone that can handle all of your daily tasks, but you want to look cool with the latest gadgetry too. You need to be satisfied by this endless parade of ever-fancier toys.

So, which is it? Are you better off joining the legions of Apple fans and opting for a new iPhone 3GS? Or would you prefer to buck the trend with some Android action, taking on the Droid from Verizon instead? Tough choice, right? Well, the XKCD webcomic just may have the answer for you.

Which is better? Well, that depends. Is there an app for that?
