Do you have a new iPad mini or a new iPad 4? It looks like the Dev-Team people are once again on your side, because they’ve released an update to redsn0w that allows you to save your iOS 6.0 blobs off to Cydia. Naturally, they recommend that you stick with 6.0 if that’s where you are at the moment.

They also note that several bug fixes come along with redsn0w 0.9.15b3, including an error that Windows users were encountering with the Restore button, as well as an iTunes error for stitched files. As per the Dev-Team blog:

Version 0.9.15b3 fixes the redsn0w “error 2601” that Windows users were seeing using the Restore button. It also fixes a related Windows iTunes error 14 for stitched files. Note that if you have a baseband, you should probably avoid stitching and simply use redsn0w’s native Restore (not iTunes).

Those lucky recipients of new iPad minis and iPad4s on Friday can use this redsn0w to save your 6.0 blobs off to Cydia. First connect your new device and turn it on, then use redsn0w’s Extras->SHSH Blobs->New and point it at the 6.0 IPSW.

I didn’t see any updates since, but they were also promising an ultrasn0w compatibility update for iOS 6.0 that is “mostly useful for 3GS old-bootrom users who are currently enjoying the untethered 6.0 jailbreak.” That will have the same baseband support as with iOS 5.x.

In any case, the downloads of redsn0w 0.9.15b3 are available now for OS X and for Windows.

Maybe you’re not a fan of the Siri or you think your digital voice assistant could use some digital assistance. If you’ve got a jailbroken iPhone, you can now pick up the NowNow app to address that very need.

I should be clear, though, that this isn’t really Google Now in the way that you get with Android Jelly Bean. You don’t get those “cards” for the weather and directions for the drive home. Instead, what NowNow does is bring Google Voice Search to the forefront. All you have to do is hold the home button and up will pop the Google Voice Search. That part of the interface really does look like the Android equivalent.

It should be noted that Google Voice Search doesn’t communicate with other iOS apps, so you won’t be able to set appointments or that kind of thing, but you might find the Google searches to be more accurate than what Siri is giving you. You can find NowNow in the BigBoss repository in Cydia and it’s a free download.

Chpwn has come up with a nice little tweak for all the jailbroken iOS owners out there and it’s called Zephyr.

Available through the Cydia Store for $2.99, Zephyr comes with two multitasking gestures. The first lets you swipe from the bottom of the screen to reveal an app switcher. The second lets you swipe from the left or right of the screen to quickly switch between recently used applications. Do these sound familiar? They should.

If you remember webOS, it had effectively the same gestures. Long swipes across the gesture area would switch apps and a big swipe from the gesture area to the touchscreen would show your app dock. The horizontal app-switching swipes also work on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. I’m not taking anything away from Chpwn (Grant Paul), per se. He had to get his inspiration from somewhere. You’ll need to be jailbroken first.

Instead of downloading your desired file from a single source, you download little pieces of that file from many other sources. What if you could take the same idea and apply it in reverse for mobile apps?

That’s precisely what Mobile Hunt from Hackulous is designed to do. If it finds an app on your iPhone that is currently not available in its pirate app store, then it will ask to start a background upload of that app from your iPhone to their servers. The same thing will happen to other iPhone users who have the same app until Hackulous has compiled all its little pieces and put together the full app.

Yes, this is going to use up some of your mobile data, to be sure, but it’s for the good of the jailbroken iPhone pirate community. Moving forward, Hackulous plans on creating something similar to Mobile Hunt for the Mac App Store, but it won’t do that until there are enough “crap” apps i the Mac App Store to make a hack store worthwhile.

It’s pretty clear that Steve Jobs and the rest of the team in Cupertino aren’t exactly fans of people who go around jailbreaking iOS devices. They’d much rather you stay inside the confines of the controlled Apple ecosystem. Strangely enough, though, Apple has decided to pull the jailbreak detection API for its afforded options.

What exactly does this mean? As you may be able to guess, the API allows app developers to detect whether a user’s iOS 4.0 device has been jailbroken. For app developers and enterprise IT folks, this gave them a way to find users who were more susceptible to attacks (jailbroken devices are generally more vulnerable) and proceed to provide the suitable protection if they could. Apple doesn’t want you to do that anymore. Maybe it’s because they’d prefer if the only real protection was not jailbreaking in the first place.

Interestingly enough, it is the hacker community that is also working to safeguard their jailbroken brethren. Stefan Esser of Saktion Eins will be demonstrating a tool called antidote on Tuesday. This is said to add ASLR (address space layout randomization) onto jailbroken iOS devices, scattering key memory locations around the phone. This makes it more difficult for hackers (and their attacks) to find those critical tidbits of data.

At the end of the day, the same old lesson holds true. Yes, jailbreaking your iOS device will offer you more apps and more flexibility, but at the same time, it comes with its share of risks too. It’s up to you how you want to proceed, but antidote looks like it could help a little.

iPhone Explorer for Mac OSX

Ok that was fast. Not even 10 hours ago we reported on how the iPhone practically sucked because it couldn’t run apps off a memory chip. Well, it still cant, but it can act as a portable memory drive so that’s gotta count for something.

A new desktop utility called iPhone Explorer (IE), basically turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a flash drive, and no, you don’t have to be jail broken but it does provide a few benefits if you are. Not intended for the novice iPhone user, as this utility could inevitably botch your OS, that means a reset, so I’m sure you know how that works by now. If it’s jailbroken, you get sweet access to the real root of your iPhone, where you can recover your address book, SMS, e-mails and more.

The software lets you drag and drop files as if you had another “windows explorer” window open with your iPhone sitting there, or a Finder in the case of those with a real computer. You can rename, delete, and create files. Essentially giving you the access you should have had in the first place, but don’t, because everyone in Cupertino squeels like a baby hamster when they fart. Turning your iPhone into a remote storage device means you wont have to worry about losing those tiny little memory flash drives that fall in between car seats, puddles, and get mangled in the wash cycle.

Head on over to iPhone Explorer‘s website, grab the free tool for Windows or Mac, and you will be dragging and dropping until your hearts content.
