Yesterday marked the opening day for Apple’s Mac app store, which saw more than 1 million apps downloaded within the first 24 hours.

The store, which resembles the app stores for the iPhone and iPad, is already home to more than 1000 apps. Some have been retro-fitted from their iOS versions to run smoothly on OS X and use the mouse rather than a touch screen. Others are full out Apple or third-party programs such as the iWork and iLife suites and Aperture, which have seen their CD-based production numbers slashed and, assumably will be phased out to make way for online-only purchase.

But the store’s premise does raise some questions. Will we eventually see high-end applications such as the Adobe Creative Suites in the Mac app store? And, a big question for those with poor credit and no credit cards: How have iTunes and the app stores effected the numbers of pre-paid credit cards already? With some of the apps in the Mac version of the store selling at $70 or higher, whatever that number is will probably rise when the store really catches on.

“We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting,” wrote Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a release. “Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is.”

They did it with music. They did it with mobile applications. They did it to a lesser extent with movies, TV shows, books; it was only a matter of time before digital sales had spread to full computer programs. But whether or not other companies jump on this one is yet to be seen.

Instead of downloading your desired file from a single source, you download little pieces of that file from many other sources. What if you could take the same idea and apply it in reverse for mobile apps?

That’s precisely what Mobile Hunt from Hackulous is designed to do. If it finds an app on your iPhone that is currently not available in its pirate app store, then it will ask to start a background upload of that app from your iPhone to their servers. The same thing will happen to other iPhone users who have the same app until Hackulous has compiled all its little pieces and put together the full app.

Yes, this is going to use up some of your mobile data, to be sure, but it’s for the good of the jailbroken iPhone pirate community. Moving forward, Hackulous plans on creating something similar to Mobile Hunt for the Mac App Store, but it won’t do that until there are enough “crap” apps i the Mac App Store to make a hack store worthwhile.

I think we all knew this day was coming, but now we’ve now got word coming straight out of Cupertino’s proverbial mouth. The App Store for Macs has been formally announced and it is scheduled to open its virtual doors on January 6.

As you can expect, the Mac App Store will function in much the same way as the iTunes App Store works for your iPhone and iPad. You shop around for some new applications, downloading and buying at will to expand the functionality on your MacBook or iMac.

The service, which will be made available to 90 countries at launch, will include paid and free apps in categories like Education, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Utilities, and — most importantly of all — Games. Apple takes a third of proceeds as its cut.

The Mac App Store will be integrated into the upcoming OS X Lion release, but Snow Leopard users can get in on the action through a free software update. This sounds, once again, like Apple is exerting a little more control over software distribution, which is why there’s a Cydia for Mac coming along for the ride too.
