In the first agreement of its kind, Skype has partnered with Canadian wireless carrier Telus to offer the ability to purchase Skype Credit via your mobile account. Telus customers will be able to bill Skype Credit charges to their wireless Telus accounts. Alongside the Skype announcement, Telus will soon launch the LG Optimus Black, Skype edition smartphone. Not alot of details were given about the nature of this particular “Skype edition” Android 2.2 smartphone, but from the looks of it they will just preload Skype on your home screen for you.

Skype is a great service for instant messaging and free Skype to Skype communications, but over the years their rates have increased significantly, according to Skype forum users. Calls on Pay As you Go plans start from 0.023 per minute, while an unlimited US & Canada plan costs just $3 per month. Skype was recently sold to Microsoft for $8.5B.

Aside from smart vacuums and glasses-free 3D HDTV sets, the two media darlings at LG’s CES booth last week had to be its pair of brand spanking new smartphones. The kicker is that the two phones have two very different things going for them.

I had the chance to go hands-on with both the LG Optimus 2X and the LG Optimus Black, albeit briefly, while visiting with the folks at LG and I have to say that I’m really impressed with the Optimus Black. As you can quite plainly see in these side-by-side shots, the display on the Optimus Black is decidedly brighter than the one on the Optimus 2X.

You can thank that NOVA screen technology for the 700 nit of brightness. Naturally, you won’t normally want to have it all cranked up when you’re just checking your Gmail in the subway, but this extra brightness can be utterly fantastic in bright sunlight… or under the glaring lights of a trade show floor. It really is the difference between night and day.

If I were to look at the LG Optimus 2X in isolation, I think I would have still liked its slim profile and vibrant display, but the LG Optimus Black outshines it (bad pun intended) when it comes to the display. Then again, I think I’d opt for the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra2 in the Optimus 2X over a crazy bright screen.
