Yesterday, Amazon started to roll out Version 7.2.2 software update for the 7″ Kindle Fire HD. The main 3 features of this update bring a camera app, Swype, and also the ability to sign up for FreeTime Unlimited.

The Camera app will give the ability to take pictures with the Kindle Fire HD’s front-facing camera. Additionally, Swype is a keyboard feature that allows you to replace typing with drawing across the letters. Swype is also available in multiple languages.

The last new feature is Kindle FreeTime Unlimited. FreeTime Unlimited is a paid subscription within Kindle FreeTime. The service allows parents to create custom content for their children. Parents can choose which apps, book, music, etc. are available to their children.

For Amazon Prime members, the service comes at $2.99 a month per profile, or $6.99 for a family. For non-Prime members, the service costs $4.99 per month per profile, or $9.99 for the entire family. FreeTime Unlimited works on the first generation Kindle Fire and the two new Kindle Fire HD models.

You can download the 7.2.2 update and get info about updating here.

Did you know that 8% of men and about 1% of women have red-green color blindness? Did you know that there are an estimated 10 million Americans living with color vision deficiency (CVD)?

If you think that you have a color blindness and you want to find out the type and extent, this test is for you. EnChroma was founded in Berkeley, CA with the purpose of enhancing color vision in humans, particularly the color blind. Their online Color Blindness test was developed to measure the type and extent of color vision deficiency.

The test only takes 2-5 minutes and consists of a series of images, questions, and answers. Each image has either a square, circle, or diamond inside of a gray square. If you can tell which shape is in the image, you select it from the answers. If not, then you can click the nothing button.

If you ask most people, they’ll tell you that the Amazon Kindle is pretty much the de facto e-book reader on the market today and that the Kindle Fire tablet has been pretty darn popular too. However, it looks like sales of the Kindle products at Walmart aren’t quite so hot and the mega-retailer has decided to stop stocking Amazon’s e-readers and tablets.

This comes straight from Walmart PR:

Recently, Walmart Stores, Inc. made a business decision to not carry current Amazon products beyond our purchase commitments and existing inventory.
Our customers trust us to provide a broad assortment of products at everyday low prices, and we approach every merchandising decision through this lens.
We will continue to offer our customers a broad assortment of tablets, eReaders and accessories at a variety of great price points. This decision is consistent with our overall merchandising strategy.

So, what are we supposed to glean from this? Well, we could think that it has to do with sales figures and the Kindle isn’t performing on Walmart’s shelves as well as they would have liked. It might also have to do with money in that Amazon might not be offering Walmart the kind of margins that it would like to have either. Then again, there could be a much more compelling reason.

Amazon directly competes with Walmart in just about everything. You want a physical book? Amazon and Walmart both sell that. You want a video game? They both sell that too. You want furniture, groceries, textiles, shoes, luggage, watches, light fixtures or bicycles? Both Amazon and Walmart sell all of that. In a sense, by stocking the Kindle family, Walmart becomes a bit of an Amazon showroom. This could be the same reason why Target decided to pull the Kindle from its shelves too.

Of course, I could be reading far too much into this, but I think it is amazing how Amazon has its hands in everything. You buy the tablet from them, so you can buy the digital content from them. Even if you buy an iPad or some other device instead, you can buy that product from Amazon too and there’s a good chance that you might get the Kindle app to buy more content. They get paid at every step of the way.

Love your Kindle? The Amazon Kindle is a great e-reader, but today the Kindle is getting even better. Amazon’s press event showed off several new members to the Kindle Fire family, but that’s not all. They even found a way to make e-readers exciting again.

How did they accomplish that?

Everyone expected that the Kindle PaperWhite would have a fronlit display, just like the Nook with GlowLight- but it’s the unexpected features that make it truly epic. The PaperWhite not only has a new menu that looks more modern than the traditional UI, but it also has a capacitive touchscreen (instead of the common e-reader IR touch) that makes it much more responsive.

Another big reason why the PaperWhite is actually a pretty cool new e-reader is a feature called “Time to Read”. Basically, this new feature figures out what kind of reader you are. It knows you reading habits and how long things take you. Using that information it can estimate when you’ll finish a chapter, or even when the whole book will be finished.

The new Kindle e-reader also has a much better XGA e-ink display, bringing its PPI from 169 up to 212.

The new Amazon Kindle PaperWhite will hit store shelves on October 1st for $119, or $179 for the 3G version.

Not into all those fancy extra features? A ‘basic’ Kindle for just $69 is also on its way, with a launch date of September 14th.

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep. 6, 2012– (NASDAQ:AMZN)—Kindle is the world’s #1 best-selling e-reader for five years running, and tens of millions of readers are already reading on Kindle. Today, Amazon is excited to introduce the fifth generation Kindle e-readers: Kindle Paperwhite is the most advanced e-reader ever constructed with 62% more pixels and 25% increased contrast, a patented built-in front light for reading in all lighting conditions, up to 8 weeks of battery life, and a thin and light design for just $119; Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G — never pay for or hunt for a Wi-Fi hotspot with the all-new top-of-the-line Kindle e-reader with free 3G wireless for just $179; and the new latest generation Kindle, the lightest and smallest Kindle, now with new, improved fonts, faster page turns and an even more unbelievable price: $69. Meet the all-new Kindle e-reader family at www.amazon.com/kindlepaperwhite.

“Paperwhite is the Kindle we’ve always wanted to build — the technology didn’t exist to build a display with this level of contrast, resolution, brightness and battery life, so our engineers invented it,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO. “62% more pixels, 25% higher contrast, built-in front light, perfect for bed, perfect for beach, even thinner, 8 weeks of battery life — this is a quantum leap forward and the best Kindle we’ve ever built by far.”

All-New Kindle Paperwhite — The World’s Most Advanced E-Reader

Most Advanced E-Reader Display, 62% More Pixels, 25% More Contrast

Kindle Paperwhite’s display is the most advanced e-reader display ever constructed. Featuring a 212 ppi display, Kindle Paperwhite has 62% more pixels, making text in books and periodicals crisp and clear at any size. Images are sharper, richer and show even more detail. Kindle Paperwhite’s screen has 25% higher contrast — the blacks are blacker, and the whites are whiter.

Innovative Built-In Light

Backlit LCD displays direct light up through the display into the user’s eyes. Kindle Paperwhite’s patented front-lit display guides light underneath an anti-glare layer and down toward the display, away from the reader’s eyes. This means a reader can read for hours without eye fatigue or strain. The screen brightness is easily adjusted for reading in any light. The Paperwhite display provides an unparalleled experience in the dark and in direct sunlight.

Breakthrough Battery Life

Kindle Paperwhite’s built-in front light is designed to be used at all times — both in daylight and in a dark room — for the clearest, crispest reading experience. In order to use the light at all times, Kindle Paperwhite requires exceptional power management to maintain the battery life that customers love about Kindle. Amazon’s light guide technology precisely diffuses the light across the screen and only requires four LEDs to light the entire screen (unlike LCD screens which can use up to 50 LEDs). The light guide is so efficient that Kindle Paperwhite has a remarkable 8 weeks of battery life, even with the light on at all times.

Free 3G

Kindle’s free 3G connection means customers never have to hunt for or pay for a Wi-Fi hotspot — they simply download and read books anytime, anywhere in over 100 countries around the world. Amazon pays for the 3G connection on Kindle Paperwhite Wi-Fi + 3G, so customers pay no monthly fees and sign no annual contracts.

Built-In Wi-Fi

Kindle Paperwhite comes with built-in Wi-Fi, letting readers discover new content at home or on the road. Kindle owners also enjoy free Wi-Fi access at AT&T hotspots across the US.

New Touch Technology

Kindle Paperwhite’s new capacitive touch technology is uniquely integrated into the Paperwhite display, allowing for a thinner form factor for Kindle Paperwhite and even better touch accuracy.

Slim and Sleek Design

At just over a third of an inch thin and weighing 7.5 ounces, Kindle Paperwhite is thinner than a magazine and weighs less than a typical paperback. The bezel height between the side of the device and the display itself is 77% thinner.

Hand-Tuned Fonts

Every font on Kindle Paperwhite is hand-tuned for maximum readability. The Amazon typography team worked at the pixel level to ensure consistency of stroke thickness and shape profiles across all individual glyphs, aligning each size to the specific grid of the new Paperwhite display. This allows for unprecedented sharpness of fonts. Kindle Paperwhite’s higher resolution display also allows for new elegant typeface options, such as Baskerville and Palatino, which use thin stems that would not render well on any lower resolution display.

Time to Read

Time to Read is a new feature for Kindle Paperwhite that helps readers know the amount of time it will take them to finish a chapter or a book. This feature is smart — it personalizes the time for each customer based on their reading speed and is constantly updated as the reader’s speed and habits change. With Time to Read, it’s never been easier to decide when to start a new chapter or finish the chapter you’re reading.

Explore the “Bones of a Book” with X-Ray

With a single tap, readers can see all passages across a book that mention ideas, fictional characters, historical figures, places or topics that interest them, as well as more detailed descriptions from Wikipedia and Shelfari, Amazon’s community-powered encyclopedia for book lovers. Amazon built X-Ray using its expertise in language processing and machine learning, access to significant storage and computing resources with Amazon S3 and EC2, and a deep library of book and character information.

Whispersync for Voice

All Kindles use Amazon’s popular Whispersync technology to automatically synchronize a customer’s Kindle library, including last page read, bookmarks, notes and highlights, across the widest range of devices and platforms. Now, Amazon is extending Whispersync to professionally narrated audiobooks — customers can start reading a book on their Kindle, and seamlessly switch to listening to their corresponding Whispersync for Voice-enabled audiobook from Audible on their phone or tablet, picking up exactly where they left off. With Whispersync for Voice, customers can continue enjoying books during commutes or any other time their eyes are busy. Whispersync for Voice is a solution for the millions of Amazon customers who want to spend more time with their favorite books. Customers can listen to their Audible audiobooks on Kindle Fire, iPhone, Android phones and Windows Phones.

Beautiful Leather Covers with Auto Wake and Sleep

Covers for Kindle Paperwhite feature a premium textured leather exterior and a subtle woven nylon interior to provide the lightest and thinnest form of protection. The integrated magnetic clasp ensures the cover remains securely closed while in a backpack, purse, or briefcase. The cover automatically wakes Kindle Paperwhite upon opening and puts it to sleep when closed, making it easy to dive right back into the book.

Latest Generation Kindle — Small, Light and Now Even Faster — only $69

Introducing the new, latest generation Kindle — the smallest, lightest and most affordable Kindle ever is now even better, with new improved fonts, 15% faster page turns and a new, unbelievably low price: just $69. In addition, the new Kindle now supports children’s books and comics, and includes new parental controls. Weighing just 5.98 ounces, Kindle is small and light enough to fit easily in a pocket and take everywhere, and still features the same 6-inch electronic ink display that reads like real paper. At just $69, the new Kindle is the perfect entry Kindle for young and adult readers alike.

Plus All the Features Customers Love About Kindle

All of the new Kindle e-readers come with instant access to the features that have made Kindle the #1 best-selling e-reader in the world for five years running:

Top-Rated, World-Class Customer Service

When a customer shops on Amazon.com, buys a Kindle, or buys Kindle content, they know that they are also getting Amazon’s world-class customer service. Amazon scored 86 — the top score — on the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), and 89 on the ForeSee customer satisfaction survey — the highest ever attained by a retailer. Amazon has been rated #1 in the National Retail Federation Customers’ Choice Awards, has been awarded the top spot in the MSN Money Customer Service Hall of Fame three years in a row, and is a JD Power and Associates 2012 Customer Service Champion. Customers have been shopping on Amazon for over 15 years, and they continue to do so because of the unparalleled end-to-end customer experience. So far in 2012, Kindle customer service has received a 97.1% satisfaction rate from customers.

Read for Free with Kindle Owners’ Lending Library

With Prime, Kindle owners can read for free — choose from over 180,000 books in the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, including all 7 Harry Potter books in 5 languages and over 100 current and former New York Times bestsellers, to borrow for free — as frequently as a book a month, with no waiting and no due dates.

Unparalleled Interoperability — “Buy Once, Read Everywhere”

Customers can read their Kindle books on the largest number of devices and platforms, including any Kindle as well as on iPhone, iPad, Android devices, Mac, PC, BlackBerry, Windows Phone or in their web browser with Kindle Cloud Reader.

Whispersync

Amazon’s Whispersync technology synchronizes a customer’s last page read, bookmarks and annotations across all of their devices, so they can always pick up where they left off.

Features Built Just for Readers

Each Kindle offers a variety of font styles and sizes, so customers can easily customize their reading experience. Kindle also comes with a built-in dictionary, instant lookup and translation of words, Real Page Numbers, support for bookmarks and annotations, and more.

Sharing

Customers can share highlighted sections, notes and meaningful quotes on Facebook and Twitter directly from Kindle without leaving the book. Customers can also view the passages frequently highlighted by other Kindle readers to discover interesting and meaningful passages in books using Popular Highlights.

Massive Selection, Lowest Prices

Every Kindle has instant access to millions of books at the best prices, including over 180,000 exclusive titles. Over 650,000 books are priced at $4.99 or less; over 1.2 million are $9.99 or less. Millions of free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books are also available to read on Kindle, and Kindle customers can borrow Kindle books from their public library and have them delivered to their Kindle via Wi-Fi.

No Setup Required, Simple and Easy-to-Use

With the Nexus 7 release and the iPad Mini supposedly coming sometime this year, Amazon’s competition is getting pretty fierce in the 7-inch market. The good news is that a Kindle Fire refresh is likely on the horizon, with Amazon recently sending out invitations to the media for a press conference on the 6th of September in Santa Monica, California.

This is pretty much a guaranteed announcement of Kindle products, including the Fire 2. If rumors prove correct, this will mean the introduction of a 10-inch Kindle Fire and hopefully a refreshed and updated 7-inch model as well.

With the Nexus 7 offering a more vanilla Android experience with full access to Google Play, it’s hard to envision what features Amazon could bring to the table that will help it get the one-up on Google. Yes, it has its Amazon Prime streaming and other special features, but is that really enough?

What do you hope to see from the next Kindle Fire? If they could up the amount of features in the tablet, would it be more appealing to you? Conversely, are you more interested in a different 7-inch option, like the Nexus 7 or the rumored iPad Mini?

Back in June, the U.S. State Department began consideration of a new deal with Amazon to purchase 35,000 Kindle Touches and content over a five year period- a value of $16.5 million. The contract was initiated by the state department because they felt that the iPad was too feature heavy for their needs.

Fast-forward to today and it seems that the deal is now on hold. The State Department feels it needs to re-access the situation and better research the market before they decide what kind of device to invest in. Maybe the new $199 Nexus 7 is part of this reconsideration- keep in mind that’s just speculation on my part.

I’m sure that the upper-management at Amazon is less than happy about this new development.

It seems Microsoft has now turned its sights on Barnes & Nobles’ successful Nook line, investing $300 million into the Nook and, as a result, Microsoft will now own a 17.6% in a new entity made up from the investment. For now, the name of this new company has yet to officially be unveiled, but it really shouldn’t come as any real surprise that Microsoft is making this move. This will allow Microsoft to have a better e-book strategy ready for its new Windows 8 tablets, which launch later this year. While Microsoft’s current Windows 8 Consumer Preview already has a Kindle app, it has now been announced that a Nook app will come with Windows 8, more than likely pre-installed.

When you combine this investment with the recent news that Microsoft is re-tooling its multimedia service, Zune, with a new Xbox-branded multi-platform music/video service, it starts to become clearer that Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to make sure they have as much content as possible when Windows 8 tablets hit the scene. Overall, this is just being smart on Microsoft’s part, after all, Apple has already established millions of apps and multimedia content, so Windows 8 will need all it can muster if it’s going to convince anyone to migrate from the iPad, or even an Android tablet, to their new ARM and x86 tablet devices.

As for why Barnes and Noble would find this partnership useful? Beyond the fact that they get a massive $300 investment? Separating its Nook line from its brick-and-mortar and non-digital book offerings might be a way the company can better appeal to more users and other markets internationally, at least according to Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps.

Will the move prove to be a successful one for Microsoft against competitors like Apple and Google? Or for that matter, will it give B&N an edge over Amazon’s Kindle line? Only time will tell for sure.

The world of e-paper and e-readers has had a lot of new changes heading towards it recently, this includes color technology and now even an e-Ink Kindle that has a built-in backlit display. According to Devin Coldewey at TechCrunch, who managed to catch a glimpse of the device, it’s light was a real game-changer for reading in the dark but it was a much softer glow than the harsh lighting that it found with typical backlit LCD screens.

While many are starting to turn to tablets for e-reader use, due to the vast amount of Android/iOS apps, it is still hard to deny the fact that e-readers are much easier on the eyes than an LCD-based tablet. If Amazon’s Kindle does in fact have a color model and a new less-harsh-than-LCD backlit model in the works, then e-readers have certainly found a few extras that will help keep them relevant against the growth of tablets being used as e-reader replacements.

Amid a sea of millions of iDevice docks, Grace Digital has launched the FireDock, one of the first speaker docks specifically designed for Amazon’s rather popular Kindle Fire tablet. In theory, it might be possible to hook up other devices, but based on its design and fit (and name), it was clearly meant for pairing with the Fire. Besides the audio element of the dock, it also includes a USB port for charging the Fire and will also allow for an optional 2200 mAh Lit-Ion battery pack for using the dock on the go.

It’s nice to see that the Kindle Fire is now starting to get some accessory love, and overall this looks like a pretty well designed docking station for everyone’s favorite little Amazon-powered Android tablet. The Firedock is expected on July 2nd of 2012 with a suggested retail price of $129.99.

San Diego, Calif. – (March 29, 2012) – Grace Digital Inc, a leading brand of wireless indoor & outdoor audio solutions, announces the FireDock speaker dock for Kindle Fire. In a space cluttered by generic universal docks, Grace Digital announces an innovative charging speaker dock with full-range high quality stereo sound developed exclusively to enhance the Kindle Fire’s audio and video experience. Shipping July 2012, the FireDock has a MSRP of $129.99.

Engineered for Kindle Fire, the Grace FireDock accommodates the unique USB port, headphone jack and power button, all located on the bottom of the tablet. Many universal 3.5mm speaker docks don’t allow charging while in use and make it difficult to access the device’s buttons. The Grace FireDock not only charges the Kindle Fire while on AC power, but the optional (sold separately) lithium-ion battery-pack allows for maximum portability. Exclusively sized for the Kindle Fire, the rotating cradle securely holds the 7–inch tablet, while accommodating horizontal and vertical viewing angles.

“Grace Digital’s design approach on the FireDock was to provide the optimal solution around clearly defined requirements of Kindle Fire users,” says Greg Fadul, CEO of Grace Digital Audio. “There are hundreds of iPhone speaker docks, but there is no quality audio solution for the 14 million Americans who have purchased the 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet. Grace Digital engineered the FireDock as a no compromise solution to enhance Kindle Fire’s multimedia offerings such as Netflix, Pandora Internet Radio, and Amazon audio books.”

Grace Digital’s full range base ported stereo speakers and Class D Digital Amplifier, provide a crystal clear stereo sound unrivaled by generic Android docks. The FireDock for Kindle Fire will be available July 2012 at GraceDigital.com, as well as numerous online and retail outlets for $129.99. Sign up directly on Grace Digital’s web site to be emailed as soon as the dock is available.

Apple’s new iPad shipped with that awesome 2048×1536 Retina display. As expected, a lot of apps have been updated to take advantage of the high resolution display. All together there are 42 apps for you to choose from, and the selection includes games, productivity/learning software, among other types.

Apple’s new iPad shipped with that awesome 2048×1536 Retina display. As expected, a lot of apps have been updated to take advantage of the high resolution display. The updated apps that are being highlighted on the front page of the App Store include mostly popular apps from the big names. These include Kindle, NY Times, Flipboard, Reeder, Twitter, and Vimeo. All together there are 42 apps for you to choose from, and the selection includes games, productivity/learning software, among other types.

Apple has decided not to highlight Apple’s own updated software such as GarageBand and iPhoto as these apps get good promotion already. And, as you might have guessed by now, the average app price is quite high.

As for all the other apps which didn’t get updated, we are expecting those to get updated in the very near future. Non-Retina display apps will also work just fine on the new device, but developers have no choice but to update their apps when the hardware is upgraded to stay ahead of their rivals.

But, as we reported earlier, we are hearing a lot of complaints regarding an overheating issue with the new iPad. The problem is thought to be the result of the larger battery and the more powerful processor. We are expecting the newly released high resolution apps to play a big role in heating the device up even more. Is anyone out there using an updated app and feeling the heat?
