According to Open Radar, a newly filed bug report has shown Mac users that the potential to crash the majority of apps on OS X can be found by simply typing a line of text. Just by typing File:/// with a capital letter, most apps will crash, and an error report for you app will appear on the screen.

Currently it’s unknown why this bug happens, but at first it was thought to be caused by an error within the OS’s built-in spellchecker, however this was later found to be unlikely as the crash still happened within text boxes that don’t support the spellchecker such as the Safari location search. All Macs currently running Mountain Lion seem to be affected by this bug, whilst all other versions of Mac OS seem to be unaffected.

It’s not a major issue as it’s rare that a Mac user may need to type in the text ‘File:///,’ however it may have opened up a window of concern towards some users as unsaved content may be affected by the crash. Likely though, the bug will be fixed soon enough.

At Mobile Magazine we are dedicated to reporting on some of the latest and greatest portable devices around. Still, sometimes it is nice to go retro as well. That’s what makes this new Macintosh Portable hack so interesting. On the outside, you have what appears to be an ordinary Mac Portable, but inside you have the guts of a Toshiba NB100 netbook running on a modified version of Mac OS X. This unique project is the hard work of Patrick Blampied, the hacker/modder behind the site ultimatehipstertech.com.

While turning netbooks into “hackintoshes” is nothing new, throwing the innards of that netbook into an old Mac portable case is pretty epic. This kind of hack requires a ton of soldering, not to mention the steps need to make OS X work with non-Mac computers. Unlike the original Mac Portable, this thing runs on battery power that makes a truly mobile experience— though I’m sure the case is still pretty heavy.

Check out the video and take a look:

What do you think, impressed by this hack? I know I am.

Axon Haptic tablet is more like a computer, than a tablet

When you buy the iPad, you get iOS. When the PalmPad comes to light, you’ll be getting webOS. What if you want to pick your own operating system? With the Axon Haptic, you can do exactly that.

The tablet, get this, ships without an OS pre-installed. It’s totally up to you what operating system you want to load onto the beast, assuming that it is compatible with the hardware found inside. According to the devs, the internals should be good for “almost any OS,” including Linux, Windows, and even OS X. Interesting enough, no mention of the little green guy anywhere.

It handles this via its EFI bootloader, which basically “tricks” Mac OS into thinking that it’s running on some Apple hardware. The actual specs, though, are closer to your standard issue Windows netbook. There’s an Intel Atom N270 processor, 320GB hard drive, 2GB RAM, WiFi, webcam, optional Bluetooth, and a ten-inch touchscreen with a stylus.

Strangely, the specs also call for a “3G CDMA Verizon SIM slot” option, though CDMA doesn’t use SIM cards the only thing left is this device would be for their LTE network. Either way, they’re accepting pre-orders now Axon Haptic for $750, the price is $750. Delivery date is anyone’s guess.
