Just when we thought that watches had largely become irrelevant in the modern age of smartphones, the rise of the smart watch has now begun. While smartwatches are still far from commonplace, we are continuing to see more and more interest in such devices. One of the most popular of these being the Pebble, which first surfaced as a Kickstarter project.

While the Pebble works great with iOS for pulling up SMS, email previews and calendar appointments, it can certainly do a whole lot more than that if you are willing to jailbreak your iDevice.

Developer Conrad Kramer recently tweeted that his “BTNNotificationEnabler” tool is on Cydia, which allows everything from your Notification Center to be sent over to the Pebble, or really any Bluetooth device.

This is yet another of the many, many reasons why you should consider jailbreaking your phone. While the process of jailbreaking was once a complicated affair, modern tools like evasi0n have certainly made jailbreaking nearly effortless.

Anyone out there interested in the Pebble or other smartwatches for that matter? Do you think that smartwatches are the future or nearly a fad item that will eventually be phased out in the next few years? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Every time a new version of iOS is released, the race is on to exploit it. Despite constant warning from Apple and even the government, jailbreaking has become even more popular. In fact, the evad3rs iOS 6 Evasi0n jailbreak is already being called the most popular jailbreak in history.

This claim is most likely due to the insane amount of downloads that evasi0n received in such a short amount of time. More specifically, Jay Freeman of Cydia claims that 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads and 400,000 iPod Touches accessed Cydia within 4 days of evasi0n’s release.

All of these numbers combined equals 6.9 million iDevices. Plus, this number only includes people who visited Cydia after jailbreaking. Over 7 million jailbreakers in just a few days is surely enough to make Steve Jobs roll over in his grave.

With jailbreaking becoming more and more prevalent, could Apple’s lack of design changes be to blame? Aside from Notification Center and multitasking, iOS has remained the same in terms of design since 2007. Although some may argue that if it isn’t broken don’t fix it, it may be time for Apple to change it up a bit.

Did you use evasi0n to unlock your iOS device? Do you think that it is time for Apple to change up the iOS design? Let us know in the comments below.

Within the first 48 hours of being released, it is being reported that evasi0n, the newest jail-breaking tool, was used over 1.7 million times. Despite the huge success and praise, it seems as if the “evad3rs” hit a small bump in the road.

“Shortly after evasi0n was released this morning, we started getting reports from readers that the Weather app no longer worked on their iPhones. So I checked mine out, and sure enough, it wouldn’t even open,” said Cody Lee of iDownloadBlog.

Hackers and programmers never leave the basement and go outside anyway right? So why would they have to check the weather? This is the exact notion that MuscleNerd, one of the evad3rs, tweeted about:

“For those seeing the Weather app problem, @planetbeing has started working on a fix. Until then, just don’t go outside”

Apparently, according to numerous tweets, the stock Weather app was not even shown on iDevices until the users got the jailbreak. However, a fix and an update are already on the way to Cydia for current evasi0n users. If you can’t wait another second to get your weather back, and can’t manage to download any other weather app from the App Store, check out Funky Space Monkey‘s fix via Gizmodo:

1. BACKUP YOUR DEVICE
2. Launch Cydia and install Mobile Terminal and Open SSH
3. Launch Mobile Terminal and type the following followed by a return: su root
4. Now type in the default password, if you haven’t changed it: alpine
5. Copy and paste the following script into Mobile Terminal:

#!/bin/bash
chmod -x /usr/libexec/mobile_installation_proxy
killall -9 mobile_installation_proxy
rm /var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist /var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-045.csstore
launchctl stop com.apple.mobile.installd
launchctl start com.apple.mobile.installd

while [ ! -f /var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist ];
do
sleep 1
done
while [ ! -f /var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-045.csstore ];
do
sleep 1
done

sleep 10

chmod +x /usr/libexec/mobile_installation_proxy
sync
reboot

6. Your device should reboot at this point and all will supposedly be well.

Have you already jailbroken your iDevice? Is the stock Weather app having issues or did the fix from Funky Space Monkey work? Let us know in the comments below.

Apple iPad and iPhone users rejoice, an iOS 6.x jailbreak solution for all iDevices has finally arrived. Now that you can get your jailbreak on, what are some of the jailbroken apps you are most looking forward too?

We’ve put together a list of some of the apps and tweaks that are considered the “best”, and could likely end up as must-haves. Keep in mind that while most of these should already work with iOS 6, they might not be quite yet optimized for the iPhone 5 and there may be some other issues to work out.

That said, most of the developers are working hard to ensure their apps are compatible with iOS 6 and 6.1 as soon as possible.

NowNow

What’s Now Now? Basically this is a jailbreak tweak that allows you to press and hold the home botton and launch Google Voice search as an alternative to Siri. Keep in mind that this isn’t the full “Google Now” experience as you would get with an Android Jelly Bean device– but it is as close as you’ll find with iOS.

Also worth mentioning, Google Voice Search doesn’t communicate with other iOS apps, so no setting appointments or anything of that nature. Instead, this is a way to get more accurate voice search than perhaps you feel you’d get with Siri.

Browser Chooser

Although Safari is a solid browser choice, for whatever reason, you might decide to go a different route. Maybe Google Chrome, maybe Firefox OS or even something else.

Regardless of what alternative you use, you’ll notice that clicking on links will still often end up bringing you to Safari. With Browser Chooser you can actually set a different browser as the default.

A simple tweak, but a useful one nonetheless.

Auxo

This unique app switcher favors small cards instead of app icons, additionally it adds alot of extra functionality including the ability to easily kill multiple apps, a great new music player integrated and easy access to settings like Wi-Fi, Airplane and much more.

IntelliScreen X

IntelliScreen X has been around for a while now, but it is still one of the most useful programs out there, providing a great Notification Center ‘tweak’ that allows you to read status updates, post new tweets, quickly respond to SMS, Email and much more.

5 Icon Dock

This one isn’t that “impressive” of a tweak, but it is nonetheless useful. Basically it adds the ability to add a 5th icon to the dock. Simple, but ultimately rather useful.

AssistantLove

*According to one of our readers, this one is confirmed to NOT be compatible with iOS 6.1 just yet, hopefully soon.*

AssistantLove has several unique features that extend the functionality of Siri. The two biggest features have to do with GPS and music.

For music, AssistantLove takes Siri beyond controlling music directly on your device, giving you the ability to force the playback of any Spotify track as well. Of course you’ll need to have a Spotify Premium account.

As for GPS? With AssistantLove there is integration for Waze, MotionX-GPS, Navigon and TomTom. This means Siri can ask for directions and the program of your choice can launch with the current device location and specifcied destination information already in place.

Ifile

This is exactly what it sounds like, a file explorer. Ifile makes it easy to create, modify or explore anything and everythign with iOS’ file structure. This also makes it easy to install packages without having to know terminal commands.

Summing it up…

Is that it? Of course not, there are unlimited possibilities out there when it comes to apps and tweaks for your jailbreak iDevice.

This is a good starter list, and one that I hope to expand with the help of our readers. Is there a specific tweak or app that you’d recommend to those new to the jailbreaking scene? If so, mention it in the comments below. App suggestions with a high amount of upvotes will be added in as an edit to this guide.

The time has almost arrived. Late last night the team behind the evasi0n jailbreak officially confirmed that their jailbreak solution would in fact be ready sometime today. Taking a quick look at their website you’ll notice a “status bar” with a percent by it. As of the time of the writing of this article, it reads 97% complete. When it reaches 100%, the jailbreak will have arrived.

For those wondering, this jailbreak tool will work with the iPod Touch, iPad, iPad Mini and all iPhones capable of running iOS 6 through iOS 6.1. Additionally this is the very first tool that provides support for the 4th-gen iPad and iPhone 5. Even better, this is a totally untethered solution.

Hopefully not much longer before we can update you with the final release information and instructions. Are you ready to finally break your iOS 6 device free from its chains? What unlocked features/apps are you most looking forward to using once jailbroken?

UPDATE: The jailbreak has now arrived. Click here for download information and installation instructions.

Yesterday Apple released iOS 6.1 update to the masses. iOS 6.1 is a pretty minor upgrade but does include support for LTE carriers around the world. New LTEs in Denmark, Italy and many areas of the Middle East will now be supported, with Apple’s addition of 23 new iPad LTE and 36 new iPhone operators.
But the most exciting part of the release is 6.1s open door for hackers.

A group of iOS developers, evad3rs, are preparing a major hack for all recent iOS devices including the iPhone 5, iPad mini, iPad 4, and the iPod Touch 5G.We have been waiting patiently for the hack and it appears it may finally be upon us thanks to a vulnerability that exists in iOS 6.1. The Apple developer Musclenerd hinted that this Sunday would be “fun day” for jailbreakers.

For those with newer iOS 6 devices that have been impatiently waiting for a tetherless jailbreak, this is awesome news. For now though, don’t get too excited until we have firmer details regarding the jailbreak. Be sure to check back with us this weekend, when we will hopefully have news and instructions on how to jailbreak your iOS 6.1 device.

Frustrated with getting stuck with boxed iPhone apps on your iPad? Cydia has had a tweak available for jailbroken iPads, called FullForce that could be the perfect solution. FullForce forces iPhone apps to full screen without distortion and without the 2x zoom that iOS already provides.

Cydia keeps a list of apps that are compatible with its tweak and just added to that list is Google’s newly released iOS version of Maps.

The new app runs flawlessly using FullForce except for a few minor things like the sidebar. Hopefully Google just releases an app made for the iPad, but until then this does nicely to bridge the obvious gaps in the current map app.

Do you prefer Google Maps to Apple Apps? Would you like to see a way to make it the default map app for iPads?

Do you have a new iPad mini or a new iPad 4? It looks like the Dev-Team people are once again on your side, because they’ve released an update to redsn0w that allows you to save your iOS 6.0 blobs off to Cydia. Naturally, they recommend that you stick with 6.0 if that’s where you are at the moment.

They also note that several bug fixes come along with redsn0w 0.9.15b3, including an error that Windows users were encountering with the Restore button, as well as an iTunes error for stitched files. As per the Dev-Team blog:

Version 0.9.15b3 fixes the redsn0w “error 2601” that Windows users were seeing using the Restore button. It also fixes a related Windows iTunes error 14 for stitched files. Note that if you have a baseband, you should probably avoid stitching and simply use redsn0w’s native Restore (not iTunes).

Those lucky recipients of new iPad minis and iPad4s on Friday can use this redsn0w to save your 6.0 blobs off to Cydia. First connect your new device and turn it on, then use redsn0w’s Extras->SHSH Blobs->New and point it at the 6.0 IPSW.

I didn’t see any updates since, but they were also promising an ultrasn0w compatibility update for iOS 6.0 that is “mostly useful for 3GS old-bootrom users who are currently enjoying the untethered 6.0 jailbreak.” That will have the same baseband support as with iOS 5.x.

In any case, the downloads of redsn0w 0.9.15b3 are available now for OS X and for Windows.

Maybe you’re not a fan of the Siri or you think your digital voice assistant could use some digital assistance. If you’ve got a jailbroken iPhone, you can now pick up the NowNow app to address that very need.

I should be clear, though, that this isn’t really Google Now in the way that you get with Android Jelly Bean. You don’t get those “cards” for the weather and directions for the drive home. Instead, what NowNow does is bring Google Voice Search to the forefront. All you have to do is hold the home button and up will pop the Google Voice Search. That part of the interface really does look like the Android equivalent.

It should be noted that Google Voice Search doesn’t communicate with other iOS apps, so you won’t be able to set appointments or that kind of thing, but you might find the Google searches to be more accurate than what Siri is giving you. You can find NowNow in the BigBoss repository in Cydia and it’s a free download.

I’ve always figured that I could tinker with my mobile devices however I see fit, as long as I’m not infringing on some other laws about invasion of privacy or anything like that. It seems that the United States government agrees with me, because it has now been ruled that jailbreaking an iPhone is perfectly legal… however, the same isn’t true when it comes to other devices, like the iPad.

According to the US Copyright Office, the act of jailbreaking a mobile phone does not violate any copyright laws. If you happen to use a jailbroken iPhone to side-load some illegally-acquired applications, that’s still illegal, but the actual jailbreaking itself is fine. However, the US Copyright Office does say that this ruling does not apply to tablets, including the iPad. They say that the “category of tablets is difficult to define,” so they haven’t made any sort of over-arching statement about that product category yet.

The issue at hand was described as thus:

“Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute lawfully obtained software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications with computer programs on the telephone handset.”

The idea is that smartphones could get tied down the manufacturer or carrier to block the installation of certain “software applications,” so the act of jailbreaking to allow this installation becomes fair game under the DMCA. Realistically, given that tablets can be subsidized by carriers and such, I don’t see how they’re legally all that different from their smartphone counterparts. Your thoughts?
